Hired on Thumbtack

Marlon and Olivia Denkins do business as Red Chair Interiors and RCI Renovations By Design so I recommend caution if considering either company. They abandoned my house project before it was completed: their contract set a completion date of February 19th and the entire project was abandoned around March 23rd with only one small component of the project actually completed satisfactorily. They were hired to paint the interior walls, ceilings and trim, refinish all hardwood floors, completely remodel the master bathroom and replace the tub surround in the hall bathroom. - Hardwood floors were not properly sanded. - Patches that were required in the sheet rock were obvious and unsightly. Holes in the walls where drapery hardware had been removed were not properly filled and patched prior to painting. - Tile that was laid on the bathroom floor was uneven creating a serious tripping hazard. Tiles on the tub surround walls were not properly aligned or flush. Trim tile pieces were installed cracked. - Materials that were included in the cost of the project, such as bathroom vanity and vanity light, while paid for, were never delivered. The overall quality of their work was below industry standards according to contractors that provided estimates to complete the job. When requests were made for corrections, Mr. & Mrs. Denkins were defensive and argumentative. They were increasingly difficult to contact and unresponsive. They were consistently late for meetings and failed to meet project deadlines. When they abandoned the project, they left work poorly done and/or not done at all The contract they provided included a provision to terminate the contract via certified letter. Multiple attempts to send a certified termination letter to all known addresses failed as “undeliverable.” Olivia may be able to provide assistance with design ideas, but find another contractor to actually do the work. I had to hire all new contractors to repair, replace and finish work this husband/wife team promised to do. They took over $15,000 for work that had to be completely redone.

Upon first meeting husband and wife team Olivia and Marlon Denkins of RCI Renovations by Design (aka Red Chair Interiors), we came away liking them and confident they were able to do our kitchen remodel and do it well. Unfortunately, first impressions aren't always accurate. RCI Renovations by Design took 15 weeks to complete a 6 week project. Their workers rarely showed up for work (average 3 days a week) and rarely did a full 8 hour day. They lack communication skills; we would have to chase them down to find out where the workers were, which is very inconsiderate considering we were waiting around for someone to show up to work. They were rarely on site to supervise the quality of work being done; we were the ones that had to watch what was going on and call them to have their workers come back and fix mistake after mistake; they had to come back and fix almost every aspect of the project. They also lack customer service skills. Mrs. Denkins was defensive and argumentative. She never took responsibility for mistakes made and always had an excuse. She was actually yelling at my husband on two occasions, and I was on the phone when she went off on her granite guy. You NEVER speak to a client like that and certainly don't yell. The second time she got into it with my husband she was yelling like a banshee; I had to get on the phone and keep yelling her name until she realized it was me, then she calmed down. Very unprofessional conduct. The icing on the cake: They received the final check and promised that they would email a final paid invoice and that their cabinet people would be back the next week to fix two issues with the cabinets they installed. (I did get $150 off the total but it will cost more than that to have someone else come out and fix it). I have called, texted, emailed, Facebooked and they are completely ignoring us. What I don't understand is how hard is it to email an invoice and either provide me with the number to the cabinet guys or just be courteous and let me know they aren't coming and I need to hire someone else. Don't they want a good review, repeat business (they know we are remodeling three bathrooms after this), and referrals? I guess the warranty they promised is a sham. Sad thing is they probably think they did fine; they actually had the nerve to put our kitchen up on their Facebook page! If they think the way they do business is first-rate and the ordeal we experienced is acceptable, they need a reality check. I would NOT recommend RCI Renovations by Design for remodeling. They are unprofessional, lack communication, management, and customer service skills, are untrustworthy, and the quality of work is questionable. The whole process was very amateur and showed how inexperienced they are, contrary to how they present themselves at the initial meeting. Find someone else with more experience and excellent referrals before you get any work done. Interview the referrals in person and don't trust positive reviews on websites, as those can be fabricated.

I attempted to contact them many times to get a final estimate on my concrete project. I finally received a phone call from Mr. Denkins. He said he had not been receiving my Thumbtack messages and he was in the middle of a project but would call back. Never heard back... I hired another contractor who is more diligent.
