This was my first hire through Thumbtack, and I was quite pleased. Gary was polite, responsive, and professional. He gave me a fair quote for a sink and faucet install. My new sink did not fit into the existing cut-out, so I had to have another contractor come out to adjust the size. Gary was able to come back out to my house immediately the next day to complete the installation.

I had a side garage door installed and I was extremely pleased with the results! Not only was it installed perfectly, but he also painted it too. I would have had to paint the door myself if I had chosen another contractor. He also put on the locks. The quality of work was outstanding and the price was great too!

The overhead sheetrock repair was going to be a very challenging and messy job, cleaning up after another's demo error. Geovanny was on time for the estimate and for the actual job. Not only did he and his associate totally " tent " the area with plastic ( to contain as much of the white dust as possible), but then at the end of the job they cleaned up the area. Actually after sanding, patching and repainting the ceiling....the kitchen was cleaner than when they began! Geovanny was the only contractor who came to estimate, that actually got onto the counter to tap all around the ceiling to try and research the project. He is a very upbeat and reassuring man, patient with my anxiety and quite proficient at his craft. He was priced very fairly and It is strange.... not only would I recommend him ....since he seems to be able to do many different remodel tasks, I am looking for other projects that he may be able to complete in my condo.

Daniel fixed my 1950's GM Refrigidaire refrigerator when most other maintenance contractors wouldn't even give it a look over. Fair price, honest guy, and trustworthy. Will definitely call back when needed again.

Melky and his team stuck with my problem until they solved it. I was honestly afraid I was going to have to jackhammer up 100 square feet of concrete to get to a sewer line...but they found a way around it and solved the problem of my 80+ year old sewer lines.

David was prompt, professional, quality work, and most of all reasonably affordable. I hired him for my door after hiring another contractor who was useless, no help, and unskilled. This company is experienced. He started off with repairing my door frame and we ended up hiring him for other jobs in my home. He is now our staple handy man. Great work good man!

The crew showed up when they said they would and the job took 2 days on an estimated "2-3 days". They did not leave until it was done. I am not a professional plumber, but I have a considerable experience doing my own personal plumbing, including adding a full bath to my home in Temple, Tx (passing all inspections). The price quote was also considerably lower than the other two contractors I contacted! I would recommend Shorty without reservation. Well done, Shorty!

We moved into our new house and 3 days later we had lightening strike our house. We had most of our electronic devices affected. Safe Water Services came out promptly when I contacted them. They quickly diagnosed and replaced the controller. They also took time to educate me on its operation and make several minor repairs (at no additional cost). We appreciate the quick, polite helpful service they provided.

After 6 bids (including 2 excellent plumbers on Thumbtack) for my nightmare 200' sewer line I chose David. The job required digging the trench between a forest of trees and searching for the city's ancient sewer line. It rained. It poured. David was out there in the rain shoveling with 2 helpers carefully covering up the new line so it wouldn't float. Then the tub filled up. Another ancient broken pipe. So he dug under the tub by hand so as not to destroy the bathroom, found the 1940 broken pipe, fixed it and Somehow spotlessly cleaned up the 4' high pile of mud before my renter came home. Then the city suggested fixing the 1940 gas line. Then it flooded again. Then the city's line leaked. All was nasty and somehow he persevered. Everything is inspected and working at last and his bid was very reasonable.

Little Jon’s plumbing are my hero’s! Working long into the night for two nights Jon would not give up on finding the problem with my plumbing. It turned out that a subcontractor doing work next door had fractured my sewer line and hidden the damage. Jon helped me to provide the information necessary to get the subcontractor to own and repair the line. I really don’t know what I would have done without Jon’s expertise. His prices were competitive and he offered flexible evening hours. I cannot recommend this plumber enough. Truly the best!

Had a contractor start on a job that was postponed by the contractor twice after it was started, got rid of him. Called Zach and he started right away, fixed some issues that were left behind from the same guy. I am having him do another job.

We wanted to replace an existing bathtub with a shower but the drain didn't line up so we had to call a professional. The plumbing in our old house was old and some not up to building codes. We hired Kenneth with AAM & Associates to install the shower. He had to re-route the drain, relocate the supply lines, locate the sewer drain and install a clean out AND he created an entire full bath for us that we didn't think we could afford until we saw the quote Kenneth gave us for the work. We LOVE our new bathroom--even the pipes behind the walls look great. Kenneth is a real professional. I would recommend him to anyone in need of plumbing repairs or a bath or kitchen renovation or new install. He's a really nice guy too.

My experience with Reza was the best experience I have ever had with any contractor! When I hired Reza we were in the process of preparing our house to sell. We had a long list of items that needed to be done, and were on a tight timeframe to hit our planned listing date. Not only did Reza complete everything on the list and exceed my expectations in terms of quality, communication and cleanliness, but he also identified and resolved several issues with our house that we hadn't previously discussed. Even though he went above and beyond the scope of our agreement, he still honored the original quote without hesitation and completed all of the tasks on time. The best part of working with Reza is how genuine and trustworthy he is. He took a genuine interest in ensuring our house was ready to sell and took ownership of the work because he cares about his customers. I'm disappointed that I'm moving out of the area because I finally found a contractor I can trust to do work that meets and exceeds my standards. If I ever own property in this area again, I will definitely hire Reza for all of my handyman and painting needs!

Rios was very professional from start to finish. Our bathtub overflowed and he showed us all the areas the water went with his thermal tool. Other contractors didn't even go to the room's Rios showed us. He took care of the problem immediately and he was able to work with our budget. I definitely would recommend RR Emergency Services.

I can not state enough how excellent the service was from this company. I was choosing between three contractors, and this company was very responsive, fairly priced and able to start the job within a couple hours after being selected. Above all, the quality of the work was great.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
