My name is Benji Tompkins and I am a certified dog behaviorist. I grew up in Colorado and now live in Arlington. Training dogs has been a major part if my life ever since I could walk, whether it was our family dog, or the neighbors.
After college I worked in restaurants and bounced around the corporate world for many years but my love for dogs and people always has been at the heart of who I am. My approach to training has always been more about helping the humans as the care givers learn the leadership skills to teach their own dogs. If I train your dog and hand them back to you without giving you the skills to train and maintain you're own dog then I have failed as a trainer. I don't focus soley on sit, down, come, stay, heel. I teach humans how to communicate with their dogs so they can build a relationship that's founded on trust, respect, and love!
I do my best to listen to my clients concerns and help bridge the gap between them and their dogs. As a dog dad myself I understand how important your 4 legged kids are to you and I will treat every client as if they were my own dog.

When Benji came in he was very professional and addressed our issues right away. He listened and gave ideas without hesitation. Prices he quoted were spot on with other trainers. I just got a very good vibe from him compared to speaking to other trainers. Huskies are wound up tight and need appropriate handling. We have found a diamond in him.

This was only our first meeting with Benji and my perception is that this is going to be an excellent experience all around. He is knowledgeable and friendly, and made an immediate impact on how we relate to our dog. Benji has been amazing! He truly knows what he's doing and enjoys what he does. Very great at teaching the humans how to effectively build a bond and train. From day one he's been amazing. Saw results after the first visit and it's just gotten better and better. I'm SO glad that I chose him to help me and my family get the best out of our puppy! My husband and I had been fostering through a rescue for a year and the day finally came that we foster failed and decided to adopt our foster dog. After we adopted him we noticed some behavioral issues that we weren't sure how to address ourselves (leash reactivity, chewing remotes when we weren't home, barking/growling at other dogs, etc.) and quickly got overwhelmed with all the information online. I decided to look start looking for a trainer, but specifically wanted to go through an individual trainer rather than a dogtraining business. I am so glad I found Benji on Thumbtack! Prior to our first session Benji scheduled a complimentary Zoom call for almost an hour to get a better understanding of what we were struggling with and what we wanted to achieve. He was also transparent about his pricing structure/lesson packages. He said after our first session he would recommend if he thought we needed 6 or 10 lessons. We have 2 dogs, an 11 year old Australian Shepherd and 2 year old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd. Benji also has a Border Collie mix so he understands herding breeds very well and what they need to be fulfilled/satisfied.
Our first lesson Benji met us at our house and met our 2 dogs. At the end of the lesson he suggested 6 total lessons and recommended we get a treadmill for the dog we had just adopted. Throughout the 6 lessons Benji worked with us on a variety of issues:
- not reacting to the doorbell
- place command
- training our younger dog on the treadmill (we are up to 2 hour long sessions a day!)
- not pulling on the leash
- leash reactivity
- eating slowly/calmly (this is something we didn't even know was a problem that Benji was able to identify with our older dog and it has made such a difference!)
The lessons are very customizable as well. Benji brought his dog to a lesson one day to help with leash reactivity and he met us at a coffee shop patio one lesson to work on helping our dogs be more calm in public settings. I truly cannot say enough positive things about our time working with Benji! We feel better equipped with understanding our dogs and ensuring they're fulfilled. It has made such a difference! We have also texted Benji outside of lessons to provide updates/ask questions if we need extra support. We will definitely reach out to Benji in the future for any questions/additional lessons!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We start off with a free virtual consultation to go over what training with me will be like. Then we set up a first lesson and after the initial lesson we will set up if they want a package deal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a certified dog behaviorist. I have taken courses in ethology from animal behavior college. I have studied under many great behaviorists such as Brad Bevill and Robbie Estille.
