Rona provides a great service at a great price. She was even willing to come all the way to San Marcos! She was very professional and seemed very experienced and left me with a good idea of how to proceed with managing my fearful dog's anxiety and defensive aggression. I will definitely recommend Good Dog Training to anyone in the area interested in improving their dog's behavior.

Carrie was wonderful in caring for our small dogs and farm animals during our five day vacation. She sent pics and a message each day. Everyone was happy and healthy when we returned. We will definitely use her again when the need arises.

We had our 2 dogs (pit/lab mix & pit) go thru the board and train at Aloha. What a change it made in their behavior. No more bolting out the door or jumping on the couch and my favorite, no more jumping on the back door trying to get in without first waiting for the command. Kevin is very knowledgable about dog behavior and provided great feedback. Of course we will still need to continue to work with our dogs but without Kevin and the two week board & training we wouldn't be a far along as we are now. So very pleased we found Kevin and we will continue to use Aloha Canine for boarding when we take vacation. Beautiful facility - Kevin is the best... Karen & Dustie

I've had the pleasure of working with Christie both recently and over the last several years. She is an excellent trainer! She has saved many shelter dogs that would have otherwise had a very unhappy ending. She is professional, punctual, very knowledgeable about dog behavior, and her training program has wonderful results. I look forward to working with her for years to come! I would highly recommend her services if are looking for a trainer in general or if your dog has aggression issues.

We love Austin Dog Zone. I continue to be amazed by Laura and her willingness to educate. From the first time I asked for help to my ninety ninth question---she responded enthusiastically and quickly with a wealth of information. I have noticed a tremendous difference in my dogs behavior and health thanks to Laura's training and diet tips.

Samantha and Julie were great! We contacted Premier Pet TLC as the first on our list of possible sitters and we didn't have to look any further! From our first meet & greet, Samantha went out of her way to gain the trust of our loving fur babies. We had them come twice a day to walk our dog, change litter, and feed everybody, and stay overnight for 4 nights so our animals wouldn't get lonely. Samantha went above and beyond with our youngest cat, Toby, who has confidence issues. By the end of her stay, our normally very shy boy was coming out of his safe place to investigate and show her some love at dinner time. Their online portal is fantastic to use and makes it easy to schedule future visits. Through the portal, we were sent progress reports after each visit, which included photos and updates on how everybody was doing. We even got special Mother's Day greeting photos from each of our adorable pets! We loved Premier Pet TLC so much, that it was a joy to accept Samantha's offer for a behavioral session with Toby to help work on his kitty confidence, and we very much look forward to it. We will now always recommend Premier Pet TLC to anybody who asks, and if we could give an even higher rating we absolutely would. If you're looking for a caring sitter to take care of your pets while you're away, there is no better choice!

Just an FYI for anyone seriously considering htraining / boarding for their dog.... Jennifer came highly recommended to me by several people in my neighborhood/community when I desperately needed help with a foster Shepard that had aggression and other behavioral issues. Thank God I took their advice. I cannot speak highly enough about Jennifer as a person, let alone her ability to read, understand, and communicate with an animal. It’s truly a God given gift. I gave her virtually zero information about this dog, yet She spotted several behavioral tendencies within two minutes of meeting the dog that were scary accurate. I left him with her for 3 weeks and picked up a totally different dog. Unbelievable! Her ability (and patience) to train me how to reinforce it all may have been her hardest part of the training :) With Jennifer’s help, I actually ended up adopting the Shepard and he is the best dog I’ve ever had. He goes EVERYWHERE with me and is happy, balanced, confident and obedient. All signs of aggression, jumping, pulling, nipping, destructive behaviors, leash or barrier frustration; food aggression, and territoriaI issues were gone. GONE! I was afraid to walk him or let people greet him before. Now I have zero fear of his reaction in any situation. All he needed was guidance and structure from me to be comfortable and looks to me for direction rather than reacting on his own. I know I have a leash, somewhere... haven’t used it in so long I can’t remember where it is. Just thought people should know that there is a TRUE dog whisperer in our own back yard. I can speak of my experience, and name at least a dozen other families that have had the exact same experience and level of success with their dogs thanks to Jennifer - I love having the four legged companion I’ve always wanted and thanks to her talents, my dog is my best friend and biggest source of joy rather than a source of stress or worry. THANK YOU AGAIN!!

Good job to Amy!! She's been running my dogs off and on for the past 8 months and I love the fact that I don't have to worry about them while at work, or if I take a short vacation out of town. Boxer and Tina get plenty of exercise when I'm away -- twice a day! It's that time of the year for me -- VERY busy -- and it's one less thing that I have to worry about if I'm on a business trip. I also have Amy come over to walk them around the noon hour so they're not inside for 9-10 hrs while at work. The best thing is that both Boxer and Tina seem to be more relaxed when I come home from work. They're behaving much better in the apartment and when I take them on walks! It's a win-win with less stress on them, and me!! Amy is GREAT with both of my dogs and really cares about the well being of animals in general! If you're in need of pet services -- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AMY'S JOGGIN DOGS!!

I found Julie while I was exploring the variety of things (shows, events, competitions) my dog could experience. I was referred to her for instruction in what is called Nosework (a fun search and scenting activity). Through this experience Julie has introduced me to methods of training that have developed my relationship with my dog I didn’t know was possible. Buddy (my 70 lb rescued mutt) and I are growing every day in our understanding of each other. I can better understand his behavior cues and He understands what I’m asking of Him.

Upon the first meeting with Hilary, I felt that she had a really great attitude and willingness to do whatever it took to make my dog feel comfortable. Super Big Plus...She was able to start right away, which took a lot of stress off of my mind. She's also very easy to work with for any adjustments to the daily/weekly walking schedule. I have a lot of gratitude for her choice to work with animals and it gives me peace of mind, that she knows her stuff.

        Animal Trainer

        New To Thumbtack

          About

All through my life, I wanted to train animals and help others train their pets. It always seemed as a great way to see your hard work and time pay off. I have always liked that with proper training, the right behaviors will come out in animals, whether they are good or bad. I want to extend out to others to show them the different ways and techniques on how to handle, from a misbehaving dog to a temperamental horse. I'm here to help you exceed that goal on giving Fido another chance.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

          • What type of training methods do you use?
          • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
          • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
