My AC wasn't working. Anything could have been wrong with it. Ray's professional tech came out and ran the system checks. He then cleaned my system and explained to me that my system is protected by a breaker switch that cuts power when the air intake outside is clogged. That was all it took! All he charged was for coming out to check the system. Ray's motto is: "Honesty above Reproach". Beyond a doubt! 10 stars from me.

I have 3 Honeywell Fresh Air systems and want to install NEST. I called Nest many time and they told me my system is incompatible. I have googled and not much help. The old thermostat is Honeywell PC8900. Dov original quote was $95 for service call and $30 for each thermostat. I told him it will be more involved and should cost more. He came anyway. It took 3 hours for him to figures out. All 3 thermostats didnt show any errors. The heat didnt come on. I called and he came back less than 20 mins since he was nearby. He told me he figured out why. Instead connecting to tue relay board je needs to connect directly to tue units. Took him 5 minutes for each unit and it is working. I paid him 3 hours ofnhis time which is $300 and it worth it. Next customer will be easier since he knows what to do now. I had other people came by. They said they can do it. They hooked up 4 wires and thought that was it. I told them it is not that easy for my systems. They went to tue attic to check out the units and sais too many wires too complicated.

Ricky from Pell Air was a complete pleasure to work with. He is knowledgeable, very experienced as he has over 20 years in the industry, work was priced below competition where I went out for quotes, and he was prompt and on time for work. I had a coil go out in my home's air conditioning unit. He quickly diagnosed the problem, purchased the new coil, and within a couple days he came back to install it and refilled my system with coolant. Im very satisfied with his professionalism and quality of work. I highly recommend Pell Air.

I called Economy Systems to come give a second opinion of the ac vent inside my apartment. The issue I was having at the time was that I kept sneezing and was getting headaches nonstop and it seemed like it would get extra dusty in my apartment. I called the apartment maintenance crew to come see if the ac unit was broken but they said it was fine and showed me a clean air filter to prove that it was working fine. They even did this little trick with toilet paper after they switched on the air; they placed the toilet paper on the vent where the air filter was and it stayed there. I told Jose from Economy Systems what the maintenance crew told me so he went straight to the air filter. He asked if I changed the filter and I said never and I moved in almost a year ago. The look on his face was complete shock! He explained to me that the return on the apartment wasn’t even pulling any air and that is why the air filter looked brand new. He said that an air filter should at least be changed every 3 months and there is no way that the return on my apartment was working as it should if the air filter looked brand new. He said that’s why it was so dusty in the apartment and could also be the reason why I was getting headaches. He did the same thing with the toilet paper. But Jose explained that if the return was pulling like it should be then he wouldn’t have to place the toilet paper on the vent, it would just be sucked up to the vent. Then I remembered the maintenance man even had to catch it from falling the first few times he tried to do this trick. I moved from those apartments since then my headaches are gone and if it weren’t for Jose I would’ve renewed my lease at those horrible apartments. I haven’t had any troubles with my new apartments but if I ever need more help with air conditioning or heating advice or services I will give Economy Systems another call! Cesalee C.

Otilio and assistant traveled the distance to my home. When they arrived they got right to work assessing the situation. With scoping equipment and sheer determination Otilio and assistant removed a particularly difficult and embedded bird's nest and corresponding birds from our exhaust duct. He then set out to instal dryer vent cap and replace some duct. Needless to say we are grateful and appreciative and would use their services again.

I was in a major pinch, when my AC failed in the middle of summer. Temps outside were almost 100 degrees. I called several different companies and couldn’t get any of them out soon enough. Those that did show up, their pricing was outrageously high! Dallas Air Conditioning was not only prompt, but the pricing was awesome! When their service guys arrived, (on time), they look and presented themselves with total professionalism and they took the time to answer all my questions and concerns. Glad to know there are companies out there that care about their customers the way this company does. Wouldn’t hesitate to use them again! F. Dalton

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
