Joe was the photographer for our Barksdale Elementary graduation. Joe did an outstanding job! He was prompt, professional and took exceptional images of the event. All the requirements of the job were met as requested. Joe exceeded our expectations with his attention to detail and the quality of the images. I would definitely hire Joe again to photograph our event.

Nazim took photos for a surprise wedding proposal with my fiance and I. He was great. I had him sort of hide because I didn't want to tip her off. He was really professional. Not sure that all photographers would do that. I would definitely use him again.

Tyrone Turner is the real deal. He knew what I needed before I did. Literally. I wanted to make a music video that looked as professional as possible but on a working man's budget. He was fully prepared with all the right equipment. A lot of people pick up cameras and think they're professional photographers. That's not the case here. I have no complaints whatsoever. I will absolutely recommend this guy to anyone needing a photographer for any reason. Trust me. This guy is the real freakin deal.

Lyly recently shot my company's annual retreat and she was simply awesome to work with! She is truly professional having arrived at each location well in advance of our arrival times. Also, her presence during the span of two days was hardly noticeable- not at all distracting like other photographers I have worked with in the past. And her work speaks for itself! Lyly is a storyteller with her photos which moves them past mere documentation and into quality content that I plan to use in my company's marketing materials as well. In short, I will not hesitate to work with Lyly again and will certainly be referring her to others. Thanks Lyly!

Needed a quick turnaround for a professional photo to be used in a company business directory. Made appointment with Jack on Wednesday, went to his studio for photo shoot on Thursday and had finished product on Friday. Enjoyed visiting with Jack throughout the photo shoot and he was the consumant professional as well. Pricing was very competitive. I will use Jack again for family portraits and any other photography needs I may have. Couldn't have chosen a better photographer for my needs.

Cristi was fantastic! Exceeded our expectations and was a professional in every sense of the word. Loved that he was early which gave us a chance to see if our preferred location would work. He pointed out that we would have the sun in our eyes, not good and found another spot close by which was perfect! We were a large family group with lots of strong personalities. He was able to get us to move along and used humor to make our session fun. Very easy to communicate with and quickly answered all of my questions. We were all coming in from different states and he was very nice about working with the tight schedule we had. I would definitely use him again if I needed a professional photographer for ANY occasion. The pictures come out wonderful and everyone was surprised at how he was able to get us to quit talking long enough to have us all looking in the right direction. Thank you Cristi for making this a fun family memory with loads of beautiful pictures as well!

This power couple is prodigious. I've never been more in love with pictures taken by a photographer. My fiance and I wanted a fun, themed engagement photo session. We decided on the theme of 1950s! Daniel and Hoda took our vision and ran with it. We got to get dressed up in 50s attire and go to the Denton square, where we had a blast taking pictures with them. They got our pictures back to us in a timely manner (which is something I have had issues with in the past from photographers). And what you get for the amount you're paying is unbelievable. They do not charge any fees for travel. They also don't make you pay for every picture you want! Most photographers make you pay a fee for the photo session, and then make you pay a fee on top of that for every single picture you want! Monarch Hill Weddings include the photography session as well as ALL of the pictures from your session-in color AND black and white! Talk about bang for your buck. I also want to point out how humble these two are! They are truly wonderful people to work with. Hoda is the cutest thing, with such an adorable personality! :) They both have a great sense of humor and make taking potentially awkward pictures feel a lot better. ALSO, I want to rave about the style of these photographers. They are not just photographers. They are ARTISTS. I am an artist as well (in the field of dance), so being able to collaborate with artists in a different field is exhilarating. Their pictures showcase their creativity as well as their keen eye for lighting (and all that other stuff you can see when looking at good photographers, but I'm not one, so I don't know all the lingo...camera angles?). I wouldn't recommend anyone else for your engagement and wedding photographers other than Daniel and Hoda with Monarch Hill Weddings. I'm even going to share on here the page with our engagement photos, because if my words do not express their talents enough, you can see for yourself in these pictures. It was a kid's st birthday party. We had two photographers, Joe and Chanel and both were very professional and adaptable. They took guest potraits and candid shots throughout the party and were willing to adapt to the needs of the party. They arrived on time and stayed till the time as per our contract. We will definitely rehire them for future projects.

We had the wonderful pleasure of having Martina photograph our wedding. Martina was beyond amazing and accommodating. She was very friendly, professional, she took the time to explain her vision, and have us give her our vision of the big day. She went above and beyond, was genuinely caring, and I will always be grateful to her for her suggestions that made our wedding day that much more special. The photographs Martina took were simply STUNNING. She captured every special moment of the day, and was able to tell my fairytale story with her work. The images were beautiful and I couldn't have asked for more. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Martina for all your photography needs and will be sure to recommend her to all my friends and family. Thank you Martina for your amazing work!

Our photographers were awesome. They showed up early, and were active the whole time. She got the pictures we wanted without taking all day and keeping us from our guest too long. They were around but not consistently in our faces unless we wanted them to be. They had a wonderful balance of getting what photos we wanted without taking away the fun of the evening. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
