Rafael did a great job on my system under very difficult conditions. My system had been damaged by tree roots, and he was able to repair and reroute lines and get my system back up and running. He even found an additional leak, fixed it, and never mentioned an additional fee until I insisted. Rafael arrived when he said he would, and he was always professional and very easy to work with. I will certainly call him in the future when I need work on my system.

Had a leak somewhere in my sprinkler system. He came out, we located the general area and then he found the break in the pipe. In addition he added my tree soakers to a separate circuit. Very nice, thoroughly professional.

David was responsive, thorough, honest, and fair. He showed up when he said he would, completed the project as promised (which involved natural pruning, tree removal, poison ivy removal, and general clean up). I will definitely contact him again!

My name is Dan Lang. After having a number of unhappy experiences with landscape and tree services I found Patino Tree Services. Ramon Hurtado, the operations manager met with me and we discussed what needed to be done in my yard. Patino Tree Services arrived at my home at the time we agreed upon and performed the services I requested. My yard was weeded(from the roots), mulched with mulch that stayed in my beds, and my mature trees and shrubs were pruned to my desires. The pruning was my biggest concern ,but was performed exactly as I requested. I consider Patino Tree Services as reliable and honest and consider Ramon and his crew as Family.

Michael did lawn services for my large lot in Fairview, TX. He is an exceptional guy and I give him 5 stars. His rates are competitive. He came on time, was extremely friendly, had all the right equipment for doing lawn service, was well organized and did a great job. You don’t have to monitor him, or, run behind giving directions – once he starts the job, he will find every minor stuff that needs attention and will do it all. He does a quality job – not a rush job. He is patient and goes about his job methodically. I was very happy with the way he did his job. I will highly recommend him to anyone in the DFW area. Thanks Michael for all the good work.

We met with Mr. Vasquez today to get his quote for lawn and shrub services for the coming year. He was extremely polite, friendly and understanding regarding our specific needs to get our lawn back in shape. He listened to us and then gave us some really great suggestions. He carefully explained everything that he would be doing and then gave us his quote. We can't wait for him to get started with the work!! He was a steps above all the others! So knowledgeable and very easy to work with!! Charlie/Betty B. Frisco, Texas

Marcelo did a great job with my yard. This was a large job including adding to a retaining wall, matching existing 20 year old work, removing tree stumps, and modifying my sprinkler system. Everything looks great now. Both Marcelo and his men were very professional and kept me well informed during the whole process.

I used Land Turf for a landscaping project and they were terrific. Land Turf provided an initial consultation, reviewing local flora (flower, grass and bush) options and even discussed which may have seeds/berries that would be poisonous to a dog or cat (I have both). He provided designs based on the layout of my lawn and called me when he saw various upgrade options (that we had discussed) when we went out to purchase items. I was provided a budget beforehand and there were no surprises and he has been willing and available to answer my questions since. Additionally, they were in-and-out in the time that they told me (1-2 days for my project, which included an in-ground sprinkler installation) with minimal mess, which was very much appreciated. I love the look of my front and backyard now and really appreciate Land Turf for working with me and my budget. I should note, Land Turf was not the cheapest option, but they weren't the most expensive either, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better group of qualified and customer-service oriented individuals to help plan and complete a project.

Great job. Rain cased some delays but they were overcome. Jeff from Alterra created the backyard from design to execution with our involvement from a vision we had which we were able to verbalize. Personally seeing and picking out the individual plants with the owner of the company was an example of the personal attention we received. It was my wife's project and she acted as Project Manager. But I got the majestic palm tree that I wanted!

Project completed and we were very satisfied with the end results. The tree we needed drop was extremely close to several obstacles. They dropped the tree in an exact location missing all of them. They even had them drop another tree after seeing their work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
