Shawn quoted me a price for installing a tile backsplash in our kitchen. When he arrived to start the job, he realized it was glass mosaic which would probably cause the price to increase. I understood and we agreed to move forward. His work was methodical and precise. He suggested a couple of things to make the finished work better if we ever changed out the stove etc. After setting the entire backsplash, he informed me that he would not charge any uncharge for the glass tile. He came back the second day to grout. He was extremely meticulous and paid attention to every little detail. Before leaving he made sure we were satisfied with the work. I highly recommend Shawn to anyone who needs kitchen or bath design or tile work done. You won't be disappointed.

Alex completely remodeled two bathrooms for us. His work is extremely high quality and he takes great pride in everything he does. It's very hard to find a great contractor who you can trust, one that not only shows up on time but completed the job right the first time. The best part about hiring him is he can literally do everything, from tiling, electrical, plumbing etc. he very rarely subcontracts anything. That not only saves you a lot of time but also money. He stands behind everything he does. Good luck finding someone who will do that if they subcontract many things. If Alex is not doing the work himself, he directly oversees all work completed. He ensures you are 100% happy with everything. He walks around with you to explain all details and again verifies you are happy before leaving. Alex and his crew completed everything on budget, and ahead of schedule. I would highly recommend him to everyone. Thanks again for your amazing work!

JR and his team installed hardwood flooring for our home renovation in addition to a tile backsplash, window installation, among other items. The experience was amazing. What I loved about working with JR was that he always showed up when he said he would (huge on my list), and quickly addressed any problems that would arise during the process (inevitable with an circa 1880 home renovation). There were 2 items that I appreciated specifically about JR. One was his ability to think through the project ahead of time and explain any potential issues that may arise ahead of time. This saved valuable time during our project. The other was the balance between his creative skills and his ability to take what was in his head (or ideas I had), visualize and understand them, and then build them on the spot. That was something I did not expect and was pleasantly surprised by. I have and will continue to refer anyone I know to JR and his crew for any residential and commercial work. His pricing simply cannot be beat (I tried) and his quality stands up to anyone. You just don't find both of those together in one contractor these days. Thank you JR for a job well done!

This by far has been the very best experience we have had in 30 years of doing home remodeling/repairs. Rob and Tony are both very professional and I simply can not say enough about how relieved I am to find a company like this to use for future improvements. We had our very large kitchen tiled and Rob came with his showroom and let me look at samples, was upfront about cost and the time required to complete the job and what it would entail (meaning everything gets moved around and out of place temporarily).. I never felt one second of angst or discomfort even with all the work being done (taking out of the flooring that was down, scraping, incredible amount of work). Robs plumber showed up early to reinstall the toilet in sink in the bathroom off the kitchen and patiently waited for Tony to finish that room instead of blowing it off and rescheduling for another day (which would of put that room out of commission even longer). The final product is just beautiful, precisely done and again I couldn't ask for a better team. Tony was there working hard, but never in the way and personable and after many years of workers doing things in our homes, I just will not use anyone else. Thanks FloorCoverings International! I look forward to new carpet soon, and new tile down in our front hall..even sooner.

Phil did a classic white subway tile backsplash for me. When I told him I had an idea to shiplap the rest of my kitchen, he offered to help. He even built some industrial wooden/iron floating shelves! He’s been a great kitchen remodeler and was extremely patient with me when I tried to explain my ideas.

He recently repaired the tile that we had installed by some hack. Mr Dorin was professional and arrived on time. He stuck by his quote even though it took longer to complete than he anticipated. I would definitely recommend him to anyone wanting a professional who is reasonably priced. He is great!

Tom is great! I bought a house just over a year ago. He has basically redone my house. He has always been friendly, on-time, cost conscious with materials, and has competitive prices for a professional of his experience. I have always felt safe around him and am comfortable with him in my house even if I can't be there. I would recommend him to anyone! If you are interested in the work he has done for me, see below. Electrical: all fixtures, replaced all outlets and switches, installed additional outlets and cable jacks, rerouted switches, garage door opener. Walls/Ceilings: scraped popcorn and refinished ceilings, major wallpaper removal, repaired holes (big) in walls and ceiling, retaped and finished broken seams, fresh paint throughout (the best painting I have ever seen). Flooring: removed carpet, installed hardwoods, installed travertine tile, repaired subfloor water damage. Plumbing: replaced various water lines, replaced broken water heater, installed new toilets. Misc: removed all old appliances and installed new appliances including a built in microwave, repaired rotted wood on exterior trim, painted exterior door/trim, pressure washed driveway, trimmed tree limbs back from house, installed new towel bars/tp holders, removed plate mirrors and installed medicine cabinets, refinished some cabinets, changed all the cabinet hardware, replaced all door hinges and knobs. Just too many little miscellaneous things to mention!

Pat did several home improvement projects at our house over the last few years that we are highly satisfied with. Some of these home improvement projects include the construction of a custom bookshelf and a custom wine refrigerator, the construction of a custom shower, custom pluming for a pot filler, the installation of a kitchen backsplash, the replacement of tile flooring (and sub flooring), the installation of granite a counter top, drywall repair, wall and ceiling painting, and landscaping. He did all of this work very well and he did so much less money than his competitors. We highly recommend him to anyone looking to have interior or exterior home improvements or restorations done! We hope to have him do more work for us in the future.

Fantastic! Jesse came to evaluate the job and understand what I was looking for in a back splash. He promptly gave me the price and went to work. Creating a niche for my oils and condiments while I cook behind my cooktop. I have glass subway tile. It took only 1 full day and a quick return trip to grout and it was all complete. Jesse was courteous and knew his stuff with the tile placement. I will have him back when we redo our bathrooms. Great experience for us.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

        • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
          • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
        • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
        • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
