Very helpful- installed a prefabricated outdoor safety (pet) gate that I had purchased, and wasn't sure I could figure out how to install myself. Indeed, it turned out the gate I was sent had some incorrectly drilled holes and needed some adjusting to fit into the space, and had tricky directions. Nevertheless he was able to get it all installed securely and efficiently. Easy to communicate with to schedule the service and brought all the tools/supplies needed.

Brent from Jack Of All Trades is great! He was able to work me in within one day and did a wonderful job power-washing over 2,000 square feet of driveway and a front porch. He takes pride in his work and is easy to work with. I also take comfort now in knowing I have someone I can call for not only power-washing but more since he has several home services (i.e. painting, etc.)

I highly recommend Absolute Luxury LLC for any residential or commercial cleaning needs. We have a home that needed a lot of cleaning to prep it for listing to sale. This included pressure washing the entire house, porch, walk way and driveway, carport, and worst of all, a wood fence that was so grey and green, it looked like their was no hope for it. We also needed a thorough cleaning of the interior too. Carlos met with me to review all the work that was needed. His professionalism, attention to detail, and full disclosure of everything was excellent. I had got a couple other quotes before meeting with Carlos and none compared to how Carlos took time to explain everything and the price we were easily able to agree on. Carlos was able to start on the exterior pressure wash within a day and complete it all within 2 days. We were amazed and completely satisfied with the job he did. The house, porch, driveway & walk way look wonderful and the wood fence looks practically brand new. Then Leslie came in to do the interior cleaning. Again, we are well pleased & happy with the thorough interior cleaning of everything. Our home has not looked this fabulous since it was bought 10 years ago. I am certain this has added value to our home and will definitely help with the sale of it. Thanks, Carlos & Leslie, for the outstanding job done. It was a true pleasure working with you. I look forward to working with Absolute Luxury LLC again with my real estate clients in the future.

Great experience, I have too large dogs and needed a way for the furry family members to go out through the garage to the backyard. Unfortunately the garage didn't have a door to the back yard. I would need a door and then a dog door installed in it. He was able to make the door look as though it had always been there. He even fixed the craftsman style door to look like it had been ordered specifically for the dog door. It was a great experience.

I needed a new French drain for my driveway and found AHS through the ThumbTack app. Allen was very quick to respond to my request on ThumbTack and came the following day to give me a quote. The AHS quote was very reasonable and their team completed the work quickly. Allen then came out to inspect the work and to make sure I was completely satisfied ... which I definitely was! I'll definitely use them again and HIGHLY recommend them.

Last spring, Nelson power washed and Sealed our front porch and front walkway and then he painted the trim on the front of our house. His estimate was the best that we received, and he did a very good job. Yesterday, Nelson installed 13 sets of blinds for me. They look great! Then he went back and checked each set to make sure they were working properly. We will definitely be calling back for any painting or handyman services we need done.

Zach and Cary are laid back competent jacks of all trades. Have used them for several projects from interior painting to barn repair, fence repair and new installation, to electric gate repair, to fixing pesky roof leaks, and more. They did painting and final prep for the saw of my late mom's condo-- it sold in just a couple of days for full price.

Just simply a class act from beginning to end. Michael and his employees were absolutely everything I could have asked for in a contractor, and the work that was done was top-notch. I had a list of tasks I needed done in my kitchen: a new dishwasher and garbage disposal installed, a stove top removed, a gas line installed, cabinets removed, new gas stove installed, a large section of wood floor repaired, and foyer with 20 ft. ceilings that needed repaired, retaped and painted. I was having a difficult time finding one contractor who was willing to tackle such a wide variety of tasks for a competitive price, and then through Thumbtack, I found Michael Jimenez, who gave me a great quote, was able to do the job in under a week, and the end result was just outstanding. Michael and his crew were punctual, polite, and efficient. Proper care was taken to protect my belongings and everything was returned to its original location upon completion. We have three dogs, which added to the confusion, but Michael and his staff were super good-natured about the pets, were careful not to leave gates or doors open, and worked around 3 very curious and nosy dogs without any issues. The completed project is perfect, my kitchen is exactly as I imagined it, and all thanks to M & M Coating. I encourage you to consider Michael and his team for any home improvement projects you've been considering, you will be glad you did. For an honest, experienced, competitively priced, efficient and professional contractor, look no further than Michael Jimenez and M & M Coating.

Brett helped install a privacy fence in the backyard of our last home. All of the neighbors commented on how good it looked, especially compared to the fences surrounding our property. A few of our neighbors had to do repair work on their own fence and replace gates due to craftsmanship, but we have had no issues with ours for 4 years so far. Still in great shape and the envy of everyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
