- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was always in woodshop in school, as well as working for my father's concrete company. I really loved building things, but ended up in the advertising (installation/construction) field. I had an opportunity in 2005 to move from the retail/advertising side to take a job with a major national builder doing finishing touches and minor repairs on their homes (punch out) in about 2004. This really put me in a great place to learn! Having instant access to master carpenters, painters, electricians, and just about any trade I needed was something you just can't duplicate. From there I began doing side jobs in the evenings and on the weekends. The things I learned there allowed me to become a project manager for, what was at the time, the largest remodeler in Katy. This also turned out to be a great learning experience, I was taught not only the right methods, but also what made them better than other common practices. In addition I was lucky enough to really get an education in design. The details and little tricks that so many often overlook really do make all the difference. Unfortunately due to a series of personal tragedies that company closed, but not before I had learned enough to go out on my own. In 2007, just before my son was born, I started my first business (Katy Custom Kitchen & Bath) and have been on my own ever since. I still learn, everyday. Though now, we're Griffin Construction and my dad as well as many employees certainly help me tackle a work load I could of never imagined.
