After almost 20 years of chiropractic care, I had the pleasure of having Dr. Ryan as my doctor!! I could write a novel about the changes he made in my life, with his thoughtful, diligent, and professional care. He constantly worked on my shoulder, to the point that I no longer have pain and can move my arm over my head and even sleep on it!! His physical therapy background was invaluable, and coupled with his extensive chiro skills, it was like a dream come true. His adjustments and therapy helped me be able to keep my job, as he targeted exactly what was going on in my spine, and provided my back and sciatica the relief needed to make it through the day. Ryan is the first chiropractor who actually wanted to get me to the point of less appointments and total wellness, instead of twice a week for the rest of my life. He let me decide when I thought I could try and cut back. I honestly wish I could move to Boston so he could continue to be my chiropractor. Please do not pass up an opportunity to have Dr Ryan help you enjoy your life to the fullest. He changed my life and he can do that for you as well. Thank you for everything Dr. Ryan. May God continue to bless you abundantly.

I've been attending BodyMindSystems for about 3 years. The school made me realize the importance of my physical state and how it affected all the other areas of my life. Even more importantly, it's teaching me a very different perspective of looking at the world and my place in it. This is leading me to actions that are very beneficial to my life and everyone around me, but actions that most likely I would've never considered otherwise. On a physical plane, I've shaved off at least 15-20 years off my biological age. I am now stronger and healthier than I've ever been in my life and I've never been a couch potato. I've always exercised before but now I am at a completely different level and what's even more exciting is that there are so many more levels to go! My 9 year old son has also trained with me for 3 years. I love the fact that we are doing this together. The best way to teach kids anything of value is to do it yourself. Actions always speak louder than words because they are the real litmus test of our beliefs. My son and I might be at different "life levels" but we are both learning the same things: confidence, focus, patience, the importance of intent and positive perspective, and many other qualities that help live life to the fullest. I highly recommend BodyMindSystems to anyone who desires to get the most of their life.

About 35 years ago I suffered a cervical spinal cord injury. Fortunately my paralysis was temporary although I still had uneven strength throughout my body. After several years of both physical and occupational therapy I began weight training at a local fitness center. I continued doing this for several years until pregnancy and childbirth caused me to stop for a long period of time. My child grew older and a new gym opened near my home. I was very excited about it because I definitely felt stronger, healthier and happier when I was exercising regularly. It was there that I first met and worked with Glenn VanLeuven. After several sessions with Glenn I knew that I wanted to continue to work with him. Working with him I was able to achieve levels of fitness that I never would have reached on my own. That was over 15 years ago. To this day I still work with Glenn 3 times a week even through injuries and broken bones. Now as I age, my mobility is not what it used to be but I firmly believe that Glenn's technique, knowledge and encouragement have kept me on my feet and active for these last 15 years and hopefully for many more.

It's not often that you find a massage therapist who is also a trained physical therapist. After every session I feel like a million bucks and I feel like I'm getting better. I would highly recommend her to others.

When I met Beth for the first time I was on oxygen 24/7, and I was very unsteady on my feet and using a cane. I wasn't driving and had many medical problems. A friend of mine insisted I call Senior-Fit for help, especially for my breathing problems. I was unable to even tie my shoes without a lot of difficulty and had fallen several times. At this point in my life, my husband was doing everything for me. That was in January 2015 when we started...twice a week at my home for 1 hour sessions thru August 2015. Fast forward to March 2017, my medications have been reduced, the edema I had been suffering with is gone. I am no longer dependent on oxygen: I am now going to chair yoga classes in a group setting. My anxiety and depression have lifted and I am able to return to my regular chores and outside activities at a 76 years young person's ability. To say Senior-Fit saved my life is an understatement. My trainer helped me regain my physical activity; helped me to meditate on a regular basis and taught me hoe to breathe normally. She is patient caring, understanding and has become a friend I can count on. I thank God for bringing her into my life at a very crucial time. P.R. age 76, Portsmouth RI, March 28, 2017

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the different types of physical therapy?

Physical therapists work with people who have been injured or people who are ill to improve their movement and help them manage their pain. The U.S. Department of Labor explains that physical therapists “are often an important part of rehabilitation, treatment, and prevention of patients with chronic conditions, illnesses, or injuries.” Physical therapists can also choose to specialize in one of nine areas. According to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, these areas of specialization are:

      • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
      • Clinical Electrophysiology
      • Geriatrics
      • Neurology
      • Oncology
      • Orthopaedics
      • Pediatrics
      • Sports and
      • Women's Health

The national average cost for a physical therapist is $60 to $80, although it will cost more if the patient is paying for services out of pocket rather than through insurance. If you have insurance and want to work with a physical therapist for a specialty area, such as oncology or geriatrics, you may need a referral from your general practitioner. Patients who are paying directly for services can often contact the physical therapist directly.

      Why is physical therapy important?

Physical therapy can help you recover range of motion and ease pain after injury, accident or illness. Many people are prescribed physical therapy by their primary care doctor or specialist after a car accident, surgery or sports-related injury. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to start physical therapy, but unless you are paying out of pocket for the services, your insurance provider might require a referral. Physical therapy is also a medical solution for pain associated with chronic illness such as osteoarthritis and can be used for recovery after a stroke or other neurological disorders.

Physical therapy teaches you how to move your body in a safe and healing way to regain strength and movement. During a physical therapy session, the PT will teach you to use medical exercise equipment and approved exercises to regain your lost flexibility and improve your mobility where possible. You may use treadmills, steps, medicine balls, resistance bands, isometric exercises, weights and more. From young children to seniors, patients of any age can benefit from the science-based movements and exercises that encourage flexibility, rebuild muscle, and ease stiff joints.

What exactly does a physical therapist do?

A physical therapist is a health care provider who assists patients with mobility improvement and pain management. Often patients are referred to a physical therapist by a primary care doctor or specialist for help recovering from a surgery or traumatic injury, such as a car crash. Physical therapists help patients manage pain that results from chronic disease and other illness. Physical therapy can help enhance mobility when patients are faced with neurological disorders, such as after a stroke, and provide relief from arthritis or other mobility and pain issues.

A physical therapist uses medical exercise equipment and exercises to empower patients to regain flexibility and mobility where possible. They may use treadmills, steps, medicine balls, resistance bands, isometric exercises, weights and more to improve muscle control and movement. A physical therapist uses physical movement to help heal the patient, but also can sometimes prescribe medication as appropriate. A physical therapist can also become board certified in one of nine specialty areas.

How much does a physical therapy session cost?

The national average cost for a physical therapy session is $60 to $80, although the cost may be higher if the patient pays out of pocket for the services instead of being covered by insurance. Physical therapy sessions may last from 30 to 120 minutes, depending on the therapist and your medical needs. When paying out of pocket, session rates may range from an average of $75-$300 or more, depending on the location, length of session, and specialization of the therapist. Standard out-of-pocket rates average $150 per session. According to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, physical therapists may become board certified in one of nine specialties: Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Sports, and Women's Health. To receive this board specialist certification, the physical therapist must complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical work in their specialty area and pass an exam. A physical therapist who is board certified in a specialty may charge higher rates to account for their advanced training and expertise.
