Eric is a conscientious and pleasant person in nature to deal with. I have found him professional and highly skilled. I had described the issues I was having prior to his arrival and planned on a certain scope of work to be done. After Eric reviewed the situation I had, he was honest about not feeling the need to replace something that didn't really need replacing. Not many contractors would reveal that and just replace to charge more. We had a glitch or two with scheduling and timing of appointments, but we worked it out. Eric has integrity and does the right thing. I will definitely hire Quality Repair Services again.

Jonathan and Stephen have been absolutely fabulous!!! They took the time to unblock all the gutters, took several photos of before and after the job, and proceeded to all the necessary repairs! they took care of all the plants lying beneath their ladders and after the job cleaned around the perimeter of the house. A very throrough and careful service. I will certainly call this company back for regular gutter cleaning and general maintenance.

Shujaur was wonderful and very responsive. We are property managers and have had him do a few projects for us (including snow removal) and each time he sent a picture once the job was completed to let us know it was done and done right.

I had a chimney cricket redone and some general repairs to my roof. Weathertite responded promptly, came out the next day and did the work as agreed. James and his sons were a pleasure to work with. The work done carries a 10 year warranty and I am happy that they stand behind their work.

We needed railings put back onto our front porch after having our steps repointed and and a step replaced (this also required a hole to be drilled into the new stone step). Our previous contractors ditched us before finishing. Paul was great. He responded quickly and gave us what we thought was a fair price for the work. He was able to get over to do the work within a few days, and did a great job. He also helped us with some plumbing issues while he was here. He is easy to work with, communicates well, and does solid work. I'd highly recommend him.

Very consultative and supportive. Great recommendations for completely converting HVAC system throughout an antique home (circa 1862). Included a quality team of vendors to support the efforts, ie. duct work, electrician and general carpenter.

ER Construction is by far the best company we have ever had do work on our home. We have had some horrible experiences in the past with contractors who didn't show up, finish work promised, were sloppy and rude. ER Construction has finished all the work in our 1850 colonial and it has surpassed our expectations. The painting, floor refinishing, ceiling repair, and floor installation has been incredible and we are having them paint the exterior as well. We are very happy and satisfied and are recommending them to everyone we know!

As a frequent Thumbtack user, I've had a lot of contractors work on my house including other painters. Cleynira Construction and the owner Cody are by far the best we've ever used. They painted the outside of our 1950 colonial and it looks fantastic!! Cody also used his construction skills to remedy some tricky wood rot in some decorative detailing areas near that I thought would be very difficult to fix. If you want superior quality work at a very competitive price, I highly recommend these guys. I'm extremely happy with their work and I will rehire them at every opportunity.

We own a 1920's colonial. When we purchased the house the walls were original, in very bad condition and had not been painted in many years. Over the past 10+ years Troy has restored, repaired and painted the walls and woodwork in every room in the house. He takes pride in his workmanship and attention to detail. He's methodically patched holes, cracks & imperfections in our old walls. The time spent here was far more than the actual painting. His at times slightly higher estimates have always accurately reflected the hours spent prepping the surfaces. Last summer (2016) Troy acted as general contractor when we did a major remodel of our very large & in bad shape 4 season sun porch. Again, we were thrilled with the end result. He was available and responsive when an inevitable (but minor) miscommunication arose between myself and the electrician. He worked quickly to remedy the situation. The room was transformed to a comfortable space that my family enjoys everyday

Very pleased with Bob and his crew. After two years of being jerked around by various contractors and friends who said they could "easily do this" we finally found RM Paolino Construction. Bob met with us on a Saturday and gave us a detailed estimate with some great cost-saving design changes for our kitchen and bathroom. We signed a contract that following Friday and by Monday morning our bathroom was gutted and on its way. What a relief it's been to deal with a real contractor after all time we wasted with other so called "professionals". Bob has kept us up to speed every step of the way and the bathroom looks great. Can't wait for kitchen to start. Highly recommend RM Construction to anyone looking for a professional, full service contractor who won't give you the run around!

They concentrated on MY job, MY schedule and MY ideas. Kept me abreast of work schedules, are very considerate, are very family oriented (both mine and theirs) and were very flexible. Happy to have them in my home. Very strong work ethic. Helped to coordinate other contractors work. (Also people you would want in your home.) Quite satisfied with their work. The room is lovely!

We had Victor and Bay State redo our master bathroom. They did an excellent job and communicated what was happening each day on the project. Everything from the plumbing and electrical to the tile work and fixture installation, paint and woodwork was beautiful. Next time we need a contractor we will hire them again.

Richard was the first contractor to respond to my inquiry and within three days of my job request, Richard quoted the work, bought supplies and completed the job. I was also very grateful that he fixed two other things that weren't even on the task list and he didn't charge extra. I plan on calling Richard when I'm ready with a few more things that need fixing around my house.

Last week my husband and I contracted with Woody's Home Improvement to install a new railing in the entry of our raised ranch home and tile back splash in the kitchen. We honestly could not be happier. In the past we have had other contractors who always left a mess and never put finishing touches on jobs. However, Woody paid so much attention to every detail from start to finish. He offered us design ideas and options for both jobs. He thoroughly explained how each job would be done and estimated the time and dollar amount with great accuracy! =) We have an 8 month old in the house and he was so considerate about noise and cleaning up after each job so our little one didn't find any left over nails or pieces of wood. I truly believe you just can't find good contractors like Woody these days. He is the guy that will treat your home as if it were his own. He improved both the safety and value of our house with these two jobs. We wish we could rate him with 10 stars!

Working with Keith & David was very much a relief to me and my worries. I heard of them in the past but found them through here. Keith came and met me, gave me a price for my roof that was leaking, the price was very fair and explained what I was getting for it. I loved that everyday they worked Keith was here with them. Very professional and curtious to us and our neighbors. After the roof was done he told me that every nail we could find would result in a credit for 5$ each lol. Me and husband looked all day the next day to try and lower our balance, we found NONE. He is soon to start our next project being a addition for a garage attached with a master bedroom and bath above it. Can't wait to begin in the spring. I still can't believe that there's contractors out there like Keith & David that we can have faith in. Those catch a contractor shows and the bad things we always hear about don't apply to these guys. I hope to help them however I can with this review. I'll be glad to be of service to those still undecided. Thank you guys so much. Best part is the day we agreed to hire them, they immediately tarped the roof were it was leaking to prevent anymore damage before they would begin. I almost cried over that. It meant so much to us, being that we are elder.

Jay responded quickly, gave an estimate and scheduled the job in a timely manner. He actually came and completed the fence repair within the time frame he gave. Had really bad experiences with contractors even showing up in the past. Jay was a breath of fresh air. Very polite and professional and did good work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
