David responded quickly to our request for service. He was on time for appointment and performed the work as scheduled. Dave and his crew did an outstanding job removing a large oak tree in the backyard that was in a tight space and trimmed other trees as requested. Clean-up was excellent and met all expectations. Very professional and reasonably priced. I would recommend Palmetto Pros to others.

Carlos did a great job cutting and edging our front and back lawns. The backyard in particular was a mess and it looks fabulous now. We've now hired Carlos for biweekly service.

These guys cut down a dead pine in our backyard, without harming any of my wife's azelas that where surrounding the base. They exceeded what I would expect from a tree removal company.

I had Ken pick up 2 1/2 yards of compost from the city and deliver to my home to fill two raised beds in my backyard. He arrived on time as we had prearranged the week before and wheelbarrowed The compost to my beds. Ken is friendly and carries a good conversation while he works. He will be doing some additional work for me in the future. I highly recommend his landscaping services.

Chris was great! I would recommend him to anyone looking to make improvements to their landscaping. I was impressed with how quickly he responded to my messages and how fast he completed the work. What took me a weekend to do on my own, he finished in 2.5 hours. He listened to what I wanted for my backyard and then provided great recommendations that fit in my budget. I was extremely pleased with his work. If I wasn't selling my house, I would definitely hire Chris again.

My experience with Matt has been outstanding! I was in desperate need of lawn care for my Mom since I live outside the Metro area (NY State) and unable to do it myself. I tried another service for one cycle and then Matt called....... He was very personable and seemed passionate about landscaping. I could tell that he took great pride in his work in addition to his ultimate goal of beautifying our lawn for many years to come. Matt was very punctual when he dropped by to give us a quote. In comparison other services, Matt's prices are VERY reasonable, especially for loyal customers. My Mom and I could not be happier with the service we received. Not only did he maintain the lawn, which looks 1000% better I may add, but he also was able to clear out and haul away the underbrush that had taken over the backyard. I would recommend Hedgehog Landscaping to any household or business. Matt is very courteous and professional. If I can trust my Mom's lawn to this gentleman, so can you! -Carson Crawford

Wellington contacted me very quickly after my making a request to find tree removal services through Thumbtack. He came out to give us an estimate within 24 hours which was helpful because we were trying to gather information fairly quickly to figure out how we were going to get a big job done. His team did a great job and left our backyard clean and undamaged after taking down 5 large pine trees. I would definitely recommend them for tree removal services!

Gardening By Designs is great. They brought my grass back from nothing without us having to pull up grass or add sod. They also look at the whole picture, so when they saw the tree overhang was impeding our grass from growing, they took care of that as well. I highly recommend them. They are very knowledgeable and care about their clients.

I used Dave Hicks for many of my projects. He is a straight shooter that is not only interested in giving the customer what they want but offering options from his experience that would work better and cost less even if it means less of a profit for him. That, along with his very reasonable prices, is what impressed me and kept me coming back to him. From fall and spring clean-ups, fixing existing or adding new flower beds and borders and pond design to lawn maintenance, Dave has done an excellent job for me at a good price. I have recommended him to all of my friends.

Norman and his team are fabulous! They were timely, worked harder than most people, finished our project in 2 days, were the most knowledgeable team I've met about plants, trees, design, etc. They made our entire process of redoing our entire backyard into one of the easiest decisions we ever made! And, we now have a beautiful brick and paver patio to go with our color rich, gorgeous yard! Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
