I hired RD Hutton to provide small business accounting and tax preparation. Rex seemed very assuring on the phone, I have not ever met him in person. He set me up on a software that was much easier for me to understand than Quickbooks, which I really appreciate. I am a photographer, I am not an accountant! Using the software I was able to send all of my tax documents for him to do our business and personal income tax according to our contract. However, he did not complete our tax filing until April 14th, which left me with a lot of anxiety. This was my first year filing income from a personal business and I did not have any clue what I was going to have to pay until the evening before the tax filing deadline. I found this very unprofessional, given that I sent him all of my tax documents in February as I received them. I also did not get all of the forms from him, so when the IRS sent me a request for form 8962 having to do with the Affordable Care Act, (kind of a big deal since I am using the tax credit), I requested that from him. He responded that he didn't know why I needed this form, but he would try to get it to me by the end of the week. That was 3 weeks ago, and I have not received it. I have tried contacting him and I have not heard back. Every time I call I go straight to voice mail.
So, he started out good, but his customer service has deteriorated over the past couple of months. Additionally, the software he had me set up on was web based and I was locked out of my account for about 2 weeks, because apparently he failed to pay for the software even though I had paid him that month. I am concerned that if I break ties with him, I will lose access to this account and all of my accounting data. This makes me look unprofessional when I am unable to do invoicing and follow up with my clients about payments. In all I paid about $1200 during the course of the year, and I am now re-evaluating my options. I am also concerned that he is no longer advertising tax preparation but is now listed as a construction company.
