Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Erick was very responsive and described everything that will be done very thoroughly. He installed the plug for the tesla charger in a timely manner and a very acceptable price. Beat everyone's price on this app along with other electricians that came and quoted me. Will definitely hire again for any future electrical jobs.

Brandon fixed a couple of problems that previous electrician/handyman had created. The money I paid for his work will come back to my pocket in a month when I see a lower electricity bill. The fan of my AC unit was running non-stop. He quickly identified the problem and fixed it, whereas my AC guy and previous electrician had both told me I would need to change the AC board (above $400). He also fixed wiring to my ceiling fan. He showed me where the problem was and even where previous people had violated safety codes. He knew what he was doing and what to expect which means he has a lot of experience. I would definitely hire again.

This was by far my BEST experience with an electrician I’ve ever had! Not only did he respond to my inquiry within a minute, he was very responsive in explaining what it was I needed and very reasonable. To top it off, HE CAME tonight, YES you read that right, he offered to help me right away! I cannot express my thanks to this man who made the trip to give me light back in my front yard area before the night was over. To top it off even more, he was Friendly and caring in person as well..A true professional…You can truly tell he cares about helping his customer. I have found me an electrician for life…Thank you Sir. 10 stars!!!!

They arrived the day after Thanksgiving. They evaluated the electrical issue and resolved in a timely manner. They are truly a company you can depend on in terms of quality and integrity. Wow! Super professional, high quality work, very open communication and no surprises. The crew came in on Easter morning to give me an estimate and ended up completing the job on the spot. They ran a new 240 line to my kitchen island and added an outlet. They discussed every step of the way and confirmed exactly what I wanted. They are my new go to electricians and I highly recommend to anyone!

Todd from Mr. Electric was amazing. I have been trying to get a certain pendant light to work for over a year. I had to return it twice thinking the problem was the fixture. I went through 4 master electricians who said something was wrong with the wiring. It took Todd an hour to get the fixture to work without any problems. Thanks Todd and Thank you Mr. Electric.

I reached out to Jay for a breaker issue which causes my garbage disposal and dishwasher to trip on a daily basis. He was prompt in his response on Thumbtack and was very professional. He was here a few minutes ahead of schedule but he and his crew came in ready to assess my issues and provide me with a very fair and reasonable service cost. I like that because most of the electricians on Thumbtack charge $69 plus in service call out and will not waive unless you use them for the service … and what if estimate was outside of your budget? You’re SOL to say the least. So I commend Jay and family for one, having excellent customer service and great work ethics and two, offering fair and reasonable “free” estimates although I do understand and respect the costly gas prices, Houston traffic and a service providers time! Jay, customers will continue to gravitate to your business and blessings will continue to flow! Keep up the Great Work!
