About
My goal is to get your piano's maintenance started in the right direction. For $110, you get a basic tuning done with the utmost care and consideration. I will gladly take a look at and fix any other minor issues while I am there. I will never charge more for the service call unless we discuss the work ahead of time and you decide it is something you need. As a musician, I know what a difference it makes to be able to practice on an instrument that is properly tuned and maintained. It might make the difference between playing for 5 minutes or being engrossed for hours! I tune exclusively by ear and do not use an electronic tuning device. Even though it takes more time, I believe it is more accurate and improves the quality of a tuning. I also find great joy and satisfaction in listening to all the things that go into tuning a piano. I love meeting people from all walks of life and I hope we will get to meet someday. If you choose me, rest assured you will be my absolute priority and I will do everything I can to meet your needs. Samson tuned my old upright piano and did a fantastic job! It is such a joy to play now, it sounds great and I can't stop playing it!. He took the time to meticulously tune the piano and make sure every note sounded perfect. He even fixed the sustain pedals which were not working correctly.

We were pleased to meet Samson. He executed great skill with tuning our piano- showing infinite patience with tuning each key. He even took a broken pedal and broken key home to get the correct parts and will return to replace them.

Samson was very professional and courteous. Our piano had been in a basement for years and was badly out of tune. It now sounds great! I would definitely recommend him and will use him myself going forward to keep our piano in good shape.

Samson was fantastic. He was on time. My piano hadn't been tuned in 3+ years and had some sticking keys. He fixed the keys and my piano sounds beautiful. I would recommend him highly.

Mr. Mengsteab was exactly on time, very personable and knowledgable. He was encouraging regarding the quality of our instrument and its ability to respond to tuning and repairs, even though I have neglected maintenance for more years than I wish to admit. He spent over 2 and a half hours working to raise the pitch and tune. The piano, honestly, has never sounded better! I will definitely hire Mr. Mengsteab as my regular piano tuner and technician. He is talented and a pleasure to work with, and is clearly passionate about the instrument. Thanks again!!!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I work within certain parameters. My top concern is the client's interest in having the work properly done because they enjoy playing the piano and like to hear and feel the results when its maintained. I also try to stay competitive with fellow technicians in the area because working at a cost makes it harder for everyone to ask for fair prices.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I try to assess the condition of the piano, how often it's been tuned, and if it needs any repair work over the phone or through email. Then I give an estimate on how much work the piano needs and my cost including travel. Once I'm at the client's home or studio I can get a more accurate picture of what the piano needs, take notes for future reference, and do the scheduled work (regular piano tuning, pitch raise, or repair work). After I will share with the client what kind of other work the piano might need and give the client options on how to proceed in the future, hopefully working out something reasonable in order to maintain a relationship with the client and the piano.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I apprenticed intermittently for 4 years at Berklee College of Music ~2010 at the Piano Technology Department. I'm most comfortable doing basic tunings and pitch raises. I can handle minor repairs, such as stuck keys, unresponsive pedals, or broken strings. I am not a full technician and will not do a full regulation. Even still some repairs may be large enough that I need to transport parts, or in some cases, the whole action to a piano shop and do the repairs with an experience technician's supervision and/or advice. Or I may be able to refer you to a friend.
