Friendly and courteous service. Very hard working team. Very willing to take suggestions and requests in to account. They totally transformed my side yard by adding a brick and flagstone sidewalk and a decorative stone bed to prevent erosion below eve of the roof. Also, added a 3 inlet underground storm water drainage system that takes the rain water to the alley and drains water into the alley and adjusted grading in the side yard so water would drain away from my house. In addition, did a fall clean up and removed weeds, vines, dying shrubs and crepe myrtle trees in my back yard. Two of my neighbors liked his work on the side yard and sidewalk and asked for his business card. My main comment on improvement would be that Eberardo needs to provide a more complete raking and removing of the fallen leaves when doing a fall cleanup service. He seemed a little rushed at the end of the cleanup. Overall, I will probably hire him again. Thanks! JKR in Richardson, TX

Santo and his team were absolutely amazing! Not only was his price competitive but his work was phenomenal. He built out our flower bed around the pool and did stone and brick work around our house and trees. His thoroughness resulted in creating a drainage system to enable the longevity of our plants.

The landscaping exceeded my expectations! Gracie designed it all - front yard, side yards and backyard. She made suggestions for all the plants, bushes, rock and flagstones. Jordan was meticulous in his planting, laying the stone and removing all debris. I couldn't be more satisfied and I know I have the nicest looking yard on my street!

The experience with 380 flooring was very professional. Frank came out for a consultation to quote us for wood flooring, stone fireplace and marble tile. We meet with many other contractors and felt confident in choosing 380 flooring to complete our project. We were undergoing a whole home renovation and had to push back our flooring installation and through the process Frank was very patient and understanding. On the day of installation his team showed up when they said they would. Their lead was Joel, which is extremely polite and experienced. Overall, we are very happy with our floors and fireplace and would recommend 380 flooring to friends and family. Thanks Guys!

Lowell did a great job installing laminate flooring on a rental home I bought. I needed the laminate floors installed but the flooring company who supplied the materials did not have a crew immediately available. Lowell essentially matched the flooring company's pricing and did a better job than the flooring company who did work for me before. He leveled off the uneven floor spots where foundation repair was done, avoided using T-moldings on the transition to the bedroom door, indented the laminate floors under the stone fireplace and the living room baseboards. Although it is not part of the install service, he volunteered to lend me his hand truck to move out a large freezer out of the house which made moving it much easier. He is a very trustworthy person I would not hesitate recommending and hiring him again!

Jose and his team installed a stone wall around our flower beds, as well as stone around our front yard trees. They also planted flowers and different shrubs in our flower beds and completely changed the look of our front yard! The stone work is beautiful, the flowers add so much bright color. Jose gave us amazing prices- you definitely can't get this quality work anywhere else for the price he gave us! Not only were we impressed with his work, but he was so personable and friendly, he was so easy to work with. He took our vision and made it come to life, and now we have a friend who we can say we will be doing business with for a long time in regards to landscaping. We have now hired him to mow our lawn bi-weekly since he did such a great job. (He also offered unbeatable prices for lawn mowing compared to the other landscaping company we were using). I would highly recommend using Vasquez Landscaping! Two Thumbs up!

Developed and implemented a plan, installing a new flowerbed in the backyard SW corner and along the back property line. Extensive planting, mulching and replacing all metal borders in front and back with cut stone and placing ornamental rock around 3 big trees and 2 shrubs. Adjusting irrigation to ensure total coverage of the new plants. Larry and Curtis were very helpful and cooperative and the crew did a good job. The price was reasonable and within my budget. The job was completed on time. At this point I am not sure that some of the plants will make it, but with a 1 year warranty I am confident that this will be dealt with if need be. Bottomline: I would use them again and recommend them to others.

I really love the work he did with my fireplace. I needed it demolished and to save a few stones if possible but not only did he save more than a few stones he showed up on time, he is very easy to work with, he listens, and he cleaned up afterwards. I would hire him in a heartbeat. I have a couple of other things around the house that I need done and he is the guy I'm calling. Thank you!

This is been a good experience from the first time we spoke. He and his team of all English speaking people did a great job installing the sprinklers in my front and back yard. He also put some deconstructed Granite on the side of my house cuz it just makes it look better and that was all included in the price and I know I have a great system. Every time I called him he responded the same day if I texted him or email him he was bonded the same day the day after the period the day after the installation one of the sprinklers wasn't working properly he came over within 20 minutes and turn the water off and said that he would come back to fix it cuz he was on his way to another job. He was thorough all of his guys were cordial friendly have a good sense of humor. I think what impressed me most was the fact that he brought like 6 guys with him he brought enough people to do the job. Too many times I get some hire someone for a job and it's just the owner and some help her and things get missed this was just very professional all the way around and friendly Giuseppe explain everything to me having an I have a lot of question because I've never had a sprinkler system before he answered every one it's all good got to be a reason they have all five star reviews my yard is one of those reasons.

Brandon was very responsive from the time he sent his quote to finishing the job. If there was a delay of any kind he was always sure to communicate that with me. There were many selections of stone to choose from and he helped me pick the one that looked better for my idea. Bronson and his team came and finished the work in a timely manner. The Valiant Outdoor Designs team is professional and provides quality work. I'd recommend them to anyone and will be doing work with them in the future!

Martinez Masonry & Landscaping did a wonderful job building a stone mailbox, flower bed stone borders and repairing brickwork on the house and patio wall. Silvino is a hard worker who takes pride in his craft. We have received so many compliments on the work Silvino did and so many inquiries as to who did our mailbox and stonework. I cannot recommend Martinez highly enough. And I encourage anyone who needs masonry work to contact Martinez Masonry & Landscaping. You will not be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
