I had a leak caused by a handyman's work that ran from under my kitchen sink through the sealing of my basement. Eric came on Thanksgiving Day to repair the problem. I have an older house. He even changed some of the tubes that were wearing out. It was clear from the work he did that the handyman tried to take short cuts and I payed the price. Eric stayed until the work was done. He tested the system several times to make sure there were no more leaks.. and there haven't been any. I also found his prices to be reasonable. All in all, what was a nightmare ended up being a good experience. I would definitely use him again.

I would highly recommend McKenna's Handyman Services. They came and cleaned out my gutters. They took before and after photos, cleaned up after themselves and were on time, friendly and professional. Their price was very fair and honest.

I received same day service to hang 3 mirrors in our apartment. Shujaur was punctual. He was precise about the placement of the mirrors and made sure to ask my opinion before drilling any holes into the walls. And he was able to execute the job quickly. I would happily use Shujaur again for his handyman services and I would recommend him to others.

Mark was outstanding. He came on an extremely short notice, right on time--on Fourth of July weekend, no less. I had tried to assemble my couch and completely messed up the threading of the screws and bent one of the legs. That wasn't a problem, he had a set of tools ready and fixed the couch to make it even sturdier than it was constructed by the manufacturer. He did it in about less than an hour. Outstanding job, definitely calling him again for any future "handyman" services.

I asked Joe to remove a satellite dish from the roof (attached to the chimney) of my two family house. He arrived when he said and completed the job in less than a half hour. The job was dangerous but Joe did it without reservation and with great efficiency. Also Joe conducted himself in a friendly and courteous manner. I would definitely recommend Joe Bisson to others for handyman projects,

John was great! He responded quickly to my inquiry and came over the next day to address a range of electrical issues (fixed back porch light, fixed motion detection light, fixed a light switch that wasn’t sitting properly in the switch box) and other random needs ( e.g., fixing latch on backyard gate, fixed a bedroom door latch so the door could close). What I really appreciated is his explanation of everything that he was doing. He even ran out to pick up a piece I needed from Home Depot. His pricing was fair and work quality was great. I will definitely use him again as my go-to electrician/handyman. Thanks John

I contacted Bob yesterday and he was able to do the job today. He hung a very heavy dining room light for us. He is professional and courteous. He took his time to do the job the right way. He was careful to keep the environment clean and he cleaned up after the job was done. I will be calling on Bob again soon for another handyman project.

Mr . Paolino has from the start been very prompt responding to my emails and answering questions. Once we settled on the first project that needed immediate attention, which was my leaking roof, he was here first thing in the morning and completed the work that day. It was just done recently but from what I can see, he has done a very thorough, neat and sound job and I'm very pleased with the results. I plan to continue using his company for several other repairs my aging home needs. It's a pleasure to have someone who can handle all repairs, upgrades and even remodeling instead of searching for individual contractors for these different areas of concern. I would say that anyone can expect to receive services from a man that takes pride in his work with the results, speaking for themselves in quality Yet he also cares that he has satisfied the expectations of his customer's request and needs.

Michael offered great suggestions for paint that worked out incredibly well. My apartment is older and the walls were dull and showed their age. However, after Michael was done with them my apartment looks like a totally different place. He knew exactly what type of paint to use for each surface. I highly recommend Elite Handyman Services.

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
