This is our second home so we have dealt with many contractors from every trade and this was by far the best experience we had. From the initial response to our thumbtack add to the end of the project they promt, proffesional, and friendly...not to mention our sidewalk turned out better then we imagined. We will definitely use them again.

David Binder can do it all -- construction, repairs, lighting, electrical, flooring, you name it. We hired David to install a new floor in our den, install new lighting fixtures and "under the counter" lighting in our kitchen, create a closet and install new exterior / interior wall covering where a window unity had been located. David did outstanding work in all areas. He is especially gifted with floor transitions from room to room and excels in his work. We were impressed with his thorough communication, reasonable costs, and attention to details. We will definitely have David come back for more projects in the near future. No doubt, he is the best handyman we have ever hired in our 27 years of home ownership!

This is a long overdue review. I initially contacted Bobby about doing a fence for us, but we discovered some other things that needed attention on our new house. Fortunately Bobby was able to help us out with those things as well. Bobby did the following for us: polyurethane coat on the hardwood, fridge and stove hookup, construction debris haul off, gutter guards, shingle replacement, replacing the damaged wood on our roof gables, and suspending water lines under the house (previously held up with electrical tape). Bobby did these things at a very reasonable price, he was always responsive, worked around our schedule (including working on weekends), and did great work. Probably the thing I appreciated the most was that Bobby doesn't take something on if he doesn't think he can do it very well. We had some water damage on our ceiling drywall that I asked Bobby to take care of. After cutting out the damaged drywall, he realized there were some issues with the ceiling joists that were going to make it much more challenging to get the drywall flush. Rather than just half-assing the job, Bobby let me know that it was a little outside of his skill set and recommended that I get a drywall pro to take care of it. In some of my other "handyman" experiences, I've had guys do more than they were really capable of, and end up doing a poor job. With Bobby, everything he did, he did extremely well, and when there was something he couldn't do, he was open and honest about it. Couldn't ask for more, and couldn't recommend more highly.

As a business owner in Hendersonville who works with youth programming I have the opportunity to enjoy conversations with customers from all areas of Sumner County. When conversations turn to the topic of construction or remodeling most people will share horror stories about how they call and the contractor who guarantees they will show up but never appears at the scheduled time. Worse is when they show up, walk out during lunch hour and never return to finish their work. If you are looking for a honest, dependable, straight forward person who can help you build or remodel your home or commercial business property then I highly recommend Mike Woerth. Mike is one of those "Jack of all Trades" type of guys who can tackle just about any project you throw his way. My wife and I have done business with Mike since 1996 both on homes we have added on to or remodeled, and our commercial building that has required an enormous amount of work since we opened. Mike is trustworthy and will go above and beyond the norm to insure that the job is well done. He has "come to the rescue" on several occasions where emergency repairs were required after hours or on the weekend whenothers were "unavailable". Mike is creative, thorough in detail, and takes pride in his craftsmanship. I highly recommend him to you for your next project!

Mac has done a number of projects for us and we have not had any issues with any of them. We are extremely happy with our floating deck. He removed old siding and rotted sheathing on chimney and bay window and replaced with Hardie Board. He also removed kitchen door and side window and replaced with a new door with window and doggy door. We will definitely use Mac for any other projects we need doing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
