TO THE STUDENT The American Accent Program aims to assist ESL speakers in mastering the clear, confident, and natural pronunciation of American English. It emphasizes not only sounds but also developing a new speech identity that enables you to speak with confidence, clarity, and emotion. The program consists of THREE MODULES: AMERICAN SOUND SYSTEM CURRICULUM It is divided into three main modules: American Consonants, American Vowels, and American Intonation. MODULE ONE: American Consonants: Sound-by-Sound ♻️ YOU CAN Understand how to accurately pronounce American consonants, distinguishing the subtle yet significant differences from your native sounds. For example: [T] vs. [D] → “ten” vs. “den” [TR] vs. [WR] → “train” vs. “rain” You will also learn connected speech features such as Elision (dropping sounds), Reductions, and Assimilations to make your English sound natural and fast. 👉 Drill Example: Repeat aloud, first slowly, then faster: “ten–den, ten–den, ten–den” “train–rain, train–rain, train–rain” ♻️ YOU CAN Develop a habitual speaking manner for each consonant through phonetic exercises, training at the beginning, middle, and end of words to master every position. 👉 Drill Example: [P]: “pat – happy – stop” [G]: “go – bigger – bag” ♻️ YOU CAN Practice speaking American English in sentences and paragraphs to sharpen your ear and mouth, helping you detect and correct errors. 👉 Drill Example: “Peter picked a perfect pear.” (focus on [P]) “Dogs dig deep during dinner.” (focus on [D]/[G]) ♻️ YOU CAN Organize all American consonants in your mind. MODULE TWO: American Vowels: Sound-by-Sound ♻️ YOU CAN Identify the most confusing American vowels, which can drastically change meanings. For example: CALLER – COLOR – COLLAR SIT – SET – SAD Using 2D Sound Motion Technology, you'll see tongue and lip positions for each vowel in action. 👉 Drill Example: “Sit – set – sat – sad – sod – saw – sue.” Say these slowly, then faster, ensuring each vowel remains clear and distinct. ♻️ YOU CAN Establish a natural way of speaking American vowels through phonetic exercises at the start, middle, and end of words. 👉 Drill Example: [æ]: “cat – matter – back” [ʌ]: “cup – under – luck” ♻️ YOU CAN Practice vowels within sentences and paragraphs to build natural speech flow and fluency. 👉 Drill Example: “The man had a map in his hand.” (focus on [æ]) “Look at the book you took.” (focus on [ʊ]) ♻️ YOU CAN Organize vowel sounds mentally, train your ear to recognize mistakes, and improve steadily.
