I'd already had someone come out, from a company which advertises extensively in San Antonio, to repair my 40-year-old Friedrich furnace/air conditioning system when the AC stopped working, in March 2017. He said the problem was a Freon leak, and the Freon for it was no longer available. All I could do was have a new furnace installed. This would cost about $10,000. I then called Joe, since I was about to have guests from out of state. He came out on a Sunday and quickly determined that the blower was not working, because a belt was loose. He replaced that belt, and also found that the "run" capacitor was shot. This is a capacitor that kicks on only when it gets extremely hot. He replaced that, too. He found no Freon leak and my air conditioner is working just fine now. While I thought his charge was a little high, at $200, it is sure a lot lower than $10,000, and he did go home and come back to get the new belt. I was very grateful. He said he ordinarily works on big commercial systems. It was clear he knew exactly what he was doing.

I hired Nicholas to clean out my dryer duct. He traveled from San Antonio to my house in San Marcos at no extra charge, arrived at the agreed-upon time, and got the job done efficiently while explaining what he was doing and why. He even told me where I could get the equipment to do it myself next time if I wanted to.

Frank Flores with Flo-Rite mechanical installed new ducting in out 20+ year home. He kept us informed of all the work being done and was completed same day and all old ducting removed . The excellent job reduced out electric bill by $65.00 from the previous month. He did an excellent job in January installing an energy efficient A/C unit. My Dryer duct/vent had never been cleaned for as long as we've owned this house. Turns out the ducting itself was broken in the attic and they were able to repair it right then and there. The additional fee for the repair was a little higher than I expected, but the work seems quality and I'm just happy to have a functional dryer vent again. The additional $260 was a bit much, and I didn't get a call before they arrived, otherwise they'd have gotten 5 stars.

I checked a lot of companies when we realized we had gunk growing on the outside of our vents. I got ranges of quotes and I really researched what it would take to do a quality job so the gunk would be gone. Robert , the owner and worker went through the whole process. He was straightforward with the bid and said it would cost an amount for each vent , register and fogger to kill the gunk, mildew and such. I love that he takes before and after pics and he shows you what you have. He had to cut a hole in our box and OMG, it was full of mildew , 30 years worth. Gross , no wonder my husband has been coughing. We tried to get a little discount and Robert is firm. I now know why . The amount of work and care he gave to our job was amazing. He works fast and does an outstanding job. The before and after pics really show that he actually cleans all the way to the whole unit. He power washes the vents that need it . His equipment is very powerful , commercial grade equipment. He comes in a large moving like truck . The dust and mildew are spin and sucked and spun into a hose that goes to his truck to dispose of. It was important that the stuff not be in the house. Almost all the other companies had a bunch of bad reviews for air duct cleaning, leaving debris in the house. We knew we need a perfectionist that would get it all. Robert is the man. We paid about $1300 for all he did and feel he was worth every penny. I saw almost every area to the outside wall in the returns and they were so clean ! Yeah. We have had the vents cleaned by many other companies but never did they even show us their work. They were in and out on 30 to 40 min. Robert cleaned for over 3 hours. We can breathe so much better ! Yeah! I give him and his company top awards! I feel like we have new vents which would have cost so much to replace. Thank you Robert and Joseph!!

My A/C went out last Wednesday night--a tragic occurrence in Florida in late June. After doing some research on Thumbtack, I called The right Choice Heating And Air at 3 PM on Thursday afternoon. The tech, Jon, was at my place at 4 PM to check out the issue. I was very impressed by the speedy response and by Jon's professionalism. He assessed the situation and was able to provide me with a solution very quickly. He replaced the motor on my outside unit... and my A/C was fixed before 5 PM. And the price was very reasonable. I'd call The Right Choice Heating And AI r again in a heartbeat!

John @ Tiger Services came out to do our maintenance on A/C & Heating. He was here on time. I got a call from the office telling me he was on the way. He was friendly and professional and wore his shoe covers, which was nice since it was wet outside. I felt that he did a thorough job checking out the systems and he detailed it on the invoice. I have always gotten great service from Tiger Services. Great company with great employees.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
