Juan came to my house to help reassemble a partially dissembled treadmill that had been moved from NC to TX months prior and was even missing a few certain screws/bolts. He came very prepared and was even able to find a few screws/bolts that would fit my machine to help fully reassemble the treadmill and to bring it successfully and carefully inside my home without scratching any door frames or the hardwood floors. Very impressed he was able to do it all within an hour and made things so easy for me. Would definitely recommend!!!!

I could not recommend Tex-A-Clean more highly. The service I received went beyond all expectations. I was desperate to find a water remediation company to help dry my home after the historic 2016 "tax day" rains flooded my home. I was having a very difficult time finding a company who would respond to my phone calls until Christian from Tex-A-Clean received my request. He called immediately and spent a long time on the phone with me brainstorming solutions to save my hardwood floors. He was there within a couple hours with the necessary equipment. In the days that followed, Christian called on a daily basis to check in and see how else he might be able to help. He regularly went above and beyond, referring me to other contractors I needed, offering advice and expertise on how best to get my home back to normal for the least amount of money, and even bringing extra equipment when it became available. He always made time to answer every question I had. I couldn't be more pleased with the personalized and friendly service I received. I was treated a like a person instead of just a dollar sign -- something you don't see very often any more.

Robert and Gabriel came in and immediately started working. We were surprised at how much they got done in such an short time. Robert literally rebuilt our whole staircase and basically custom built each step. Gabriel laid the flooring in the upstairs hallway, and all the trim and transition pieces as well as fixed our bathroom door which was sticking at no charge. We are extremely happy with the finished job and would highly recommend Roberts Hardwood Flooring Services.

We had Westside Floors lay tile plank, that looks like hardwood throughout our entire house! We loved the idea of not having to worry about wood floors getting damaged, so we decided on the tile. We are happy to say we made the right decesion. Westside floors was very patient with us, as we probably viewed about 40-50 different samples, before we selected the perfect one for us. We had just purchased our first house, so we were on a budget, and Westside Floors worked with our budget by showing up samples that was in our price range. Daniel explained that large tile jobs can be quite dusty, and it was, but a clean up crew was sent after the job was finished, which pleased us. We are looking into getting granite countertops done in a few months, and we will be contacting Westside floors for that job as well. Thanks Daniel for the house warming gift! ~Tad and Eli

We ripped out our fireplace so we hired DJ to continue our glued down, interlocking hardwood floors. DJ came in and simply got the job done. He showed up early, got the job done in less than a day and at a very reasonable price. He even came back to check it out a couple of days later to make sure it was perfect. I am recommending him to my parents who needs a similar job done. Thanks DJ!

Omar and MnM Flooring Tech are great! I will definitely use them again and recommend them to all my friends and family. I was in the process of refinishing my oak hardwood floors when I ran into a spot with rotted wood. I posted a request on Thumbtack for help fix this spot and Omar reponded to the add promptly and professionally. He was very helpful describing what needed to be done and gave me a great price. Omar and his crew arrived the very next morning and finished the job quickly and it looked great! Thanks Omar and MnM Flooring!

Good at communicating as the project went along. Workers put in some serious hours to demo tile, hardwood and laminate flooring then leveled it so I could install flooring. They also prepped and painted our entire first floor. I would say they did quality work on a pretty big project and my only negative feedback would be that two or more workers on some days could have helped the project finish up sooner. All employees were courteous and wanted to make sure things were done well.

Tim has done a good deal of work at my home, all of it was outstanding craftsmanship. He pays close attention to detail and makes sure each job is done correctly. He is honest (I gave him a key) and dependable, which can be a rare commodity these days. Tim re-did my whole kitchen, building custom cabinets, laying hardwood floors, painting, setting in my appliances, and building an island. I absolutely love my kitchen as do all who come see it. I would call Tim to do work for me any day, any time. His prices are fair and his work is quality. I know once this news gets out, I won't be able to get Tim to come back and do more jobs for me! If you need to ask about any more details of Tim's work, email me. He can't be beat;and your job will end up looking like it was done with attention to detail and skill.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
