Had a 40' tree trimmed away from my power and utility drop lines. Tom stopped out to look at the job prior to issuing a quote, gave me a very reasonable rate, and the job was done professionally. Tree looks good and everything was cleaned up before they left. I would definitely recommend TJM for tree and landscaping services.

Bill was amazing and everything that had to be cut back, trimmed up, cut down an put into a neat pile to haul away. My yard looks great. Everything was done professionally and quickly. Bill even sprayed after trimming. Anything that I needed he went above and beyond what I asked for and his price was beyond fair. I had neighbors calling that now want to hire him and I have him coming back permanently from time to time to trim up. He will also be doing some other handyman jobs for me. I had no idea I would find a person I was so comfortable with that could do so much. Thank you Bill for making what I thought was going to be a complicated situation finding and trusting a contractor to do jobs in the yard and in the house that need done without any worry and professionally done in a timely manner. You will be hearing from me for other things in the yard and house as we discussed and I'm very comfortable with hiring Bill again. I thankful and satisfied customer. Kimberly

Brian signed on to help us remedy a bad situation left by another contractor. He provided professional support from the initial consultation thru completion of the job. He and his crew were polite and pleasant. You could see they truly enjoyed their work and it showed. The job looks awesome – couldn’t be more pleased. There is a reason why they have been voted #1 concrete contractor two years running. I would absolutely recommend Brian and Concrete FX without hesitation.

Refreshing to meet a contractor who understands and uses technology. I used Dwayne to consult on the proper configuration for my sink & disposal. It gave me problems for years. He evaluated it and proposed new piping. It seems much better although I'm only on day one. Price was reasonable. Labor and parts was below $150. Wish I had done with the first problem! Expert advice is hard to get. Dwayne was the first to see that the pipe direction was wrong. Thank you.

Zach did a great job for us on 2 of our rental properties. We've been through 3 other contractors in the last 6 months who gave us a quote and then disappeared or did a portion of the work and then never came back. Zach was at the homes within a couple days of approving the quote and he did an excellent job fixing damaged concrete on the steps, retaining wall, and sidewalk. We will definitely be using him again in the future!

Bishop Contracting I found to be opposite the usual experience found with many of today's contractors. He came when he said he would come. He did the work he said he would do. He completed the job in the time frame agreed. He had the tools, equipment and materials necessary to do the job the 1st time around. He charged what he said he would charge. If you are looking for slick brochures, fancy web sites or IPAD presentations look elsewhere. If you are looking to get a job done call Bishop Contracting.

Sergey did a great job in our bathroom. He is responsive and detail oriented and his price was fair and competitive. He showed up on time and when he said he was going to. That is a quality that is hard to find in some contractors these days.

Dino was professional in every interaction whether in person or on the phone. He always answered his phone when I called or returned my message quickly. He listened carefully to the work I wanted done (construction of concrete parking pads) and provided a timely and fair quote. While I ultimately decided to hire another contractor for the project Dino remained professional and respectful even as I communicated that I was going in a different direction for the project. I would definitely consider hiring Decano Construction for future concrete projects.

Jake cuts my grass and does snow removal for me. He is extremely professional and very prompt. It is great to have someone so reliable. Also, he applied mulch and edged my flower beds this past Spring. The edging was the best I've ever seen. I'm very pleased with his work ethic.

About 10 years ago Precision Hardscapes installed a rather complex wall system for my parents. I have a degree in Landscape Architecture and I have to say that they did a great job! About 2 years ago we hired RJ and his crew to complete a rather large wall behind our house. Again, it was a great experience. They showed up when they said they would and RJ handled the project with great professionalism and expertise. We plan on hiring them again next year for another wall in the front of our house. It's so refreshing to have a contractor do exactly what they say they are going to do with no nonsense. These guys are real pros. If you want a job done right and on time, I highly recommend Precision Hardscapes.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
