I was skeptical at first using an app like thumbtack from my previous experience, but I am so glad to have gone with my gut on this one!! Floor Pro is the TRUTH!! Constant communication! Great and amazing customer service. Punctual!! Best products!! I could go on and on! Moving is never easy, but Floor Pro made it feel that way! They lifted such a huge weight off my shoulders! Because of the owners Larry and Virginia, and the technicians, Greg and Josh, I look to be a loyal customer. I will definitely be referring them to all my friends. Hardwood, carpet, tile and grout!! They did it all!! Thank you all for a job well done!!

The projects that being done were fixing the water damaged hardwood floor, install shades and curtain rods, replaced screen door, laying floor for attic space, and many small projects. D.J.'s service fee is very reasonable. He is smart and knowledgeable. He tried to find ways that can save money for me but was still able to finished the project perfectly. He is honest and responsible. He pays close attention to details on what he is doing. He was very patience in answering my questions. He showed me how to fix things if I wanted to do it myself. He is willing to work around my schedule, even means that he has to make multiple trips to my house for the projects. He is pleasant to work with. He has no problems changing things around with my requests even after he already completed the project. He helped me out many things that were not his job related. I Definitely will have him back again when I have more projects needed to be done.

Dimitry and his team have completed many jobs at our home. They built an incredible dog pin in our backyard for our large Old English Sheep Dog, replaced wood paneling on the front of the house, replaced and repaired screens on the screened in patio, pressure washed the entire home including front and back porches/decks, repaired children's wood play set - made it sturdier and safer, etc. Dimitry and his team have been early or on time to every meeting and job. Dimitry is easy to work with and has great ideas and knowledge. We are very pleased with his work and highly recommend him.

The experience we had with Max was a great one. We had close to 1500 sq foot of hardwood completely sanded and finished. At first we did not know what we wanted as far as color or finish. Max came to the house and laid different samples and gave us advise. It made our decision much easier. If we get floors refinished in the future, we will definitely let Max do it.

Arlan showed up right on time for our consult appointment. He was extremely professional and knowledgable about the products. He not only knew which type of flooring would be beautiful in my space, but which would be most appropriate and functional. I would highly recommend Floor Coverings International.

The experience that we had with Punchman was absolutely wonderful! They re-did two bathrooms, which included moving sinks, toilets, bathtubs and tile work. They also added a laundry room, laid hardwood floors and did some other little things. The thing that impressed us the most was there quality of work, their timeliness and the importance that they put on for meeting the deadline. We were originally told by another contractor that we would not be able to be in our house by Christmas due to bathroom issue, but Punchman came in and had us completely finished in about 2 weeks. They also called over the Thanksgiving holiday just to make sure everything was perfect. We would highly recommend Punchman for any home project and we will never question ourself again for who to use to work on our house.

My first time using Thumbtack and I hired William Powell to do some Handyman repairs. He was punctual, reliable, responsible, conscientious and courteous. His services included: removing a cement floor from an unused fireplace and replaced it with a laminate hardwood floor; replaced ceramic titles around face of fireplace; painted & varnished shelf for counter bar and several other shelves; and a table top and secured it to the base of my kitchen table; removed, demolished and disposed of free standing metal carport. I was exceptionally pleased with his service. He did an excellent job. I would absolutely hire him again. As a matter of fact, he will be installing 11+ double hung vinyl replacement windows at my home after the Holidays. Mrs. Ida Roberts

I hired Robert to install engineered hardwood in a room. He showed up when he said he would and did an excellent job. The new floor was higher so he cut and adjusted all the doors. He also did a good job of cleaning up when he was done - much better than most contractors I've hired. I hired him to come back and install a glass tile kitchen backsplash as well. He showed up on the day we had it scheduled, knocked it out and left the place looking great. His job quotes were very reasonable and I'm happy with the work he did.

Will Freeman and his company have done several jobs for us. They installed ceramic tile and back splash in our kitchen and did a wonderful job. He and his partner were very detail oriented and took the time needed to make sure the job was done right. We have had many comments on their work. Will also laid brick flooring on our patio creating a design that we love. Can't say enough about how hard he worked and what a great job he did.

They patched and refinished our hardwood floor and recarpeted out bedroom after some water damage occured. The results were very good. Their floor man did an excellent job measuring, cutting and numbering each piece of red oak during the install. The carpet was installed quickly and effectively. I am very satisfied with their work.

I'm very impressed and pleased with the services and extensive knowledge of all flooring aspects of Elite Flooring, a family owned and operated business run by The Fogles that is located in Columbia, SC. I originally ordered a Prefinished Oak Hardwood Floor for my kitchen to be installed by The Home Depot, they sent a crew if six to install my very expensive flooring that I had spent months saving for and when they said they were finished installing my flooring my base boards didn't meet my flooring, there were many nails threw the face of my brand new hardwood flooring and my kitchen floor didn't even meet the tile flooring in my dining room. I called The Home Depot and insisted they send someone to repair this crew's mistakes and after a week and numerous harassing phone calls to The Home Depot by myself and my family the finally sent Elite Flooring. Elite Flooring arrived to my house a week after the initial installation by the first crew they found my base boards didn't meet my flooring my hardwood flooring had many nails threw its face and my kitchen floor and dining room floor didn't meet and my brand new expensive flooring was already bucking in several places and I was beyond devasted. The first thing Elite Flooring did was aplozie to me and my family for something they had no part or cause in. After aplozing to us for something beyond their control and in no way invoking them they then went above and beyond to take time to explain first what caused all of this to start with and addressing all our concerns and questions, then they patiently explained to use every option for repairing the damage and preventing any further future damages. Elite flooring then patiently waited on us to discuss what option was best for us before they ever started the repairs to a mistake of another company never once rushing us. Elite Flooring turned a hoirrible experience with The Home Depot completely around for me and my family. Elite Flooring went out of there way to treat us like part of their family. Thank you Fogle family for repairing our floor without costing us to go into debt and treating us like part of your family the whole time and respecting us by sharing your knowledge but allowing us to make our own choices . I would highly recommend Elite Flooring to anyone who needs any flooring work or flooring repair done who wants professional coursetsy and service .

Mr. Smith did a wonderful job adding a door into my already built, door-less fence. The fence door looked exactly like the fence and seamlessly fit into the already built part. When my water heater in the attic broke and saturated my 2nd story ceiling and the ceiling fell out, he fixed that to perfection. You cannot even tell anything happened. Mr. Smith also built shelves for me in my garage to help with storage off the floor. He did this in only 1 day. They are very nice as well. Mr. Smith built my parents a walk-in tile shower from a tub. He had to do a complete tear-out and re-build from scratch. It is gorgeous. He built a seat in the walk-in shower as well. They are very pleased. Then they had him to do hardwood floors throughout their entire house. His fees are so reasonable, that they were able to get this done. Mr. Smith also had both of our roofs completely torn-down and redone with architectural shingles. We were able to upgrade our shingles due to his great pricing. Mr. Smith has done work for many of mine, and my parents friends as well. He is the only person we use.

I hired Ideal Remodeling last year to redo most of my downstairs flooring ( ceramic tile in kitchen, hallway, and bathroom) after major water damage. Naza did an amazing job ripping up my damaged vinyl floor and replacing it with ceramic tile He also replaced my hardwood floor that was damaged by water. I really liked the fact that Naza showed up everyday as promised and worked in a quick, efficient manner until the work was done I was so pleased with Ideal Remodeling's work and cost that I also hired them to tile my other two bathrooms and put a back splash in my kitchen I would highly recommend Naza and Ideal Remodeling to anyone who wants high quality floor and tile work at a good and competitive cost

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
