Amy and John were able to give us excellent advice on the very first meeting. In less than a week we have already seen improvement in our dog's behavior with using the tools and suggestions they provided.

We love the joy and excitement of our Labrador puppy, but we were at our wits end with her out of control behavior. JR visited our home and assessed our puppy's behavior. He shared his philosophy and explained how he could help. After a week of training, we couldn't believe it was our dog. She was really excited for my visit but wasn't jumping up at me. Then she walked calmly on a leash, heeling by my side. By the end of her training, she was responding to the here command at a park and my mind was blown! We are thrilled with our new dog and having a place to board her when we need to leave town. Thanks JR and Diane!

It is my pleasure to write a review for Nick as well as, give him the highest recommendation as a trainer. Nick has worked with my two German Shepherds for almost a year now. Nick is not only a very competent trainer, he is professional, empathetic and shows how much he cares for your pups overall needs and your needs as an owner. Working with Nick over the past year results in your confidence as an owner, as well as, your dog's confidence. I brought a 12 week old pup and a 4 year old GS to him and the results were two amazing dogs. Not only does your dog get trained, you get trained to be in control of your dog's behavior. My dogs get so excited every time they see NIck...they have definitely bonded with him and trust him. I can't say enough about Nick as a person, trainer and friend. I would never hesitate to give a recommendation in his training abilities. The biggest compliment I can give, is his training abilities are priceless.

We are so happy with the results from our 2 week training for our dogs. Justin absolutely changed our dogs behavior. We can take them for walks at ease not worried if they will run away, try to fight, or go crazy somehow. We walk with them by our side anywhere without a leash and they behave amazing now

Myself, my family and our pets have been customers of Tri-County K9 Academy for over 12 years. Whether our dogs are just starting obedience training, are working out for a dog trial, if we have a pet we have a behavior issue we need help with, or if I need assistance with my Service Dog, both Darryl and Tammy have been patient, excellent instructors and their daughters are great helpers. The environment at Tri-County K9 is set up to be safe, educational and rewarding for both animals and humans. They have watched over several of our dogs when we have had to leave town on short notice and we have always come home to happy, clean dogs that you can just tell had a well rounded fun time. Tri-County K9 Academy is an excellent experience for all whether you are training with your own dog, having your dog trained, adopting one of the many dogs rescued and rehabbed at Tri-County, needing boarding, or becoming a better dog owner. Tri-County K9 Academy should be your first stop for all your K9 needs.

Michael is the dog whisperer! I rescued Julie from the Houston SPCA on July 22nd after getting her home we quickly looked at each other like what have we gotten ourselves into? This pound puppy is cra cra! She was an owner surrender then adopted and quickly returned to the shelter because “she was to hyper” my husband and I made a promise to Julie that she was a good girl deep inside and we wouldn’t give up until we helped her find that good dog behavior we both just knew she had it in her! We took her to the vet and put her on m do for her sever anxiety issue that helped she calmed down but she was still clueless to any basic commands. I decided to look for a trainer to work with Julie for the behavior and anxiety issues we were seeing. I found Stealth K9 and contacted him asking about the cost for board and train. His quote was hundreds cheaper than the rest and his reviews were great he was very responsive I hired him right away! He came and picked Julie up the same day Within 4 hours of reaching out for help. When he arrived Julie did not like him at all because she didn’t know him, she actually bit him out of fear within minutes of him meeting her, that didn’t phase him at all! He was persistent with her and before he even left the house with Julie he had her healing next to him on the leash! He was there for less than 30 min. My husband was blown away. I get daily updates on Julie but after only 3 days of training he sent me a video of Julie’s progress I was in shock completely blown away. Julie loved him she was 100% fixated on him! She was already doing sit stay, heal sit and she was doing it with major noise distractions. He was using positive reinforcement by pet and praise no treats I love this style! I want my dog to perform her commands all the time not only for food. Michael and his team of trainers work day and night training the dogs. Julie has had multiple different trainers all day long so she is taught to take the commands from everyone not just 1 person she has shown no further aggression not even with new trainers she hasn’t worked with yet or doesn’t know. There aren’t enough words to express how great everyone has been with my Julie girl! I am so grateful that I found Michael and he is making it possible for me to fulfill our promise to Julie that we will never give up on her or take her back to the shelter we promised to get her the help she needs and we absolutely have.

Gwen is very knowledgeable about animals, she knew when my dog looked like it was feeling sick and called me right away! She even tried to cheer it up giving it a ride in her car. When I got home, I brought it to the vet, and now my dog is feeling much better! She also pet-sits my parrot inside, and my neighbor's horse. She's trustworthy and has a lot of experience with all kinds of animals. She makes me feel safe to entrust the animals in her care.

Tricia was a blessing training our new dog. We found a stray tied to a lamp post in our neighborhood. We had to help the dog so we took him in. He had been abused and Tricia help us. When we first go Bear he was very frightened and peed in the house. After her instructions, which we carried out to a T, he became an excellent dog. It took some work but it was well worth it. I would use Tricia again for any of my animal training or behavior needs. She also does boarding which I will use in the future.

We highly recommend Terry. Our dog, Tango was a challenge for us, jumping and pulling on the leash, we couldn’t even have people over without her going crazy. We knew we need to call a trainer but most use either shock collars or treats and I wanted someone who could just understand my dog and show us how to train her without bribery or shocking her. So I saw Terrys website and called. Terry is excellent with Tango. He explained why she does the things she she does and gave us LOGICAL solutions for her behavior problems. Now we can enjoy Tango and not feel overwhelmed by her! Terry gave us a companion. My only regret is not calling him sooner!

I can not say enough about how AWESOME Sheena is when it comes to training your dog. We have a Cane Corso and she is the best. I love her climb command. Several times I have had a contractor or someone come in and they had no ideal she was even there. One guy asked me if she was real because she had been so still and quiet. I can have a house full of kids running around and if I put her in a down command or climb she never leaves that command. I never knew how great it is to have a well behaved dog. Shenzi walks so well on her leash heeling perfectly. If you are having any issue with your dog or need any kind of training. I highly recommend Sheena. I took Shenzi in to be groomed at a pet store and everyone in there was complimenting on how well behaved she is. The owner wanted to know who my trainer was so she could send some of her clients to her. No matter where we go I always get compliments on her behavior. Love Love Love what she has done for Shenzi and our family. Thank You Sheena!!!

We loved working with Kasia - she was sensitive to our dog's needs and her particular behavioral issues. We felt that she was always very professional and genuinely cared about the progress our dog made with each session. Kasia takes the long-view on dog training and really makes sure that things stick and emphasizes the "homework" that is necessary to work with your dog in the beginning. We saw major progress in our dog's behavior, self-confidence, and reaction time within just a few weeks; in five weeks our "rescue dog" quickly became our best friend.

As soon as I met Kirk it was obvious that he truly has a special understanding of dog behavior. My dog is normally very nervous, anxious and reactive with strangers, but Kirk was calm and confident in his first interactions with my dog, Sophie and was able to gain control of the situation instantaneously. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, Kirk was very personable and patient with both Sophie and me. His experience and knowledge of dog behavior is apparent and he does a great job of addressing problem situations by empowering you with the knowledge, the tools and most importantly, the confidence to do it on your own. It has only been a few days from our initial session but I am very pleased with the results thus far. I am much more confident in my ability to manage Sophie’s less than ideal behaviors (barking at the door, reacting on leash at other dogs, etc.) This in turn has had a noticeably positive effect on her behavior and energy. I look forward to continue working with Kirk and continuing our progress. I absolutely recommend Kirk if you’re looking for insight into dog behavior and are seeking assistance with your own pup.

Tammy has been walking our family dog for about 2 weeks now and Joshua(my dog) and I have grown to love Tammy. We are beginning to seeing improvements in our dog's behavior - he is more calm. I like that Tammy checks in with me after the walks and gives me highlights of their activities for the day. My experience with Tammy have been very pleasant and I am so happy to have found her services and she is someone that I can trust.

        About

I have been a canine behavior specialist in business since 1982. While much of my work currently is with working canines, I have begun to take on private clients here in Houston. My specialties are all forms of aggression, anxiety-related disorders and rescue dog integration issues. I see clients in their homes or for less severe issues such as socialization and obedience, I offer a reduced rate if customers come to me in the Hobby Airport area.

          About

It is undoubted, dogs are in love with their owners as the owners are with their dogs. The question is: Who is the master? I have been studying primal behavior for just over fifteen years, and from it I have learned binary (most basic) communication. Understanding how to talk to your dog is the most assured way to make him happy in your home. I correct the following: * Aggressive and threatening behavior (Yes, I do handle Pit Bulls) * High prey drive (Yes, it can be corrected) * Fighting * Fence fighting * Incessant barking * Food protectiveness * Territorial-ism * Obsession * Begging * Separation anxiety * Destructiveness * Pulling on the leash * Lagging behind * Fear or terrified Behavior * Running away * Over excited behavior * Jumping I teach communication on the dog's level so that he trains himself. You will see results immediately, with lasting results within two visits (contingent upon client participation). References are available upon request. It is never too late to start.

            About

The first thing I do is a consultation with you in your home, at your convenience. In the consultation, I will go over what you are telling the dog by certain things you are doing, what the dog is telling you by certain things they are doing, health, nutrition, any and all questions, concerns, and problems you are having with this dog, a dog you had before, or someone else's. I don't care. The more information I can get into you, the better educated I can make you, and the better you make decisions down the road. You are the one with the dog 24/7, not me. The consultation normally takes about 2 to 3 hours and costs $200. After that, if you want to go on to the beginning class, you can do that one of two ways. Either way, you are guaranteed results. The board and train is a minimum of 2 weeks. If it takes longer, it doesn't cost any more. You are paying for results. By the time the dog is done, it will pay attention, respect proper authority, have self-control, lay down through any and all kinds of distractions, stay on a loose leash through any and all kinds of distractions, and do curbing (which are boundaries the dog will not cross until being told it is okay). The cost of this is $800 per dog. When we bring the dogs back, we will go over about half of what the dog knows. Then a week later, we will come back and go over the rest. The other way is we come to your home at your convenience. That is twice a week for 6 weeks, or as long as it takes, and the cost of that is $1100 for the first dog and half price for any thereafter. Anytime you have a question, you will call, so we can get you an answer, whether 1 week or 10 years down the road with this dog or any other dog you have. The big part is, I am going to help you understand where the problems are coming from, how it got started, so we can keep this or any other negative from coming back in the future, as you will know and see things before they ever happen in the future. If you feel you get enough after the consultation, then that is all you do also. Call with any questions that you may have. I also bring one of my dogs with me, so you can see the product that you are buying. I guarantee what I do, and I have never found a dog that couldn't be trained. Please feel free to call with any questions.

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

            • What type of training methods do you use?
            • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
            • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
