We had 2 elderly large dogs a few years ago who dug out against our foundation for shade and cooling from the Houston sun. They have since passed, but we hadn't fixed the area yet. Then Harvey came along and invaded our house in that same area. I posted the project and almost immediately got a text from Lance, the owner. He came out a day or so later and gave me a great quote and detailed how he would help us mitigate the drainage issue so we wouldn't have this problem again. Well, they just finished the job in about an hour and it looks pristine. Two new drain catch boxes and new drain line extensions with the thick turf replaced as if it had never been moved. They graded the area so that now water goes down the drain instead of in our home. All we need to do is water the area so that the grass can take hold and when we have the gutters reinstalled (after we have the roof replaced next month), we'll tie into the new drain line and be safe from flooding again. I highly recommend Lance and his crew! He does reasonably priced lawn work as well, so keep him in mind for that. He's coming out again later to help us get rid of some trash trees the squirrels planted for us and clear out the poison oak that is taking over our front "garden".

Alfredo Lunar and his crew with Heaven on Earth gave me my little piece of Heaven back!! My large yard was a jungle of weeds and overgrowth of the previous owner's many flower beds after several years of little attention. The previous owner also left a mess of a "potting bench" of sorts with many broken pots and etc and an area with a lot of other gardening supplies, borders and rolls of something like chicken wire, etc. There were some of these items which I wanted salvaged, but most trashed, and the same with clearing of the beds....keep some plants. It is definitely harder to work under those circumstances than to just do a 100% clear out and not worry, but they were the most conscientious crew I have ever hired! They were continually asking for clarification to ensure nothing was pulled which I wanted to keep. Alfredo continuously asked if I was happy and they all happily complied with anything I asked. They also laid a walkway for me on the side of my house which was previously always a mud pit where I was also attacked from above with vines growing on the fence. I coukdnt get out of my gate to fet to my faucet!! I love my new path!! Alfredo is also a very knowledgeable tree trimmer. He helped open my canopy up to more sunlight while leaving plenty of shade. He was very knowledgeable on the entire job, taking what I said I wanted and making recommendations on how to best accomplish that. Oh, and all that is done with liability insurance in case something goes wrong and workman's comp in case his employees get hurt!! I will hire Heaven on Earth again, and I recommend you do as well!!

My yard was a desolate desert before Joe laid his magic hands on it and turned it into what I consider comparable to the Chateau de Versailles garden. (ok, maybe not as big or grand, but it is perfectly manicured.) What was crispy brown hay is now flourishing green grass. April showers and Joe brought blooming flowers. Joe is hardworking, has a great sense of humor and a wealth of gardening knowledge. I use his services regularly for maintenance, because this lady here(me) has the touch of death. Or maybe I'm just lazy... but thanks Joe!

This is the second time I have hired Jeffrey to do work at my business. This time, he was busy during the week that I asked him to come and so he offered to come out on a Sunday in order to fit us into the schedule, which I very much appreciated.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
