I'm very pleased to have met Mike. Mike arrived promptly and prior to beginning the project explained, in detail, the steps he would be taking to complete the project. Mike's professionalism and knowledge was on display as he answered all questions I had regarding the project. In addition, he also answered general questions I had about other projects I'll be conducting in the near future. He was honest and personable. From a professional perspective, Mike's attention to detail was excellent. Throughout the project and upon completion, Mike was a pleasure to be around and talk to.

I was contact by Marcial from Medina Construction & Roofing and two other contractors within 10 minutes after I posted on Thumbtack that I needed a Reroof on my house, the next day he did an inspection on my roof and provided me with a detail estimate for the job and included reference from BBB and Thumbtack, plus a certificate of liability insurance. After reading some reviews and getting two other estimates, I decided to go with Medina Const. for the best price. The job was schedule whitin one week and the work was done in a full day and a half on the entire roof. Marcial is the "man" he is hands on with his crew, he actually is part of the crew, clean job from start to finish, no problem adding extra work for the terrace, and upgrading to 30 year shingle. I would definitely recommend Medina Const. for any roofing project.

My roof suffered some hail damage last year and after filing a claim with my insurance company, I started searching for reputable roofers/general contractors. I reached out with my inquiry on Thumbtack and Matt Snow was one of 5 contractors that reached out to me promptly. Of the contractors I met with, Matt quickly made it to the top of my list. His courteousness, professionalism and reasonable estimate gave me just the confidence I needed to make my decision on which contractor to work with. Not knowing much of anything about roofing, it was a bit daunting to choose a contractor in the first place but Matt kept things simple. Not only did he provide a free inspection/estimate but sat down with me and reviewed the insurance claim, answering any questions/concerns I had. He also walked me through anything I didn't understand about the claim and at no time made me feel obligated to his business. The deadline for my claim was just a few weeks away and I was very concerned about the amount of work and time it would take for my roof to be completed and for my claim deadline to be met. Matt understood my sense of urgency and communicated his availability to me as well as providing me an accurate detail of how long it would take for the work to be completed. On the day of the job, his fellow contractors (he works with a team of two others) showed up promptly at 7:30 a.m. and started the work. I dealt with Matt directly, from start to finish of the project, and I appreciated there being no confusion or need to repeat myself to anyone else. I was charged for the roof after work on it had been started and Matt checked in a couple times throughout the day (it was a one day job) to keep me posted. Matt and his team are very reliable in my experience and wholly professional. Professionalism with courtesy go a long way in my book and Matt definitely defines that. This is an honest, transparent (reasonable rates and itemized invoice) and hard-working business that definitely wants to earn their customer's loyalty as much as their monetary business. My roof was a small job that didn't require a lot of hands but Matt and his team of two worked around the clock and delivered. I could hear them on the roof for the duration of the work and have no doubt as to how dedicated they are to getting the job done and done well! I also got the impression that no job is too big or too small to have Matt's full attention and dedication. Matt will work with your time, budget, claim and concerns. I highly recommend City Wide General Contracting and can't say enough great things about Matt and his team. This is a lengthy review but I wanted to cover all the bases of what I look for when hiring an individual/business. I am a first time homeowner and had no personal/direct experience with property damage and insurance claims prior to this. Matt put my mind at ease and made this process a bit more pain-free. I hope this review will be very helpful to anyone who is like me and wants to ease some of the stress that goes along with seeking reliable, reputable and courteous businesses. If you need roof repair or any General Contracting work, definitely consult with Matt Snow and City Wide General Contracting.

Jesus came out to update our developer office from the bright (and frankly ugly) green paint that it had. He replied promptly, checked the space, and scheduled a time all within 48hours of putting in the request online. He and his crew were back out within 2 days and knocked it out of the park! The space looks great and my dev team has never been happier! Super friendly, super fast, and great results! Plus they have general contract crews and cleaning crews. Really a one-stop-shop! Will definitely be using JD again!

My husband and I are very pleased with the work that Chong and his workers completed today. Not only did he give the best quote we could not ask for a more professional contractor! From the day he showed up to give an estimate till the day the project was complete he was on time every morning and worked through the day with his team. His workers were very polite and made sure everything was picked up the last day. I highly recommend Chong and already asked him to come back to do more work.

Fernando removed and braced a load bearing wall in my home, tiled kitchen floor, installed new drywall, repaired/textured ceiling, added recessed lighting, etc. Fernando takes pride in his work. He is professional, efficient, clean, and capable of any type of construction job. I haven't been this impressed with a contractor in a very long time and plan to use him for future projects.

Said does excellent work! From day 1 we could tell that he was a true professional. He came in & performed a wall tear out kitchen remodel building a beautiful Archway to replace the old doorway. This project consisted of plumbing, Sheetrock, texturing, electrical, general construction and cabinetry. Said was extremely clean, courteous and honest. He is a perfectionist when it comes to his work. His precision planning and detailed construction produced beautiful results, thus we are extremely pleased with his craftsmanship. Will definitely be working with Said again. Don’t wast your time looking elsewhere, this man can do it all and do it well!

Their design and choosing of the plants was outstanding that matched the location and accentuated the house. They allowed us to choose the plants with them at the nursery. They designed everything on paper first and then allowed us to make changes so we could see what it looked like before proceeding. They worked well with our other contractors and actually managed the whole project. Jeff was there supervising all activities and installation. Very refreshing. They met all their commitments and schedule and the follow-up was outstanding. Their work and design makes you say wow! Very personal service in working and coordinating with the owners. Would HIGHLY recommend them. We will use them again for our back yard project around our pool. Love their work!

All of the work was done with excellent professionalism. All of the unforseen things that come with a remodel, were easily handled by Mitchell, my contractor. Plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, tile...Im not sure there's anything he can't get put together. I am extremely happy with the job, and I get a million compliments. I have, and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks.

Top quality job, completely professional crew, trustworthy and fairly priced. I would suggest getting bids from other contractors and then calling Raul. Not only will he give you a better price, but he will deliver. He and his crew completely transformed three different buildings for us on our horse ranch. They also worked through conditions that most people would not even consider working in.

He was well organized and had an excellent bevy of contractors experienced in a variety of professions ranging from electrician, sheetrock, painting, carpentry, concrete work and so on. He and his contractors provided an excellent return on our considerable monetary investment in renovating our home! My wife and I highly recommend Will and Zion Home and Building!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

This is a small bathroom that is 5 ft x 6 ft and includes a toilet and bathtub. The bathtub takes up 60 in x 48 in of the space. The house is built in 1978 and most of the fixtures are original to the house. Things that need to be done: install a ventilation system (there is a heat lamp that has wiring which can be potentially converted for a vent), new dry wall/greenboard for the walls, new tiles for the floor (currently vinyl?), new tiles and cement board for shower, new toilet, possibly new shower sliding door, and update shower fixtures. I think the bathtub is still in pretty good shape so I want to keep it if possible. There might be possible leakage through the shower tiles behind the walls (not from the pipes but from water leakage through the grout). IF there is, what is the worst case scenario and how much would that cost to fix? If I do a lot of the demo myself, how much will that save me?
