Steve was great to work with, very professional and prompt. He did an excellent job building/installing a fence with a gate and a new screen door for us. I took his advice and everything came out better than I had hoped. I highly recommend his services and look forward to working with him again.

Raif and his partner did a fabulous job assembling and installing a basket-ball hoop and a 30 foot guard net in my driveway. After they had finished the job, I asked them to install some floating shelves in my family room and they gladly obliged. They are a great team and I highly recommend them. I will definitely hire them again in the future for more assembly/handyman work.

My home is for sale. On 3.27.17-an abandoned underground oil tank was removed from the driveway. The great news is that it passed inspection! However-the front of the property was understandably a muddy mess. David responded to my request promptly and was quickly completed the clean-up on 3.26.17. David and his assistant did an awesome job-and the exterior is ready for appraisal review this morning! Also-David installed 3 battery fire/carbon alarms-I am now ready to submit my fire inspection application. Additionally-David and his assistant removed small items of junk from the backyard-the home looks even more "move-in ready"!!! Lastly-David was friendly-polite-and professional. He has worked in the past with realtors concerning renovation projects. He knew exactly what was needed-I felt confident returning to work and leaving him to complete the projects-which he did. Thank you David! I would hire again.

Gabe and Team did a great job. Initially the project was scoped to be a relatively simple siding project, with some replacement windows, and a addition of some windows or enlarging windows, and new door. But then before it started I, i threw Gabe a curve ball and asked to add the cost to remove the existing siding vs going over it as planned. Gabe agreed to do it and gave a reasonable cost. After the removing of siding, they found two support walls with lots of rot due to water and termite damage. Gabe and team handled this very well, and nice part is they had the skills to repair the walls, so work wasn't halted while we found someone to repair. This also totally threw off Gabe job schedule, but he accommodated the repairs and was able finished the Job as a whole in reasonable time given the situation. Gabe is very responsive. You can call or Text him and usually in under an hour he calls you back. He also explains everything he going to do in detail, and also if you have a question on my he is doing it a certain way , he will always take the time and give you the full details. He was very accommodating while working at your home. For example ,as my yard didn't have enough room for a dumpster, and if one was delivered we would have lost our driveway (we live on main street with two young kids). Gabe said that he didn't need a dumpster, and he just load up his trucks and remove it himself. This made our live much easier. Gabe prices were always very reasonable for the work performed. i can highly recommend House Pro.

Jean DaCosta (Landscaping) plowed my driveway. after the Jan. 23 blizzard. He did a fabulous job, even shoveling my patio which is the main. entrance we use. I have a long driveway and it winds to the back where there is large area and a two car garage. WOW! Right down to the pavement. I posted his fine work on my Facebook page, including a picture and his business name. I

We have been using K&S Remodeling for over a year to do various construction and maintenance and have been extremely happy working with them. They did a major repair of ice damage from the winter of 2015, they built a large 3 bay shed, the rebuilt one of our original 1920 outbuildings and then they remodeled the kitchen and bath of our 1870's farm house. These projects all entailed some serious construction/reconstruction. We had to remove an exterior wall, shore up the supports in the basement, and install support beams where we opened up exterior walls. All the work was done diligently with an eye towards perfection at each step of the process. Not only would I recommend them to my friends, I fully intend to use them for more projects.

I have known Tony for approximately 15 years. During that time he has built a deck, a porch, recreated a sunroom, tiled a backsplash and multiple floors, painted various structures/rooms, built a greenhouse and most recently a custom fence with gate. He works when he says he will and always hits the agreed-upon budget. I look forward to many more years of trusted improvements to my home.

Our experience was great with Thom and Cumberland Fence. The process was quick; Thom met for a home visit to inspect the site for our small fence project, discussed options and our desired result, took measurements, and gave an estimated cost. Because our project was relatively small, +/- 35' w/two gates, few fence installers would respond. We replied the next day and the turnaround was within a week. The installation took a few hours, involved working with an existing wood fence, cutting into asphalt, and creating two different sized gates. We wanted to close in our yard for our dog, while giving our 1920s bungalow cottage a fence that would compliment it. The end result: a great looking fence, clean installation, and overall quality. Thom and his crew are professionals. Will recommend!

He was knowledgeable, hardworking and extremely flexible with scheduling. He will be our new go to for any upcoming projects. Hire him! You won’t regret it!!!

My baby gates were perfectly installed. Beth had great attention to detail and showed me her work at certain steps to be sure it was what I wanted. Well worth the money to do this installation correctly. I will definitely hire her again for anything in my house. I only wish I met her sooner!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
