Patricia and John were in touch several times to confirm job, arrived on time with quality cleaning products and did a fantastic job. Their attention to detail in every room was beyond expectations ...even finding a broken ceiling fan bulb that needed replacing! They were so friendly to both human and canine family and were a joy to work with. I look forward to working with them again.

Ben and his crew installed a new roof on my home. Excellent results and no suprises with add on costs. Ben was completely transparent with estimate and charges that may be incurred; such as my skylights and needed plywood replacement. He is now officially my go to contractor.

TAF Construction finished our patio roof and ceiling on time and budget. The weather turned quite cold for awhile but it did not deter the work from continuing. Excellent cleanup as well. We have an additional project and will use them again.

Robert and his helper were awesome! Robert kept in contact before the job making sure the weather would be just right for the paint to dry! Robert and his helper showed up right on time ready to start the day! They worked the entire day (Saturday) they had to fill about a million screw/nail holes, fix chipped, cracked, falling off drywall tape and paint every inch of the walls and ceiling! Needless to say they did a flawless job! The garage hadn’t been painted for 27 years and now it’s a show stopper! We look forward to having Robert come out again in the spring/summer and epoxy our garage floor and stain the concrete on our front exterior entryway :) I would highly recommend Robert and his team!

He did an excellent job, He's friendly, professional, reasonable with his prices. He took 2 days to do the job and do it right. We needed some trim work done to cover a settlement crack along a tray ceiling that I had not been able to repair. I posted the request on Thumbtack and got a few replies with hourly rates. I contacted a couple of the contractors because I wanted to get more than an hourly cost to do the work. I described the scope of the work to each contractor and said that I wanted to get a more concrete estimate. Joe Valentino of Valentino Construction and Design estimated the job would take about 3 hours to do. I agreed on the hourly rate, and I told him I would get the material and prime and paint the wood to be ready for him. We agreed on a date. Due to circumstances beyond our control that both Joe and I had, the work got delayed by about a month. Finally, a date was set. Joe said he would get the wood and prime it. I agreed. Joe and his helper showed up at the appointed time and got to work. They were meticulous in their work. Furniture was covered or moved and tarps were laid over the carpeting. Four hours later the work was done. Beautifully, I may add. The trim work was done and Joe had even given it a couple of coats of paint to finish it. Both my wife and I loved it. They cleaned up and vacuumed the carpets. Furniture was put back in place. I asked Joe what the cost would be. He told me that we had agreed to the three hours of labor and the cost of materials so that would be it. Fantastic I thought; a man of his word. I would highly recommend Valentino Construction and Design to anyone needing carpentry work. They are friendly, do great work and are reasonable with their pricing. I give them 5 stars!

We had light fixtures and a ceiling fan installed, they look fantastic. He also let us know before installing the ceiling fan that it was not working properly and was able to let us go and get a replacement and still install the same day. Would definitely recommend.

Bryan did an awesome job at my house. He is a true professional. I had a roof leak and it made a big hole fall through ceiling in my hallway. He repaired the roof and the inside ceiling. You can't even tell it had ever happened. I would definitely recommend him for any kind of work. He does it all.

We highly recommend Eric Plomchok and Second Nature Home Improvements. We engaged Eric to take down a wall between our kitchen and dining room, remove cabinetry and a desk and to install 11 sets of cabinets, cabinetry and ceiling lighting, shelving and wallpaper. The result is amazing. The finished ceiling blends so well that it is impossible to see where a wall might have been. Eric’s care and attention to detail in all of the work he completed is extraordinary. No seams are visible in the wallpaper, the numerous relocated electrical switches and outlets are in perfect places and no nail marks are visible in the cabinetry. The last bit of work left of the original job is matching the wooden floor boards where the wall once stood and we trust that, given his track record so far, this will be completed soon and will look terrific. Eric is professional, friendly and always cleaned up at the end of the day. He was also very patient when changes were made to original plans. We came to think of him as family and to trust him in the house when no one was home. We were so impressed with his work and so reluctant to see him go that we kept finding other things since he was so proficient in so many areas! In addition to the original work he was engaged to do, we also engaged him to help install new electronic temperature controls and a keypad system for our garage doors. Unfortunately, now that Eric has completed the extension of the kitchen in such exemplary fashion, the rest of the kitchen looks old and tired and needs updating! As a result, we have asked Eric to provide estimates for the kitchen update as well as a remodel for our master bathroom. Again, we highly recommend Eric and Second Nature Home Improvements! Greg was very responsive - he put my grill together and fixed a ceiling fan. The fan needed an additional Part and Greg bent over backwards to get the part and even had to do some soldering - he was very polite and even took all the grill’s packaging materials - i will definitely hire him again.

Jeff has come out to put in a new sink, faucet, garbage disposal and water lines under sink. He also cut into my ceiling a new junction box for a new light fixture in my dining room. He not only performed the work, but also kept the job-site clean and spackled and painted the wall from the electrical work he did. I would not have anyone else in my home to do improvements and we are already working towards a new deck in the rear of my new home. Great guy, great service...THE BEST!!

We realized that Americoat Painting & Construction Services would be a different home repair company when the two workers from the company first entered our house – they took off their shoes, put on booties and placed tarpaulin from the front door up the steps to the work site on the second floor. This was the beginning of what would be a professional installation of a new shower stall and repair/painting of bathroom walls and ceiling. When they removed the old stall they found inferior flooring and a bird nest resulting from a previously unknown opening to the outside of the house. They also noted that the shower light was a shock possibility. They took these issues in stride and altered the project to account for these problems. They were friendly and neat and offered advice on the removal of wall tile prior to painting the walls and ceiling. They even recommended a paint color that matched bathroom fixtures and cabinets. As for price, Americoat installed the new shower and painted the bathroom for about half the price another construction company bid for the shower alone. When the job was over, we were so happy with their work that we had them seal and straighten a cellar wall that was bowed due to outside water leakage. And, as a final example of excellence, at the end of each day of the job they left our house as clean as it was when they entered.

Mr. Venable is currently working on power and lighting design, service upgrade and rewire of my entire home due to a fire. I've entrusted this whole house project to him because of the outstanding quality of his work. He has been my electrician since October 2004; projects both large and small, include, but are not limited to: - ran power to my backyard carriage house - wired the pergola and backyard for lighting, power and cable outlets. - installed wet weather ceiling fans and lights in the pergola - added circuits, lights and outlets as needed in the main house. I'm a very exacting, hands/eyes on client, in the process of a whole house restoration; some of the tradesmen find me "difficult" because I'm hands on -- I know what I want. Additionally, I expect to be honestly communicated with -- kept informed of project status, delays, problems encountered, etc. The one tradesman that shines is Mr. Venable; in addition to his workmanship, professionalism, responsiveness, etc; the characteristics that I most value are his HONESTY and INTEGRITY. It is truly my pleasure to recommend him and his company.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
