Jason has been fantastic to work with. He came out to give us a bid and on the spot fixed a small issue we were having. This and the price regarding further renovations cemented our decision to use his services. So far he has uninstalled our previous contractor's sloppy work, helped us reimagine our kitchen, and has been following through in a timely and professional manner. He provides us with options at every step of the way, but based on his work, we trust him to do whatever he thinks is right because "the proof is in the pudding." We could not be happier that we found Jason to help us perfect our first home.

Repairs to parts of the living room wall were necessary due to drywall tape coming off. Also in one bathroom there was a gap between the tub and tile floor. Tom fixed all the problem areas to my satisfaction. Between the work and the initial consult he made 3 visits and was there at the time he said he would be each time. He explained what he was going to do thoroughly and finished in a timely manner. I would definitely use Tom's services again and would recommend him to others.

Refreshing to meet a contractor who understands and uses technology. I used Dwayne to consult on the proper configuration for my sink & disposal. It gave me problems for years. He evaluated it and proposed new piping. It seems much better although I'm only on day one. Price was reasonable. Labor and parts was below $150. Wish I had done with the first problem! Expert advice is hard to get. Dwayne was the first to see that the pipe direction was wrong. Thank you.

Met Jesse purchasing paint at Sherwin Williams. He was flexible with my schedule and fit me into his schedule soon after meeting. He initially painted a high stairwell and hall but was able to return in a couple of days to do additional work including ceiling drywall repair and trim painting. He was very professional but easy going and we easily negotiated a fair price. I would certainly consider him for future work.

Joe did an excellent job for me in repairing an attic ladder. It was a challenging job that several contractors had turned down or were very expensive. Joe did research on the parts and best way to repair - I really appreciated that. Great customer service, professional. I would definitely use It's a Breeze Contracting again and refer my friends. Dylan and the rest of the team at Williams Plastering are wonderful contractors to work with. He communicated in a timely fashion, had a very detailed proposal, took great care in keeping my house clean during the Plastering and dry wall repair. We had several rooms and ceilings that were damaged from the old roof leaking and after his repairs the rooms look flawless. It looks like a new house! I plan to share his contact info with as many friends as possible.

Prospective Clients: I met Bill through Thumbtack and he was the most willing and reasonably priced contractor I have ever worked with. Bill and his son Zach were: (1) On time, early actually (2) Efficient -- we chatted about a range of subjects while they did their work (3) Did not try to overcharge me for the work that they did -- $50 (Bill's typical fee is $50/hr) to replace a shower door with a rod and curtain. They did it all in roughly an hour including: (a) Analyzing the problem (b) Helping me find the right replacement at the Busy Beaver nearby (c) Removing the old door (d) Putting in the new rod and curtain Not bad for an hour. And all for just $50 (plus parts -- add $50). TL;DR: Hire this man. *****

Bobby undertook a gigantic project for us that including fully finishing our basement from the ground up and a kitchen gut and remodel. Bobby was always on top of things and was patient and attentive when I wanted to talk about the project status. He fixed numerous mistakes that other contractors made without asking for anything. He ended up making a custom shower pan for us due to the mistake of one of the contractors and it turned out absolutely beautiful. His employees and subcontractors were also very kind and respectful especially the drywall finisher. The project ended up running a little bit longer than either of us would have liked but other than that the craftsmanship and quality of work was very good.

I'm an industrial design engineer and I've been renovating property in Pittsburgh for 10+ years and I decided to hire James for two weeks to help get an 1800's house that I bought rent-able until I could revisit the house more intensly in the future. Long story short, I quickly determined that I could count on Jim and his men to show up and get down to business on a higher level. We ended up gutting the entire house, jacking up the foundation, restructuring anything that was questionable, adding and redesigning bathrooms, running all new pex water lines, new electric and new gas lines. We installed all new windows, insulation, plumbed for an additional kitchen for possible future needs. We installed new headers and opened up rooms to meet code standards, leveled floors and ceilings by adding wooden drop cieling grids and installed drywall throughout. We are currently finishing drywall and getting ready to start all the final flooring and trim work and I'm completely satisfied thus far and would not hesitate to keep them working on my property portfolio. Here are a few qualities that he and his crew display that are hard to find: --They show up on time and enjoy working regardless of the conditions. We had quite a few miserable demo days with nothing but positivity. --They don't go straight to the bar after work, they go home and spend time with their family. --They are honest. Alot of contractors will tell you they know all about everything just to find out they are faking it. If Jim didn't know something, we worked on the solution together and didn't have to backtrack, wasting time and money. --Working hrs were well kept and I didn't have to worry about my personal tools or materials coming up "lost" or missing. --They really do care about how you feel about your project and have no problem going with the flow when I constantly change my mind on design. --They are physically capable. Say you need a dumpster loaded or 100 sheets of drywall moved around the job site, it's not a problem and nobody complains. --Willingness to learn. I've done alot of improvising with OLD houses and they want to use any experience or knowledge to their advantage. All in all, it is a great experience and I'll have them back to work with me on my personal home this spring. I'll add pictures soon.

My experience was excellent. He was very thourough in explaining all the steps in my addition. I was very comfortable with all the decisions that he made as a contractor as far as having my finincial needs as his best interest, and wasn't just there to make a buck. Was always on Time and when they said they were going to do something they did. Also another thing that I think is very important in a contractor is cleanliness of a job site, and I have used him a lot and they always take the steps necessary to protect your home and stay organized and clean.

Nate is personable and did a great job. He developed a specific plan of attack for the scope of our project(drywall and priming), and he also adjusted along the way. He does good work, too. In fact, we have already recommended him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
