Eric is my go to guy for all my plumbing needs. He came in and helped fix a bathroom that a previous contractor had destroyed at a reasonable and fair price. He is trustworthy, knowledgeable and goes out of his way to accommodate my schedule. I don't even bother bidding projects out anymore. I trust his opinion and his skills. I will be using him exclusively for my future home repairs and plumbing needs.

I had a last minute need to move a sofa up to a second floor apartment. I contacted First Service USA. They responded within minutes and were available the next day. Ralf and Gabriel showed up early and were extremely professional and helpful. Not only did they carefully move the furniture, but they assembled all the electrical in the recliners, without even being asked. They did a great job ane at a more than fair price. We will definitely be hiring them again for a number of home improvement projects we’ll have coming up. Great job!

I had a small repair job that I needed done on my carpet. I had a really hard time finding someone who was willing to do such a small repair. Thankfully, Shawn Selden from Sharp Skill Floor Coverings saved the day! He came out to my home and took care of the repair, no problem. He was an incredibly nice guy! very courteous and honest. Shawn was upfront on pricing and was very reasonable. I will most definitely hire him again and also recommend Sharp Skill Floor Covering to any friends, family, or anyone who needs a flooring project done. Clearly, no job is too small...Thanks Shawn!

John and his team were wonderful to work with. They quoted the job fairly, scheduled a time for my “junk” and old hot tub to be removed, they showed up on time, and I came home to a clean area! I couldn’t have asked for an easier experience and had wanted to get rid of that stuff for so long. John was such a pleasure to work with. So nice. Thank you!!

I felt very comfortable having this company at my house. I would highly recommend them and would certainly use them again myself.

Called Ernie on short notice due 2 leak coming from ceiling. Came out promptly when I said it was an emergency while others kept trying 2 schedule me for next day or couple of days out. Even though he came at night, was surprised he was ready to get to the job right away and diagnosed the problem promptly. He explained everything simply and honestly and took pictures of the damage and showed it to me and showed me the area of damage. He worked quickly to repair the leak and was in and out without wasting my time. Quiet impressive. He was very friendly too. Will definitely recommend him and hire him again if I have any problems in the future.

I am very pleased with Steve Wood - we talked about what I needed over the phone and he was able to suggest what I should have on hand prior to his doing the work. He arrived on time, got right down to business, and did a great job. I'm very happy with the work and will definitely hire him again for plumbing work in my home.

Cleynira made time the same day I reached out, met me at the house, I showed home some areas in need of repair and he said, "No problem, I can start tomorrow." He and his crew arrived the next day as stated and finished the following morning. All cleaned up and very pleasant throughout. Very please with his quick response, and fast work.

As a new homeowner, I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have an electrician as wonderful as Pete. We have had our fare share of awful contractors over the last few months, but Lev Electric is not one of them! I will forever refer to Pete as 'My electrician'! This was the second time I have had Lev Electric do work in my home and Pete was able to squeeze me in around a busy schedule and on short notice. Lev Electric will forever be my 'go to' and I will recommend to anyone and everyone in need of an electrician.

I was preparing my house for sale and I needed a number of repairs made to boost my sale price. I hired Mr. Paolino to rebuild and paint my front porch, repair my concrete walkway and assess and repair my roof and my chimney. All of these projects were completed on budget and within my tight time frame. They were in and out and left my property clean for my showings.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

As a retired Maintenance Manager USPS Boston District, for 35 years. I was impressed with Artie's ability to assess the job, provide a estimated cost in my home. His work was exemplary, clean, professional, knowable about the work and his instructions to maintain the equipment going forward. If I had the chance years ago I would have hired Artie to a career appointment. This is the man you want for your plumbing needs. He scheduled the appointment and was promptly on time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
