Loved working with Lone Star. Mike listened to what we wanted, offered advice and suggestions, was super flexible and accommodating, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them. -- we had our yard and beds replaced with decorative gravel and some plants removed and/or relocated, some stone edging put in and a small driveway laid.

Al installed a 45” gate and approximately 5’ of fencing to close a gap in an existing fence. Total job took 2 days to complete. I think it took 2 days to allow the cement to cure overnight on the two new gate posts. Al did a good job for less than originally quoted. Al identified options for saving me money but I had the final decision. I had some specific and unusual requirements for the job. Al met those requirements once they were clearly understood. For those aspects of the job where I did provide clear specific requirements, Al asked a few questions and delivered a quality job. Al took over a day to return my initial call but I am glad I waited. Al could check his voice mail a little more frequently.

Mario did excellent job cleaning gutters. Was very careful to see that material in gutters was put in a plastic bag. Also secured rain gauge that had broken from downspout. Have hired Mario for another job - replacing broken expansion board in driveway.

Awesome! He was on time, efficient and affordable! Even when I changed my mind on certain things I wanted he worked with me and also my schedule with work and other life events I had going on at the time. He is a very polite and focused handyman! Did a variety of things for me in my home; Installation of Pendant lights, can lights, all new door jam and frame work, track and closet door installation, window screen repairs and installations, drywall repair and other little things I needed work on in the home. I would definitely recommend Jose to others who are in need of handyman services! :D

Once Juan came out to give an estimate, he was quick to get the job scheduled and quick to complete the project. We're very happy with the gate and how he was able to make use of the existing steel poles to save on costs.

good price - good communication before - during and after - he replaced an exterior door and installed a new pet door - very patient with dogs and grandkids when they showed up - the only thing that could have made it better was if it hadn't started raining in the middle of the project - was initially drawn to his response due to his Vet status but would definitely hire him again.

Rene was awesome. Set everything up via text and e mail. He came when he said he would, provided a fair estimate and finished fixing our fence and gate in one afternoon! We have other projects that we will certainly be contacting him for in the very near future.

Bobby Fiske has been helping me for several years now. He is wonderful and efficient help. He is always prompt and ready to go. He never wastes time and always finishes up my list I give him when he arrives. His charges are reasonable especially for the top quality of work he exhibits. I have found Bobby to be knowledgable in any thing I need him to do. Even before I had a heart attack about a year ago and he made my life so much easier in all the repairs he has done - fixing my sliding glass doors, making a small gate in my garage to keep my dogs from getting out, repairing my linoleum floors and he has fixed my plumbling, built book shelves, helping to organize my garage, yard work, cleaned my swimming pool, installed water faucets, repaired my bathtub water outlets, repaired, patched and painted outside squirrell holes in my house, caulked windows, checked and aired up my car tires, replaced and/or charged car batteries, installed a water pump in my bird bath, carried numerous heavy items for me from room to room, (and also repaired my handywoman mistakes) to name a just a very few of the things he has helped me with over the years. I've found that I can call him for anything at any time. Except for electrical work there is hardly an area he doesn't know about and if he doesn't he know about it he will research it and learn about it. I can't even begin to list everything he has done (and done well) around my house and property over the last four or so years. And I have trusted him enough to ask him for his good and thoughtful advise about many household repairs and similar matters on many occasions. He is always pleasant and cheerful and, best of all, trustworthy in any area of my house. He returns my calls or emails quickly and follows up whenever needed. I was so fortunate the day I found his business card on the bulletin board at True Grits in Jonestown years ago. I will continue to hire Bobby for as long as I have things for him to do around my house and property and will always consider him as a friend. A final note: on top of all his professional help he helped me one day by giving me a ride to the pharmacy when I couldn't drive after an auto accident, and, even after I kept insisting, he wouldn't take any gas money or payment for his time and trouble even though I knew he was losing valuable work time and income. I hired Derby to take down 22 feet of 6-foot-tall fence and put up 22 feet of 6-foot-tall fence that included a gate. He provided a quote that was in line with the other estimates and was able to come out and do the job the next day. He was easy to talk to, answered my questions (I had quite a few), and did the work as promised. He's a good guy - very personable. We even talked after about some other work that I may have him do later (he has a background in landscaping and has other handyman type skills).

Justin built a custom cabinet around a washer and dryer that was installed in our bathroom. He was thorough in his measurements, precise with his installation, and extremely professional from start to finish. We were so impressed with his work that my wife and I have discussed having Justin make a custom table and chairs for our dining area. We highly recommend his work!

I was very grateful that Adam was available when I needed help. I went on Thumbtack to find someone who could compact dirt in my backyard. After I got a response from Adam, I sprung 2 gates that needed repair on him and when he came to check out the gates, I showed him that I also needed a dryer vent cover installed. Our communication first started on Tuesday morning and work on all 3 was completed today. I am very pleased with the jobs done and have already requested Adam to complete work on my she shed.

They installed a new power gate on my property and was there to help me with the technical side of things after it was all put together. The initial gate setup I had ordered was not the kind I expected and they helped me order what I wanted and needed. The job was done quicker then expected with a budget I was pleased with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
