Mondragon Mechanical replaced a 2 ton Trane AC system in our house. Jorge Mondragon came to inspect the old system and gave us a free estimate. Jose Mondragon, Fabricio, and two helpers came to replace the old system. Jose Mondragon inspected the job site and planned the ways to move and remove parts and then went to the City of Plano to apply for a permit. Fabricio and two helpers put protecting cloth on the floor and started to replace condenser outside, coil and gas furnace in the attic. Fabricio and two helpers are efficient and the quality of work is good. The job was finished in one day. The City of Plano passed the inspection the next day. Jose Mondragon registered the new system with Trane to obtain the warranty for us. Jose Mondragon and Jorge Mondragon understand the payment of 90% of contract price upon completion of the job and 10% Required Retainage per Texas Property Code Section 53.101 on the 31st day after the job is completed. They conduct business professionally and things are done properly and according to the promised schedule.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a safe consultation or appointment with an HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by comparing technicians in your area in an online search. Message or call technicians to ask whether they can perform a consultation over the phone or even over a video call. This way, they can assess the problem without increasing the risk of virus transmission by visiting your house.

If it turns out the service is essential, you’ll need to follow CDC guidelines as well as local government guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

How can I find out if an HVAC technician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Currently, governments on both the federal and local levels are updating guidelines on what qualifies as an essential service. To see whether an HVAC technician is considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, check your city or state’s government website.

For federal guidelines, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors during the crisis. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an HVAC technician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a technician for an HVAC repair or installation project, practice current social distancing guidelines. This may require remaining outside while the technician works or ensuring the technician can work in a sectioned-off area or outbuilding.

Comply with social distancing guidelines while the technician is performing work. Do not make physical contact with technicians, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, sanitize all involved spaces and surface and pay using a digital platform instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for central air conditioning services?

The use of digital payment platforms -- like Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and Square Cash -- is common among air conditioning technicians. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is improving the adoption of these platforms as a means of helping social distancing.

As you compare local air conditioning technicians online, contact them to see if they’ll accept digital payments. Also, discuss strategies for completing the job while complying with safety guidelines for reducing the risk of exposure.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

Within 10 minutes of posting, Harold contacted me and agreed to come look at my condenser. He quickly identified the problems on my old unit and fixed them at a reasonable price within an hour. He even offered me a surprisingly low estimate on installing a new system. I found a new go-to guy for my future HVAC needs. I would highly recommend you give Harold a call if you need an honest, reliable and reasonably priced HVAC technician.

Mondragon Mechanical were a dream to work with. After receiving a bloated quote from a large HVAC & Plumbing company, I turned to Thumbtack. Mondragon answered and was able to provide a quote from just from pictures, at my request. That saved me from missing extra at work. The team arrived on time, took care of replacing a leaking A/C handler the next day, without rush charges. The price was very reasonable and they left the work area clean. I will use Mondragon, again. And highly recommend their serbices.

Jorge was very helpful. He came out for a quote on a new HVAC system but took the time to look at my current condenser and furnace. He found my condenser had no freon. He filled it up and I'm getting some relief from the heat. He went out of his way to help me and I appreciate it. I need to replace my furnace soon and I will be calling Jorge for the job. He's very professional and honest. 5 star from me. I would recommend him if you need a replacement or service.

I had a problem with my air conditioning late on a Friday night and reached out on here. I got a reply within minutes and was able to get someone out to my house that night. Unfortunately, I still was having some problems on Saturday morning but Shawn was very quick to respond to my message and immediately came back over to finish fixing the problem, without charging me anything additional. Not only did Shawn just fix the problem, he walked me through everything he was doing step by step and explained what he was doing and why. The prices were very fair but the professionalism was top notch. Will definitely use this company again with any future HVAC problems.

Mondragon did a great job with my HVAC system replacement. They showed up quickly and on time and did the job for a great value price. I have a nice new Trane system and my house is ice cold. They drew a city of FW permit and did all the work the right way--and they followed up when the city was flaky about coming out to my house. My only complaints are 1) that Jose Luis wasn't there when the work was being performed and 2) that the initial install crew didn't fully flush out the old copper tubing, so it shut itself off within 24 hours of installation. To Mondragon's credit, as soon as I called he had a guy back at my house to flush the pipes again and get it all up and running, and it has been fine ever since. Still, it was a bit of a bummer... Bottom line: great value, great service, great work--I'd definitely recommend and hire Mondragon again.
