Daniel is very professional. The TV Wall mount was perfectly mounted and he walked us through whole process. He also shared few tips for new home owners :). We couldn't be more happier to use his services. We would highly recommend his services for anyone looking for handyman type of jobs.

Solid resource for those annoying handyman tasks. He arrived perfectly on-time and had all the right equipment. The job turned out to be more complicated due to something I overlooked and he wasn't the least bit fazed by it. The final job was exactly what I was hoping for.

Danny is terrific! He did what we had asked, and will be doing a few other jobs as well. He knows what he is doing and can do ANYTHING to do with building and/or "handyman" tasks. I can't say enough about how knowledgeable he is. Fast, pleasant and willing to do (and CAN do) everything!

Within 2 hours of initially bidding on my job, Sam was at my home (at 11pm on a Saturday!) assembling my bookcase/toy box! He did a great job, charged a very fair and reasonable rate, and even moved the bookcase to its designated spot, when I realized it would be too heavy for me to move myself. I will definitely reach out to Sam for any future handyman needs, and recommend him highly.

We used Padilla Home Improvement for some handyman services around the house to get ready to sell our home. Emilio was prompt and professional both when coming to provide a quote and when beginning work. He came to provide a quote within 1-2 days of me contacting him here on thumbtack and began work a few days later. He completed everything I requested of him and then some. Some things he did for us I include: installing a railing to the basement and second floor, fixing and replacing a light fixture, waterproofing a cellar wall, painting and improvements on our deck, and installing smoke detectors. He worked quickly and provided high quality service. I will be recommending him to anyone who mentions to me they are looking for handyman services and also we will absolutely contact him again if we need more services during this transition!

The pulley system on my garage door snapped one day, and Bill was able to come out and fix it the same day I put in my request on Thumbtack. He was professional and personable, did a great job, clearly knows what he's doing, and I will absolutely hire him to help around here again. His hourly rate is the same as another handyman we've used, which leads me to believe it's pretty standard around here.

Troy did a great job! We are very pleased with the back splash he installed. He was very prompt and he stayed with the price that he quoted. Troy also helped me with suggestions considering this was the first back splash I had done. He is very professional and I will certainly use him again as a handy man. Thank you Troy!

Randy thanks for fixing my Truth crank vinyl replacement window. Services planned during free estimate were no different than those rendered. Once the scheduled parts were ordered, we got exactly what we needed without being overcharged. Friendly customer service from a very professional team. When hubby doesn't have time to do the needed house repairs, we will call upon Randy--our new handyman. Thanks for our first well done job. We look forward to working with you and De again.

I hired Ian for a repair and some needed maintenance at my home and he did a great job completing the work efficiently and professionally. His communication is excellent. I spoke with other handymen during the hiring process and Ian responded promptly and had a very fair price compared with the others. I’m very pleased with the quality of work and will definitely contact him when I need handyman work done around my house.

Bill installed our kitchen backsplash and he did an excellent job. The tiles were a complicated pattern with a lot of cutting required, and the backsplash looks great. Bill is very professional and his quote was very reasonable. I would highly recommend Bill for any kind of handyman work because he is honest, professional, and talented-combination that’s very hard to come by.

So far Phil has replaced my hot water heater and put in a new light by my front door. I plan to have Phil hide cabling for a TV, mount security cameras, fix an issue with my skylight, build a storage cube, replace some two prong receptacles with three prong and patch my front steps. Phil has given me suggestions that have reduced the amount of outlay for materials. His advice and expertise has helped keep the cost of various small projects reasonable. I plan to use Phil for my handyman needs going forward.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.
