Carlos and his band made our event really (anniversary) special. Carlos called us to find out all the details and order of the event and his music was fantastic. But, he really went above and beyond. When it was time for a couple of our dearest friends to wish us a happy anniversary, he even helped us with the microphones so their toasts could be heard well by all the guests. Our guests really loved the music, and especially the variety they played. Thank you Carlos and band. You guys were amazing.

We hired Chris Knox, Sr. to play music for my husband's Air Force retirement party. Chris and his lovely wife are kind and humble people. They visited the venue, a private home, in advance (at no charge or obligation) to get a feel for the place, select a place for him to perform, and confirm the music set list, which he e-mailed in advance. Chris himself is retired from the Air Force and a former member of Tops in Blue, a touring performance ensemble made up of active duty members of the United States Air Force formed in 1953. Chris plays gigs as a member of The Azul Experience, a three-piece band. However, for our party, he played electric guitar and sang with a backing musical soundtrack. He arrived early and set up unobtrusively as we prepared for the party. He played well timed songs for the surprise and a touching tribute for my husband's career in the Air Force. The set list was quite varied and included everything from Kool & The Gang to Steely Dan. Everyone LOVED the music and he stayed after his performance to just hang out with us. The fee was extremely reasonable. If you need a fun musician at a fair price, look no further!

I had been a fan of Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express for over 10 years. When my daughter asked about entertainment for her wedding reception, I showed her a video of Terry's past work and her mind was made up. I called Terry on his cellphone as he was about to go on-stage at an Oktoberfest in Oklahoma. He emailed me back at 2:00 that same morning. Thus began a great relationship with Terry and his band. He met with my daughter and me on several occasions and carried out every detail we had planned for the reception. (Plus he added several "surprise" treats of his own) He's just a plain great guy to work with, and an outstanding showman. Numerous guests cornered me during the reception and said, "This is the best wedding dance and the best performance we've ever been to. Where did you find this talent?" I highly recommend him for weddings, Oktoberfests, business conferences, and anywhere you want to spend several hours laughing and having a fun time. And if you're looking for traditional or contemporary wedding ceremony music, Terry can provide that too. He will provide you a show of a lifetime!

I run a variety dance band called The Sophisticates based in Austin, TX. Philip and his techs from Head Water have provided consistent, professional service for every gig we've had the last two years. I have dealt with many sound technicians in my 30 years in this business, believe me when I say Philip Ramirez is a rising star in this industry!

Beau is an exceptional guitar instructor. He was quick to respond to any questions I had and arrived on time to my lesson. I don't have much experience playing guitar, but I feel we covered a lot of ground during the first lesson. He helped boost my confidence in playing and motivated me to practice during the time between lessons. His pricing was very reasonable and he was able to accommodate to my schedule and location. I look forward to more lessons to come and would highly recommend Beau.

I met Zack many years ago and began to receive drum lessons from him. Having no prior knowledge or conceptual understanding, he slowly and patiently introduced me to the drums. Everything was explained in an easy to understand manner and as my skills progressed his lessons were more in depth. Everything from basic music notation and theory to keeping time and advanced drum patterns were covered. Very easy to get along with and makes you feel comfortable at your skill level. Never any judgements and plenty of positive reinforcement. Best drum lessons I've taken!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

        • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
        • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
        • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
