Meeting someone for the first time and hiring them to do one of the important things for the place you are going to live for the next couple of years/decades can be daunting task. I was on the same boat couple of weeks ago. Frank did have all the parameters i needed for the person i wanted to hire to install my engineered hardwood floors for ~ 2500 sqft. Biggest + i find is he imagines himself to be living in the home rather than treating it a customers house and added advantages are being professional, knowledgeable No one can be perfect, frank and his crew are no exception but the difference lies when you want to correct it before the customer says or after the argument. I only had to direct him to the location and he would take care it for me. Next time hire : Yes Recommend to someone: Yes Affordable: Yes Chances of improvement: Yes All in all happy and I might have found a trustable contact in a domain that i have never dealt before.

I had ceramic floors installed in my kitchen, office and master bathroom as well as hardwood floors installed with new baseboards everywhere else in my home. Not only were they very professional but any and all questions were quickly and promptly addressed beyond my satisfaction. When this job was completed I was amazed at how good it turned out considering how it looked while they were doing it. Robert thank you for a job well done and I give MP the highest recommendation for any job deals with floors or carpet. I definitely would recommend this company!

Aisha and her team were simply amazing. She listened intently to my needs and executed a project that exceeded my expectations. What I love about her is that she's highly-creative but also very budget-sensitive (which is extremely important in the design process). Also, she puts her "all" into her work which shows up in the end result. I'd hire her again in a heartbeat and I've already recommended her to others!

Floor Coverings International installed engineered hardwood in a hallway and four bedrooms. They did an awesome job. John went above and beyond to match the existing floors that were in the living areas. He also does more than sell you flooring. He supervises the install from beginning to end and cares about every detail.

Overall, this was a really good experience. The result of the refinishing is fantastic, and the price was fair and in line with other vendors. The owner Rick and his team worked quickly and efficiently. After coming out to give the estimate, he was actually ready to get started the next day. We had some other work that had to be finished first, and when we suggested a date a few days out, he was able to accommodate that without hesitation. It took less than a day for everything to be completed in about a 500 sq ft space. This was much faster than I expected. When I told Rick that, he replied this is what his team does. They only work on wood floors, so they are some of the best at it. The only thing that keeps this from a 5-star rating is communication. We don’t speak Spanish. The work team didn’t speak English. As a result, it was frustrating on the morning they came to do the job. We weren’t able to give the team clear directions on where to park. We live in a condo complex, so it’s not as simple as “on the street in front of the house.” Once inside, we had to hope they clearly understood what needed to be done, including some floor repairs. This really is the only negative thing I can say about the experience. Ultimately, we are very pleased with the end product and definitely recommend Venetian Hardwood Floors for your project.

I loved working with this company. The website is super easy to use and the favorite option makes sorting through the seeming endless samples much more manageable. After making my way through all the hardwood floor samples, I had all my favorites together so I could choose between them. It was fantastic! Then, when I went in the store to actually see my top 5, the staff stepped up to the plate and helped me understand not only the subtle color diferences, but the quality differences in my choices as well. They were so friendly and knowledgeable, I would recommended them to anyone looking for new floors. They made the process simple and stress free.

Longhorn floors did an excellent job on my floors. Juan met me at my requested time for an estimate and I didn't even give him a 12 hour notice. He was very professional. I was in a bit of a time crunch and they were able to get the job done in 2 days. I had hardwood put in two bedrooms and closets. It looks great!!! They were able to match the existing hardwood almost perfectly. I definitely recommend Juan and his team to anyone looking to get hardwood put in. Couldn't have had a better experience.

This was our first experience with hiring someone through Thumbtack and we were a bit apprehensive. And, admittedly, things didn’t get off to a smooth start. Luis came to the house to get the scope of the job and bid it. We walked him through everything we wanted and the original online bid doubled. That is why we understand that online bids are all but useless. Until a contractor sees the job, they should not bid it! We were told that it was a two day job, but when the worker arrived (Luis didn’t show up) he tried to cram it all in to one day. That made us more nervous, but as he got rolling, he realized that it would take two days as Luis had said. Then, after the worker was done for the first day, we walked the job. There was paint spill on the hardwood floors and one of the patch jobs looked like someone stuck bubble gum on the wall and painted over it. There was also a divot in one of the walls caused by a drawer shutting on it and pulling out the paint when it was opened. Later, Luis admitted that he had done that when he checked the work. I would have thought he’d have fixed it. We let Luis know of these things that needed fixing and he agreed that on day two, they’d be handled. When the workers came back on day two, they were a little late. But they showed up on a Sunday as promised so they get extra credit for that. Day 2 required repairs to door hinges that another contractor had “fixed” and the “fixed” again. But the guys from Tyler’s did it right. They pulled the door frame apart, reinforced the wood, and reassembled the whole thing. By the end of the work the door swings like it was new and you’d never know that it had been repaired. It looked great. After the guys left I found myself cleaning up a little paint and some door handles and a counter top. It sounds like there were problems, but the reality is that, as someone who hires contractors for a living, there’s no perfect contractor. There’s always a “punch list” of things that need to be fixed or finished. I’m handy enough to do some of the final cleanup on my own and it’s easier to do it than to schedule the contractor to come back. I give these guys Four Stars because the work has all been done very well. The workers didn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. They aren’t lazy like others I have seen and there was no argument about touching things up. I don’t get hung up on the original online bid being lower than the final bid, because I didn’t supply photos or dimensions when I submitted my request for bids. We will be calling these guys again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
