Clint has been taking care of my yard for a month now, and so far it has worked well. He even came out twice one week when I accidentally left my back yard locked.

I can't recommend Texas Finest Scapes enough! I had hired another company to do our yard the day before an Open House, and they didn't show or let us know that they weren't going to show. I was desperate to find someone to come early the day of the Open House, and Uriel with Texas Finest Scapes said he could do it. Uriel showed up at 8:45 am (15 minutes early) on a Sunday with less than a day's notice and made my yard look spotless! And he was done well before the Open House. Thank you so much!!

David was great. We worked together to decide what to do with the back yard. He knew what would look good and what plants would be good in different areas of the yard. Both a landscaper and knowledgeable in plants was just wonderful. We changed the plan a few times and he was very flexible in design and timeframe to get it done. I can highly recommend him.

Great service. Santos and his crew came out the next day and removed 2 trees from our front/back yard. A local competitor was charging twice the price for the same job. Very professional and fast work. Highly recommend!

Mosaia and his crew did a large backyard renovation for me. This job was done in a couple phases over about a month. They did a great job. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. His prices are very fair. Here is a list of the things they did. Built a boulder retaining wall about 4ft tall by 80ft long. It turned out great. They also tore down the old wall of railroad ties. They took care of the permit and dealing with the city. It went pretty smooth Installed a new fence and gate on top of the wall. Looks great. They dug in drainage lines to stop the erosion in my back yard. Cut out a strip of the patio and installed some new drains to stop flooding. Installed OK milsap stone around all the back yard patio Installed a stone staircase thru the wall. It looks really good They moved the irrigation lines and fixed the broken ones Installed a flagstone path leading to the stairs Installed a new concrete pad for our pool pump and filter Built two flower gardens and filed them with potting soil. Laid new sod in the whole back yard. Mosaia handled all the procurement of the needed items. Everything from stones, concrete, wood, you name it, they took care of it. I will be having him do some more work on our yard soon. Their stone work is great.

Jake and his team did an excellent job with my sprinkler repairs. He checked my system to make sure it was running properly and completed any needed repairs. He also relocated a few sprinkler heads in my back yard to improve the coverage I would get when watering my lawn. I would definitely hire Jake again for my sprinkler maintenance/service needs.

Ricardo came out twice before the project started to make sure he understood my vision for the yard. He also went out of his way to find exactly the plants I was looking for. His crew was friendly and professional. He originally hired a 3rd party carpenter to build some garden boxes for the project, but when this guy did a terrible job, he started from scratch with his own crew and built those boxes right. Ricardo's prices were not cheap, but they were fair for the top quality job his crew does. His crew came back the week after to fix a bunch of sprinklers to fix dry spots in the design. They stand behind their work 100%.

Matt did an excellent job on my yard, which is a difficult one... it’s bigger because it sits in a cul-de-sac. He was able to fit me in same day and got the job done efficiently. Thank you!

Tim contacted me from Emerald Green and set up an appointment. He showed up and was so nice. They came for their first service and did not have to do too much because the grass had been cut, but you can tell they had been there. Edging and some trimming had been done. I look forward to a long relationship and being able to bring the yard back to life. I would recommend them again and again.

These guys are amazing! We bought a house last year with a very neglected 1/3 acre lawn, and decided to tear out and replace the entire thing this spring. I received several quotes and theirs was very reasonable for the amount of work needed. Alex was super friendly and knowledgeable, and on the day of the project Juan and his team showed up on time and got right to work. Between the three of them, they were able to completely tear out and replace an entire 1/3 acre lawn in TWO DAYS. This included scraping the existing grass and weeds, tilling, adding topsoil, laying and rolling sod, and rebuilding some flagstone paths that had been worn down into the dirt over the years. They even went above and beyond and tilled a few areas of unplanted flower beds that I had marked off in the back yard, and evened out the rock flower bed borders (making them look way better than I had been able to do on my own!). Everyone involved in this project was extremely nice and hard-working, and my new lawn looks so good that I've already had neighbors ask me for their card. I will absolutely call these guys again the next time I need any kind of landscape service, and have already recommended them to neighbors.

I'm truly happy to write a referral for Julius and his team. I started out having his team tear down an existing railroad tie retaining wall and replacing it with a stone retaining wall about four feet high and thirty to forty feet long inclusive of a five step enhancement going from the drive to an upper side yard. He gave a very competitive job price and completed the work ahead of his projected completion date. His crew showed up on time, were very courteous and cleaned up every day before they left. Julius was very approachable and took pains to highlight the progression of the work and to explain what could be expected and when. From the experience of the first wall my neighbor and I employed him to remove a second railroad tie type retaining wall and rebuild with a similar stone wall, this time twice as tall, similar in length but of a lower and upper dual wall with a bed between the two levels, as well as removing and disposing of several large bushes that had outgrown their space in the front yard. Again, they were here when they said they'd be here and did excellent and professional work. While finalizing the second project I decided to complete the yard's walls and have employed Julius to remove and replace a third wall. Again, competitive, courteous and fast with a great attitude and a beautiful finished product. Would I hire him to do additional work or recommend his crew for similar jobs? ABSOLUTELY!!

Omar responded to a request, for cleaning up neglected yard which needed the shrubs trimmed, several dead roses removed, grass cut, etc. He not only provided a time he would arrive to give an estimate...unlike others who no showed he confirmed the time AND came on time!! He provided us a more than fair estimate and followed up with a "Thank you" which in this day is sadly unheard of by any contractor or even professional. Prior to his designated work day, he reconfirmed again. The day he was to do the work....he again showed on time! Again...pluses for both my husband and I. Omar and his partner's quality of work was better than our previous landscaping contractor with a large crew was far superior. As well as their detail to the work they were preforming. The previous work we had, sadly caused us to loose several bushes due to lack of care. Where as this time, they were careful to due to continuing growth along with blowing of leaves along with weeds. We were so impressed, we are now having Omar do our yard. As well as will have him do additional work for us. He is a professional landscaper and provides a great value for his work. having found him, we are quite pleased and look forward to continuing working with him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
