Dale was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. He installed a ceiling fan which was at a 45° angle. Installation was no problem for him and he even went out of his way to go to Lowes and Home Depot to purchase additional parts. He even painted the screws to ensure they did not show up as silver on our black fan. AAA service. Thanks a bunch!! Highly recommend for numerous repairs you may have.

Gamez Drywall and Repair installed a ceiling in my bathroom that had been previously removed and replaced all the walls. I wanted them to create a "box" in the ceiling to hold the base of my chandelier (to raise the chandelier higher). They understood exactly what I was trying to accomplish and did a great job. When they showed up I actually had a couple other surprise drywall projects since our initial meeting to discuss the estimate. They were flexible and accommodated the extra projects. They also completely textured the walls and ceiling in the powder room, fixed some recently created holes in my dining room ceiling and repopcorned to match the existing and installed a panel of drywall behind my upstairs toilet (the plumbing was recently rerouted and Sheetrock removed). When it came time for texture they offered me several techniques. I asked if they could replicate like the rest of the rooms to keep consistent and they did a great job of matching. The room looks exactly like the vision I had in my mind. They were very professional, showed up on time for the estimate meeting and also when they came back to do the work and their pricing was fair value for the work/services provided. I would hire/recommend again.

Sparkling Svcs came out to our condo to fix our interior ceiling which was drooping in a bedroom. They prep the area and the raised the drywall with the correct screws, the old company used nails which caused the drooping or settlement crack. They fixed the whole thing and it looks good. I am very satisfied with their work and can't wait to hire them for my next project. So glad I found him on Thumbtack. i highly recommend them.

Matt came and did an inspection to find the root cause for a small water leak and the source for some water marks in our kitchen ceiling. He showed pictures of his findings and we decided to hire him. He came back another day to perform the repair. He showed up on time and the communication was very good. He seems like an honest guy and takes his time to investigate. However, our issue is still ongoing and was NOT resolved by his repair. Otherwise I would have given him 5 stars.

Mr. Dennis Coleman was an excellent handyman; he arrived on time to install two high ceiling light fixtures and high ceiling fan, and even installed a chandelier on very short notice. He and his helper were very kind and completed the work in a timely manner. Of course the end results were awesome too, just look at the pictures! Thank you Dennis, we will definitely hire you again for other home improvements and refer you to our friends!

Mitchell installed 5 ceiling fans, 2 coach lights, 2 kitchen pendant lights and repaired my fridge. He did a great job, even went the extra mile to caulk around the lights as needed and run to Home Depot for extra supplies that I forgot. We'll be hiring him again!

Background: My home had 30 years of do-it-yourself remodeling done prior to me purchasing it, and the drywall was in a very sorry state: multiple textures, popcorn ceiling only partially removed, uneven and sagging drywall on the ceilings, etc. Additionally, I had moved some walls and done a bunch of electrical work, which left some spaces without drywall / holes where old wiring was removed. The Planning: Roberto met with me and we walked through the entire house with an eye for not just fixing the issues, but also improving things to meet current trends. I found this extremely helpful, as we were able to strategically scope this first project to minimize rework in the future! Roberto stressed that he is a perfectionist, and ensured me that if things were uncovered during the project he would either fix them as well or bring me in to review what additional work would be needed. On day 1, Roberto arrived with a crew of 5 people and walked them through the project, splitting them up into teams for maximum efficiency. I checked in after the first day and found they had fully protected my floors with cardboard, sealed off and covered fixtures and furniture with plastic, and had already made a lot of progress. This inspired a lot of confidence, and I didn't need to check back in for the remainder of the project. The results are spectacular. What looked like a war zone now looks like a nearly brand new home! No sagging ceilings, all the same texture, smooth ceilings, a new wall enclosing a bathroom that previously only had a partial divider wall, and his team even fixed up some things they found as they worked. All in all, the project was done on time, very professionally, and with little interruption to my work schedule. Highly recommended!

I had just bought a house, and was in need of a handyman after the original one fell through. It was truly a blessing that he did, because I was lucky enough to find Gary! He responded to my request immediately, was available quickly and let me say he is prompt! From the word go, Gary and Justin were off, and any challenge that presented itself, they pushed through and we're done early to boot. They did several repairs (thanks to a previous owner who tried to do things himself), including garage door bracket/ceiling repair, replacing glass in two metal windows (way more labor intensive than I thought), rerouting pvc pipe off a large water heater to an exterior wall and completely removing/installing an attic door. When the attic door we just bought was broken, he rushed out and got a new one and was back in a flash. They were fast, thorough and extremely clean. They even swept the garage when they were done. Before they left, Gary was happy to answer any questions I had about things that needed fixing, and even gave me some tips on things I could fix myself. I will definitely be calling them again. They are very reasonable too. I have found the perfect handyman!

Zach helped me with a complete remodel of my bathroom from floor to ceiling. He has an artistic flair and suggested ideas for my consideration along the way. He installed the tile floor and retextured the walls as well as helping with the installation of the vanity. He was also great about identifying areas of cost savings. He is prompt and professional and my bathroom turned out better than I expected. I would recommend Zach for any home remodeling projects.

at first they just replaced the inside fixture of the can light. That didn't fix the issue so the had to replace the whole can light in the ceiling. good thing it wasn't too difficult. It actually looks better than the old one. the old one looked like an old style and wasn't flush withe the ceiling. the new one is. I would use them again and recommend them to others.

Joel and his team were absolutely fantastic. He is very knowledgeable and has great recommendations. We had them install new drywall and ceiling in our “kitchen”. They were able to repair some damage to our ceiling and it turned out great. They also installed all of the tile floors: main bathroom, master bathroom and in our kitchen. Absolutely amazing! Their work was great and we’ll be using them again for later on to install our baseboards. I’ve added some before and after images.

I'm an avid gardener. I had a new fence built last year and the original potting bench was removed during demo of old fence. In Feb '18 Humphrey built a custom potting bench to my size and material specifications. In addition to four sturdy front and back legs, it is stabilized on two sides by the fence. He worked quickly and accurately to fit and level the 16 foot bench with shelves above and below in 2-1/2 days. He added corrugated plastic as a cover from the roof and installed a gutter downspout. He went out of his way to find smaller L brackets for the upper shelf! Truly enjoyed working with him! Recommend 100%!

Chris (the owner) provided a good quote for his services (installing ceiling lights, replacing some porch railing spindles, and removing and installing a new back door and storm door). He worked quickly, offering good suggestions when they were needed, and cleaned up all the "mess" after the projects were completed. Will use this company again in the near future for additional projects.

I recently decided to contract for a covering for my patio so the family can enjoy BBQ and relax outside year around. I searched the Internet for contractors and then requested bids from a handful. After talking with reps from several companies I settled on Cuttwood Construction. I enjoyed meeting Curtis Sharp and was most happy he shared my vision for style and quality. Cuttwood wasn’t the lowest or highest bidder, but I felt the best value and quality. I should note that other contractors wanted anywhere from 30 to 90 days to begin construction. Since it was already late May I wanted to have the project done before the 4th of July or it could wait until next year! Curtis was able to make it happen! The project was started and completed in six days! Since the project was in my backyard Curtis had one of his crew haul the lumber from the delivery point in my driveway to the building site immediately after delivery. David (with some assistance) actually performed the majority of the construction from framing to roofing and to the finish work. I was amazed at how fast they performed the demolition where the new cover joined my house, and then had the framing and roof sheathing all done the first day! I must note that David takes great pride in his workmanship—he is a real craftsman! The finished project included wiring and installation of a ceiling fan, and the addition looks just like it was original to construction of the house. The crew did an excellent job of cleaning up the site and removing debris upon completion. Curtis came to inspect the progress on a daily basis and sometimes multiple times as the project neared completion. He was responsive to my questions, suggestions, and concerns, and I am completely satisfied with the final product. I would hire Cuttwood for future projects with complete confidence.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
