Introduction: My name is Robert Álvarez, my friends call me Spoda, I’ve been a professional musician in Charleston since I was 15 and I’ve been teaching guitar and songwriting since 2008. I’ve studied guitar at Berkelee School of Music, Middle Tennessee State University, and Full Sail University. I’ve been an active full time musician in Charleston almost my whole life. Robert has been a great guitar teacher for my son. He has a positive, upbeat attitude and is extremely knowledgeable about music. He is patient and encouraging. My 15 year old son had tried guitar lessons before and was thinking about quitting because he was not progressing. Now he really looks forward to his guitar lessons because of Robert and has learned a lot quickly. I would highly recommend Robert.

Robert has great energy for working with kids. He is super passionate, encouraging and knowledgeable. My son has learned a lot of great techniques from him and is excited to learn to play the songs he’s been interested in learning. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I enjoy getting to know what kind of music people enjoy, so I often spend time listening to music with my students. I love teaching someone how to be an “active listener”.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I’ve studied guitar at Berkelee, Middle Tennessee State University, and Full Sail University.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I’ve been a musician my whole life. I started playing professionally when I was 15 by following in my fathers Bobby Alvarez’s footsteps. He is a fixture on the Charleston music scene and an inductee in the Lowcountry Musicians Hall of Fame. I started teaching in 2008 to share my love of music with anyone I can.
