I've used two different trainers before for my dog and had little to no improvement. I decided to try Traveling Dog Trainer based on her reviews and her reply to my ad. Lauren did a great job on our first lesson. She showed me a few areas where I'm lacking and how to make my dog more confident in me as a leader. She didn't try to sell me on more lessons, which I liked that she wasn't pushy about it. She suggested that I keep practicing what we went over and of I feel the need for more training after, to give her a call. I highly recommend her.

Maury did an excellent job with our dog. There are so many dog trainers out there we were not sure who to go with, but after only 1 week of training, we can see a huge difference. Maury loves the dogs he trains, and always wants a chance to see pictures of our dog. His 2 follow appointments are so helpful as well.

Butch is amazing. My dog had severe fear angression and has a bite history. After being with Butch for several weeks, my dog is no longer aggressive and loves meeting new people. Not only did Butch work with my dog pertaining to his aggression, he also taught him skills and I'll continue to see Butch in the future for further training. If you dog needs help with aggression or obedience, K9 Kountry is the place to go! Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Stephanie was fantastic with Crown. He was a little nipping puppy that wanted to chew on everything AND everyone in the house before she came out for our 1st session and now he's a well behaved little boy (some of it is still a work in progress but the progress with only 3 sessions is INCREDIBLE). My husband and I decided to use Walk of Life Dog Training because of Stephanie's flexibility with our schedule - we both work long hours and don't always have congruent time off and Stephanie was willing to figure out a time that worked best for the both of us! Crown, our puppy, absolutely LOVED his time with her and it was amazing to see how expanding his mind through training was eliminating the unwanted behavior that we'd experienced prior to training with Stephanie. Additionally, she is so incredibly kind and just wants to make sure that your life with your dog is as happy as possible! We would absolutely recommend Stephanie and Walk of Life Dog Training to anyone that's interested in getting their dog trained - puppy or not, I know Stephanie can teach you some tricks and effectively address any concerns you have with your pup! Thanks a bunch!

Nicole is an outstanding dog trainer! When we adopted two shelter dogs of different ages two months ago, we didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into! We decided to bring Nicole in to help refine our dog's behaviors and help them settle into their new home quickly. Nicole's approach is both gentle and consistent. She also provided great tips along the way for things we can do going forward as our dogs' training becomes more advanced. Communication was always clear and everything went smoothly from beginning to end. All of us, dogs included, miss seeing her every weekend. She was truly a joy to work with! We highly recommend Nicole to all of our family and friends, and the minute we decide our dogs are ready for more advanced training, Nicole is who we will call! Thank You NICOLE!!! :-)

I found Nancy online almost a year ago, and found myself having a hard time figuring out what dog training classes I needed for my dog Bowinkle. We had just adopted Bowinkle and he was about 6 months old and into everything and HORRIBLE at walking on a leash. When I called and spoke to Nancy I immediately felt I had made the right choice in calling her first. I didn't want to have to take Bowinkle to a class group setting and not get one-on-one attention and struggle with Bowinkle being to "interested" in the other dogs. The fact that Nancy does all visits at our house and offers many different types of service plans was a huge plus. I had no clue what we were getting into and how long we may or may not need her. We decided to sign up for a year; since then she has come every 2-3 weeks. What I like most about Bark Busters is we as dog owners are learning the correct way to train our dog(s) and become their Pack Leader. I can have as many dogs as I want from here on out and know that I can train/lead them on my own, and if I have a hard time I can call Nancy and she'll be here to assist. Nancy is a very professional and respectful person whom my pets, and myself have grown to love. I recommend her to everyone who is interested in dog training. I thought my Bowinkle was never going to grow out of his old habits and today I have a completely different dog. Thank you so much Nancy for your help, care and knowledge. Thanks, Krystin Scott

I initially chose Zoom Room to enroll my 8 week old puppy into puppy preschool for socialization and basic obedience. This was the best decision! Heather is great and my puppy just passed his AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test! He will now be moving on to puppy obedience and we will definitely keep coming back here! There is outstanding agility equipment here and my puppy loves learning the agility course mixed in with his obedience training! A great way to keep them engaged and learning and also super fun for the owners too! I highly recommend coming to Zoom Room for your dog/puppy training needs! We will keep coming!

After shopping around looking at different dog trainers, I'm SO happy I went with Pamela! Over the course of the few weeks, she taught me so much about how my body language and tone of voice communicate different things to my dog and how to use that to teach him obedience and manners. Not only did my dog master the commands, I learned how to be in control and take leadership of walks and day to day life. Pamela offered great advice and insight when I needed it and I would highly recommend her to anyone! Thank you!

Tammy is very good with animals. She gave us a lot of useful information to help us in working with our dogs. The sessions worked more with the owners than dogs. Just keep in mind it will be up to the owner to do the training not the All About Dogs staff. We were wanting someone to work with our dogs and train them and for us to reinforce what they were taught. In 2 sessions this was not an obtainable goal. We are happy with our start but have a long way to go.

Tena is amazing! I had two badly behaved dogs that needed training. Tena helped me set up a list of behavioral goals for my dogs. She then provided a detailed training schedule to help accomplish those goals. After just a few weeks of weekly training sessions, my dogs can now sit, lie down, stay, and “leave it” on command. They now walk on a leash without pulling – something I was unable to accomplish on my own. Tena is affordable, knowledgeable, patient, and dependable. She teaches you how to train your dog so that you can practice commands on your own. I highly recommend Tena for any dog training needs. Cyndi L.

Brian was very good with our dog. He's much better walking on a leash and listens to us better than when he left. The only downside to training our dog this way is that it's a remote location so we have far more distractions in our neighborhood than out on the ranch. But Brian did some socialization training and left us with good tips and instructions for continuing to help our dog learn that he needs to be calm when approaches other dogs. Our dog was sad to see Brian leave.

The team at Canine Perceptions exhibit a great caring attitude toward the animals they train. They were more concerned about getting Daisy trained properly than they were with trying to get her through the program in as little time as possible or have her back on a set schedule. This is the third dog we have had trained by a professional trainer and of the 3 trainers we have used Canine Perceptions is by far at the top of the list.

I had a crazy dog! Food aggression/ horrible on leash/ always jumped on people and greeted them with a pee puddle. I contacted Chris - and through our free consultation he assured me this is not something I have to just live with and that he could help us learn how to communicate with the dog so the dog knew who was I. Charge and we could get control. Sure enough he did. It took a few visits - more cause of us being slow learning not the dog or Chris. Chris worked magic and now we have a wonderful obedient fur baby. Thanks Chris !

Brandon did a great job training my dog, Tobias. He took the time and was patient with my boxer/lab mix. Tobias had a large problem with obeying my commands in public with distractions. He now is able to focus on me! I just need to keep up all the hard work Brandon put in! Thank you Brandon for everything!

We are absolutely thrilled with the results we've experienced with our puppy after Traci's 2 week "Puppy Headstart" program. It's incredible the amount out puppy was able to learn, retain and apply in her daily life. She is such a joy and a wonderful member of the family!

Great class. The trainer is very patient with the dogs and their owners and you can tell that she loves dogs. She gives you homework to do with your dog for the next class and if you follow her directions, you’ll see the progress with your dog. The trainer provider great info on dog behavior.

I came to Copilot Academy with our 5 month old Aussie/Blue Heeler mix named Roxy. She was CRAZY to the point that she barked at everything that moved, living or non-living. I couldn’t even go on a walk with her which frustrated me immensely. I booked private lessons with Natalie and after 6 month my dog was completely transformed. I love how well behaved Roxy is now whether it is on leash and off leash. I also appreciate that Copilot Academy’s trainers are honest, non-judgemental and supportive in every possible way. It was money well spent!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
