I bought a gas oven from an online retailer and needed to find someone who would install it locally. Juan Ornelas bid on the job saying he needed more information, and then coordinated with me to find a time to look over the job. He made sure it would fit before I ordered the oven. Then he gave me a quote that was very reasonable--much less than what install.com would have charged. When the oven was delivered, Juan said he could be there the very next morning to install it. He brought another guy, and they had it hooked up in a short time. What helped me out a ton is that they did some carpentry to fill a hole in the floor that would have let vermin into the house. I know Sears or Lowes installers wouldn't have done that, and I would have had to find a carpenter. So all in all I was super pleased with Juan Ornelas and would recommend him highly. I now have a handyman for small jobs and will call on him again soon.

Jeff was awesome to work with. He was always on time, professional but yet easy going. He installed our walnut butcher block countertops and they look amazing! It was obvious from day one that he took pride in his work. Great craftmanship at a fair price and the integrity to finish the job well, oh and work on my house after terrible winter weather, Jeff Clark Custom Carpentry and Landscaping will be our carpenter in DFW any time. Thank you Jeff! Philip at North Richland Hills

From initial conversation to completion and cleanup, Ruben was the consummate professional. We interviewed 5 trim carpenters to install over 1500 square feet of ceiling shiplap. Not only was Ruben the most impressive interview and consult, he was also the low bid. Work commenced immediately was completed on time. Ruben was absolutely committed to give us everything we wanted and expected and he completely succeeded. And he and Shane were a delight. Very friendly and polite. We are already working with Ruben for our next project. Prospective customers are welcome to contact me: Neil. 972-489-8454

Braxton was very responsive from the start of my project and very detailed about what it would entail. He was able to fit me in very quickly and when there was an unanticipated problem with my faucet gave me guidance on which types would be the best to replace it with. Very knowledgeable and professional as well as having a breadth of expertise regarding many areas of repair and installation. Will be working with him again for future projects. Highly recommend.

His repairs exceeded our expectations. He was very thorough and professional. We're very satisfied with his work and will be contacting his company again should the need arise.

Paul Granado is the real deal! When I set out to do some repair work on a deck railing that had water damage, I was not expecting to get a TOP Notch CARPENTER... but I got just that! Very well spoken, very knowledgeable, very professional, has all the tools, non-smoker, and attention to detail. What a great experience. If you have a bad thing to say about your experience... I would find that hard to believe! I own a General Contracting company for 25 years in Dallas... I know what I know. This man is the Real Deal. Thx. Paul.

Bill Jones of Martin and Son Construction built an outstanding custom pergola for me. His detail work is far from ordinary. The stained cedar he used is beautiful and will last for many years to come. He was on time and kept me well informed on every aspect of construction. In spite of the daily rain that turned to extremely hot days, my pergola was completed in a timely manner. Bill delivers good quality work at competitive prices and is very dependable. My pergola is absolutely beautiful and I look forward to spending many enjoyable days using it. I will definitely call on him for any future projects. Bill is not just a carpenter, he is a true craftsman.

DHC was recommended to us by a granite contractor. We called Zachary Geringer, checked his website, were impressed with the pictures of his work and also learned one of our neighbors had used Zak's services to remodel her master bath. She gave him a 5 star recommendation, So we met and hired Zak to, first, remodel our guest bathroom and if we liked it, then we would consider including the master bath/dressing room and kitchen areas. We have lived in our home since 1981 and this was our first major renovation, so knew we needed someone who was experienced and flexible enough to handle unexpected structural challenges as well as providing us with new facilities with a definite "WOW" factor. Zak promised that he and Nate would be here on time every day, work diligently, clean up daily and stay on our job full time and continuously until finished to our satisfaction. And they did! Zak is a perfectionist and demands the same high standards of his sub-contractors: cabinetry, granite, tile and floor installers. The guest bathroom was completed first-rate and definitely sold us on continuing with MHM. In fact, we added all the other areas, plus the foyer, half-bath, breakfast and laundry rooms to the list. The new master bath includes one of the classiest new walk-in showers you will ever see. We weren't sure to what extent we wanted our kitchen remodeled. Zak suggested options and improvements, led us through our doubts and produced a beautiful result. Check the granite rainforest counter tops, back splashes and beautiful new custom-built cabinets in the picture section. Wow! Zak is an expert plumber, electrician and carpenter - he does it all! He rebuilt our substandard bath floors and walls before adding his touch for a gorgeous result. He removed a wall and raised a ceiling to open the kitchen. We are very pleased. Everyone involved in our project, which took more than three months, was professional and provided us top quality work. If you want a confident, proficient professional, call Zak and give him the opportunity to make you happy with your remodeling project.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

      Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

      How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
