Andrew did a great job removing a small wall from my house which involved cutting out a portion of drywall through a few metal studs - with some problem-solving along the way.

Best person to work with. In addition to the dishwasher install, had to install a new garbage disposal with wiring, install whole house water filter, instal faucets for slop sink and a bathroom.. he was very kind and took care of everything the same day. very professional and top notch work quality.. some leaks came up next day, Ernie was very professional, came back and fixed everything. Very reasonable price for all these.. Highly recommend and definitely will come back for all my future plumbing needs..

Mr. DeOliveira was very professional. He gave me a quote and stuck to it. He showed up on time and did a great job installing s cement pad in the front of my house. He came back the next day and finished the work. Finally he had to come back a week later and repair the job after a truck backed into the house and damaged the concrete. Mr. DeOliveira came right out promptly and fixed the damaged pad at no charge. I would highly recommend DeOliveira Construction. Tom Steeves, Bellingham, MA

If you need any drywall or plaster projects completed, look no further. Greenland visited our home on a Sunday the following day after we submitted our request on Saturday. He took a look at our project and volunteered to repair dome other areas we needed done. Price was right, and job was completed in less than a week from when we made our request. He's nest and accurate with his work and the quality of his work speaks for itself. We are finishing our room above the garage and we won't need to ask around, Greeland is our guy for all things wall and ceiling related. You won't be disappointed.

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

Initially I was simply looking for someone to complete the final stages of a stalled renovation on my bathroom, after chatting with Joe, who owns the company, & several others, I hired Joe to do the work. Even though the work on the bathroom was 75% complete, Joe still spent a good amount of time talking with me about options for finishing the work/ getting the best result...in short, that time spent by Joe upfront, in discussing options, as well as the extremely acute attention to detail while he was completing the work, resulted in an outstanding end result for a price that was less than i had originally assumed. In fact Joe's work was so good, & my comfort level with his skill set & commitment to ensuring the job was done RIGHT, so high, that the day he finished the bathroom i asked him to take on TWO even larger project ( both of which I had put off for years) one involved demolishing our existing back porch & rebuilding it, literally from scratch, framing, walls , window, floor, & the other was the complete drywalling/ painting and a new epoxy Floor for our 2 car garage. As of Yesterday BOTH of these major projects are complete, & I could not be happier with the results.. or with the cost. Cost is not the first factor but it HAS to play a role, and this guy, does not price his jobs as if he is planning to retire on my project alone. Overall a great experience and i would hire Joe again in a heartbeat.

We highly recommend Paul and his team. These guys were easy to work with, extremely responsive to our needs, and reasonable on price. We had a family room that was covered in wood panels. Everything was taken down and replaced with drywall along with installing a picture window. They were very helpful throughout the entire process and had a great eye for detail. Paul and the guys were respectful in getting the project well-done within a quick time frame. I would hire again for future housing needs.

Erik replainted my 600 sq ft apartment that had about 3 decades of paint coats underneath that caused all sorts of cracking. He scraped all loose paint and plaster and the dug out cracks in the plaster to insure that they don't come back. Then he skim coated, primed and painted the walls. He was courteous, professional, fair, and detail oriented. He even caught a building leak that would've caused expensive damage to my apartment and the one above it. He was very self-sufficient and friendly to building staff and neighbors when I wasn't around. He also communicated the perfect amount so I knew what was going on, what the time table would be, and understood all the costs. Highly recommended.

Carlos is so great to work with. He responded quickly, gave us a quote, and was extremely flexible when we asked him to do additional projects. He stuck with the quoted price even when one of the projects was more complicated than originally estimated. Our walls were transformed in less than 2 days with quality workmanship for a fair price. They aren't even painted yet and I feel like it's a different house. Carlos is very polite, patient, easy to communicate with, and he cleans up thoroughly after the work is done. We will have him back for additional work in the next couple of weeks and our neighbor decided to hire him for some work as well. I would highly recommend him for any of your drywall needs.

I have to say initially we were a bit skeptical about hiring someone through an app. However, Dan Gillam blew away our expectations and truly showed his value from the beginning of the project until the completion. He made sure he was available for my concerns and questions and did not make me feel like I was being a scolded child when he explained his work to me. He worked with my schedule. He made me feel comfortable and has a no-pressure attitude. He was confident in his trade and the results spoke volumes. I would recommend him in a heart beat. My family recently bought our home knowing that it needed improvement. We found Dan through thumbtack and asked him to assess a wall in our master bedroom where the seams in the drywall were splitting. He was able to diagnose the issue within moments of coming into our home and he fixed it quickly. His prices are very reasonable as well. We are already planning on having him back to assist with the bulk of our updating projects. So beyond thrilled we were able to find a reliable and affordable tradesman through an app. Who knew?

On professionalism: Curley was very knowledgeable. He knew exactly what to do and how to fix issues around my condo. Not only is he an expert in his industry, he has a lot of connections to help with other issues. For example, my home needed plumbing, electrical, and a bunch of other things. He knew great contacts to fix those issues. I am an impatient individual and I can say I feel confident in Curley to get things done at my speed. He is responsive at all hours and days. He never seems 'too busy' for me even when he is with other projects. On work quality: Fantastic! I couldn't ask for better. Every crack, hole, patch or imperfection was covered up and looks like new. I am not one to let the small things go and he lived up to my expectations. Colors are evenly distributed. There were no uneven patches especially in the corners of the walls. On behavior: Very easy to work with or should I say was able to deal with me. I know I am a meticulous and stressed individual and if he can deal with me, he can make any customer happy. Curley is honest and respectful. He genuinely wants to help you not to rip you off. His prices are affordable. I ended up giving him extra for all the work he put in because his work was worth it. Also, he and his guys will clean up after themselves so you don't have to worry about a mess after they are done! Highly recommended. Honestly, don't look anywhere else. Curley&Lad's is your go-to.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
