Hired on Thumbtack
Neal, upon initially meeting him, is an affable young man. Very polite and seemed quite knowledgeable. He actually showed for the initial meet (I say actually, because many don't), arranged on this site. I needed to get a shower pan replaced in a rental home. According to him, it was not going to be a simple job due to the age of the house and the method used to originally construct the shower. We agreed that he would go home and come up with a plan on how he best thought to proceed. He would then email me an invoice describing what would be done, how and how much. Over the next three weeks he never called me unless I called him first. He would always apologize for "dropping the ball" but never got back to me of his own volition. I finally got him to email me an invoice, but it would seem that he had already decided that he was not going to do the job as that was the last time I heard from him. This, even though I had already agreed to his price. This sort of behavior from private or general contractors seems to be endemic among them. I have only found one since I moved into my home 10 years ago that actually had the integrity to do what he says, when he said he would do it, keep the customer informed and do it right. The thought of having to hire one brings about the same angst that looking to engage a lawyer does. Sickening. I can visualize numerous reasons for this type of shady behavior but none of them make any economic sense when they are ducking sure jobs. I assume they must all be independently wealthy. I would have to recommend that you not engage this man and that Thumbtack stop representing him.
