We have been putting off having our gutters cleaned for years. Not only that but we didn't know a reputable contractor to perform that service. I found Thumbtack, and received 5 quotes with reviews. Stephen McKenna replied within hours with a reasonable quote and assured me that he would be able to do the job by the end of the week. I was delighted, especially because it is December and I thought it was too late. I gave him the chance to change his quote because our house is big, but he did not. He came when he said, cleaned up the area to perfection, and even emailed me before and after pictures of my gutters. Stephen McKenna does all types of home improvement work; I would hire him again and recommend him without hesitation. GS-Seekonk

Everything you could ask for and more! I usually never write reviews, but when it comes to hiring people and it companies to do work I felt important to share. We all know how difficult it is to find a good contractor. Elsayed came out on a Sunday and worked tirelessly until the job was done. Installed 3 toilets, dishwasher, garbage disposal, 2 faucet fixtures. Also corrected numerous plumbing issues in the process. From start to finish he let me know what was going on every step of the way. His recommendations were spot on as he came across other issues throughout the project. I always felt confident everything would get done right and did it ever! Never strayed from the up front and honest pricing. I’ve already rehired Elsayed to do more work in my home as OSA is a full service general contractor. Hire with absolute confidence!!!

Stella turned an existing upstairs bed room into a bathroom. Work was done well overall, and it was a pleasure working with Erik. I especially appreciate his ability to reply to e-mails and texts within minutes, something that most other contractors I vetted for the job couldn't manage in days, or in some cases, not a all. Stella was very helpful in the planning process, and managed all the permitting/inspection work with ease. I would definitely recommend them.

Todd was responsive and was the best value for dollar of other quotes. He made time for me under time constrains that others could not meet. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a quality contractor in the area. I sell real estate for a living and will recommend him to other home owners who need his services.

As a frequent Thumbtack user, I've had a lot of contractors work on my house including other painters. Cleynira Construction and the owner Cody are by far the best we've ever used. They painted the outside of our 1950 colonial and it looks fantastic!! Cody also used his construction skills to remedy some tricky wood rot in some decorative detailing areas near that I thought would be very difficult to fix. If you want superior quality work at a very competitive price, I highly recommend these guys. I'm extremely happy with their work and I will rehire them at every opportunity.

Mr . Paolino has from the start been very prompt responding to my emails and answering questions. Once we settled on the first project that needed immediate attention, which was my leaking roof, he was here first thing in the morning and completed the work that day. It was just done recently but from what I can see, he has done a very thorough, neat and sound job and I'm very pleased with the results. I plan to continue using his company for several other repairs my aging home needs. It's a pleasure to have someone who can handle all repairs, upgrades and even remodeling instead of searching for individual contractors for these different areas of concern. I would say that anyone can expect to receive services from a man that takes pride in his work with the results, speaking for themselves in quality Yet he also cares that he has satisfied the expectations of his customer's request and needs.

I really feel like I hit the jackpot when I went on Thumbtack and without knowing anything about the drywall contractors on the site, I randomly picked Joseph Drywall. I don't think there is a more reliable and professional team with such great work ethic and abilities. I am beyond pleased with the work hey did to restore my home after experiencing significant water damage. My home looks brand new and I could not be more happier! Thank you Joseph Drywall! My husband and I have been home-owners for more than 35 years. This summer, Desire Construction cleaned up our backyard, extended our patio with pavers, and fixed a drain pipe. This was hands-down the best experience with a home contractor that we have ever had. Mr. Guimaraes responded promptly to our request for a quote. We had to wait several weeks while his company completed other jobs, but Mr. Guimaraes contacted us in advance of their start date. He came when he said he would, and his group worked hard and completed the job in a timely manner. We are very pleased with the results and would definitely hire him again.

We hired Justin to do a little framing for us and he has since done a multitude of other jobs around our house. He is very skilled and knowledgeable about all facets of construction. If there’s something you need done that’s outside of his expertise he will point you to reliable contractors you can trust. We will continue to utilize his services on this project and in future projects. Justin is very personable, trustworthy and fair on pricing. You won’t regret hiring him and, like us, you will likely be adding him to your contact list so you can reach him whenever you need help! He is sincerely a pure joy to work with. Thank you, Justin!

Go Green completed our home project on time and within our budget. We had a slider door and window replaced that required some reframing, removing and reinstalling siding, weather barrier and insulation. Frank and Ivan were true and experienced professionals- they arrived on time, were very polite, worked diligently, had a keen eye for detail and were very thorough. As with any project some unforeseen problems came up that could not have been anticipated. Julio worked with us to adjust the project’s hours; and Frank and Ivan offered a creative and aesthetically pleasing solution to a problem that would have sky-rocketed the overall cost. They wiped down everything before they left and completely cleaned up all debris. Finding a great contractor is always challenging for a homeowner. There are so many to choose from and most make claims that ultimately fall short or run well over-budget. Go Green was the most affordable and competitively priced company we consulted for our project; they exceeded ALL expectations and did a fantastic job! They will be getting repeat business from us.

We had Victor and Bay State redo our master bathroom. They did an excellent job and communicated what was happening each day on the project. Everything from the plumbing and electrical to the tile work and fixture installation, paint and woodwork was beautiful. Next time we need a contractor we will hire them again.

Services Provided; Total kitchen redesign complete with new floorplan layout. Consulting for cabinet options, cabinet and drawer insert options as well as countertop, appliance and flooring suggestions. Service received; Mike allowed us the choice of using any contractor for any construction services. We opted to do our own demo and electrical to save a little money but chose to use his contractor and were very glad we did! He was very easy to work with and did great work. My wife and I were very pleased with the finished project. I think the two things that made this project more than "Pretty & Practical" were, price and Mikes service! From the four estimates we received, Kitchen Options was not the least expensive but it was affordable. Mike's part in this was everything you'd want in a general manager of a project such as this. If he wasn't always available all the time he returned my calls, texts or e-mail right a way. He always answered uestions and provided information clearly, professionally and friendly! It made made our big, stess filled project get completed easier than expected.

Richard was the first contractor to respond to my inquiry and within three days of my job request, Richard quoted the work, bought supplies and completed the job. I was also very grateful that he fixed two other things that weren't even on the task list and he didn't charge extra. I plan on calling Richard when I'm ready with a few more things that need fixing around my house.

The level of detail, care, professionalism, promptness and kindness I received from these guys is second to none. It’s hard to find any type of contractor who is honest with excellent skill but these guys nailed it. They showed up when they promised, painted the bedroom with amazing attention to detail and care, cleaned up better than I ever could have, and it was all done in a single day. They had to sand and it was my sons room and I was worried the dust would be everywhere but there was no trace of it anywhere. I am extremely detail oriented and I was worried the paint junction between molding and wall and molding and floor would be crooked or sloppy but the level of detail was stunning. These guys will definitely be doing more rooms in my home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
