Jon is a very patient guitar teacher. Our son, Nathanael is 13 and has been taking guitar lessons for five years and he has been through four guitar teachers. Jon has been able to take him to the next level. He is doing more than just learning how to play a song or two. He is learning to understand music with his guitar and technique when playing. Working with Jon has not only helped Nathanael excel as a guitar player but also in band as a clarinet player in middle school. Jon's studio is comfortable for his students and guests. He is always in a cheerful mood when he is teaching and we are always made to feel welcome. We appreciate what Jon has done for our son because music has helped him excel as a student, a musician, and as a person. We would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for an instructor.

Damon performed at my party in Trinity Groves recently. He and his band were on time, brought their own equipment and were set up before my guests arrived. His vocals were amazing and the band - all consummate professionals. It was a great night - they played longer than expected - which was great and his playlist was perfect for my audience. You can't go wrong with Damon he is a pleasure to work with and a gifted artist.

I have been with Pete going on a year and really enjoy my lessons. I am a late senior learner and have specific things I want to learn... Blues and Boogie Woogie. Pete listened to my needs and has given me great direction. I still struggle with reading music and changing chords quickly, but I know that will come with practice. Great patient teacher!

I first contacted Mark after seeing an online advertisement for piano lessons in the Addison area. I mentioned to him that I was interested in learning piano and had absolutely no knowledge of piano, although I did have a background in music as a vocalist and trombonist for a band in college. He cheerfully followed up with me and had me come in to the piano gallery for a preview lesson, introducing me to the basics and making recommendations on keyboards and music. After only a few months of lessons I was on my way to a newly discovered passion. Mark has been instrumental in advancing my musical abilities and has been extremely flexible in scheduling lessons, as well as very adaptable to my abilities.

It has been an absolute pleasure to enjoy the excellent musical stylings of the Jackie Pock Band. With Brandon killing it on guitar and Jackie with her superior vocal skills they flow through the genres with funk and soul! I highly recommend them for any occasion! Oh yeah, and they write some rad original tunes as well!

I had hired Dave to play at my mother-in-laws 80th Birthday Party at her Country Club. We ended up adding two of his other musicians for a swing/jazz/American Songbook trio. I cannot say enough good things about them - they were easy to work with, fantastic musicians, sensitive to the audience, kind, great value...nearly every one of the 70+ guests attending remarked on how amazing they were and how they truly made the party special. Thank you so much Dave! I would very highly recommend them!!

My son, Eric has been taking lessons from Mariah for the last two years. He had previous classical piano lessons, but wanted to learn Jazz piano. In just a few lessons she taught him enough to pass an audition for Jazz piano at Booker T Washington HS for the Performing Arts. He is presently taking vocal lessons and has taught him ways to increase his vocal range as in how to access the high register of his chest range without straining. I would highly recommend her to someone that is looking for an excellent vocal coach.

Mark is a good player and more than good enough to teach beginners through expert players. Never intimidates, and has a good way of explaining the basics of playing. Always on time for appointments and very professional.

Travis worked with me on the recording of two albums as a session guitarist. His work employed technicalities that helped shape the future of my band's work. These albums have secured an 8 week tour, and my playing as an experienced guitarist has been influenced by Travis' input. If I could, I would practice with Travis regularly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
