Rona immediately started training ME when she walked in the door and met my dog. She obviously knows and understands dog behavior and what dogs expect from their humans. I learned so much in just a short one-hour lesson that I know will be very beneficial towards an improved relationship with my fur baby. I will certainly schedule more lessons as we continue to master the techniques Rona taught us.And, Rona is very professional without being preachy. She crams a lot of information in an hour.

Taylor is a professional in every way. She came prepared for the problem and offered and demonstrated techniques that worked immediately. It was really an eye opener. Her confidence with and in the dogs made a world of difference in their behavior. We were having problems with our dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior towards other dogs. By the end of the session, we had both dogs inside the dog park, showing no aggression. She followed up with a written synopsis of the problem and steps to take for behavior change. I would highly recommend Taylor. She has a complete grasp of dogs and their behavior, and is not afraid to " think outside the box" to problem solve. She is a pleasure to work with, and dogs respond very positively to her!

I highly recommend Kenny! He is very personable and professional. Communication was outstanding. Our dog’s behavior has vastly improved after 5 sessions, and we now have the tools to continue working with him after our final session. Thanks, Kenny!

We had our 2 dogs (pit/lab mix & pit) go thru the board and train at Aloha. What a change it made in their behavior. No more bolting out the door or jumping on the couch and my favorite, no more jumping on the back door trying to get in without first waiting for the command. Kevin is very knowledgable about dog behavior and provided great feedback. Of course we will still need to continue to work with our dogs but without Kevin and the two week board & training we wouldn't be a far along as we are now. So very pleased we found Kevin and we will continue to use Aloha Canine for boarding when we take vacation. Beautiful facility - Kevin is the best... Karen & Dustie

I've had the pleasure of working with Christie both recently and over the last several years. She is an excellent trainer! She has saved many shelter dogs that would have otherwise had a very unhappy ending. She is professional, punctual, very knowledgeable about dog behavior, and her training program has wonderful results. I look forward to working with her for years to come! I would highly recommend her services if are looking for a trainer in general or if your dog has aggression issues.

We have been super pleased with Tiffany and her reliability. She is so easy to work with and helpful in a pinch with her "can-do" attitude. She is a genuine animal lover, and our dogs are always happy to see her. She's very responsive, and we've been so glad to have found her for home care instead of kennels!

Daniel has been great with our dogs. He’s given us a great foundation to create better behaved dogs that has been very successful. Our friends and family have commented on the changes they’ve seen in our dogs already. Daniel doesn’t treat the behavior but instead shows us how to change the behavior from the source of the problem. He’s very patient and kind and I would recommend him to anyone looking for help with their dogs.

Samantha and Julie were great! We contacted Premier Pet TLC as the first on our list of possible sitters and we didn't have to look any further! From our first meet & greet, Samantha went out of her way to gain the trust of our loving fur babies. We had them come twice a day to walk our dog, change litter, and feed everybody, and stay overnight for 4 nights so our animals wouldn't get lonely. Samantha went above and beyond with our youngest cat, Toby, who has confidence issues. By the end of her stay, our normally very shy boy was coming out of his safe place to investigate and show her some love at dinner time. Their online portal is fantastic to use and makes it easy to schedule future visits. Through the portal, we were sent progress reports after each visit, which included photos and updates on how everybody was doing. We even got special Mother's Day greeting photos from each of our adorable pets! We loved Premier Pet TLC so much, that it was a joy to accept Samantha's offer for a behavioral session with Toby to help work on his kitty confidence, and we very much look forward to it. We will now always recommend Premier Pet TLC to anybody who asks, and if we could give an even higher rating we absolutely would. If you're looking for a caring sitter to take care of your pets while you're away, there is no better choice!

I contacted Jenne to help us introduce a rescued kitten to her two older grumpy brothers. I have not enough words to thank Jenne for her professionalism, patience, guidance and overall help. She not only guided us step by step but she always gave us excellent advise and always explained the reasons why the cats were acting in a certain way. She has gone above and beyond for us and I would not hesitate to consult her again. The peace of mind that I had knowing I could call/text an expert like her is priceless. I recommend her tremendously to anyone who wants to be successful introducing new cats or having problems with any cat's behavior. Thank you Jenne!

Upon the first meeting with Hilary, I felt that she had a really great attitude and willingness to do whatever it took to make my dog feel comfortable. Super Big Plus...She was able to start right away, which took a lot of stress off of my mind. She's also very easy to work with for any adjustments to the daily/weekly walking schedule. I have a lot of gratitude for her choice to work with animals and it gives me peace of mind, that she knows her stuff.

The services Corinna provides are invaluable. My fiancé and I adopted a 1 year old Shetland Sheepdog, Roy, half a year ago and we have been struggling with his behavioral issues on a daily basis ever since. As responsible dog parents, we immediately signed Roy up for a 6 week training session at Petco. While it was a great start, it did not fix our main problem of him barking and lunging at strangers. A few weeks later, being at a desperate state of mind, we signed him up for 10 more training sessions with a different trainer that came highly recommended by a peer. Thousands of dollars later and we did not see the results. We began to lose hope. We finally decided to give Roy to Corinna for board and train. I was hesitant at first because I wanted to be the one to do the training so Roy can learn to listen to me. However, Corinna explained that everything Roy will learn is transferable. Corinna was very patient and answered all of our questions to make us feel comfortable with the process. She even sent us photos and videos of Roy and the progress they were making every couple of days. We were in complete disbelief to see what Corinna has done. She completely transformed Roy from an anxious and stressed out dog into an obedient, happy dog. She has done the unimaginable in just 2 weeks. We saw significant improvement after just a few days and the progress that other trainers were not able to achieve in months. When it was time for us to take Roy back, Corinna spent hours teaching us how to speak/interact with Roy. She was completely accurate in saying that everything she has taught Roy is transferable. We are finally able to take Roy out for long walks stress free! If you want to enjoy your dog sign him up for classes with Corinna! She is a magician :)

Good job to Amy!! She's been running my dogs off and on for the past 8 months and I love the fact that I don't have to worry about them while at work, or if I take a short vacation out of town. Boxer and Tina get plenty of exercise when I'm away -- twice a day! It's that time of the year for me -- VERY busy -- and it's one less thing that I have to worry about if I'm on a business trip. I also have Amy come over to walk them around the noon hour so they're not inside for 9-10 hrs while at work. The best thing is that both Boxer and Tina seem to be more relaxed when I come home from work. They're behaving much better in the apartment and when I take them on walks! It's a win-win with less stress on them, and me!! Amy is GREAT with both of my dogs and really cares about the well being of animals in general! If you're in need of pet services -- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AMY'S JOGGIN DOGS!!

I found Julie while I was exploring the variety of things (shows, events, competitions) my dog could experience. I was referred to her for instruction in what is called Nosework (a fun search and scenting activity). Through this experience Julie has introduced me to methods of training that have developed my relationship with my dog I didn’t know was possible. Buddy (my 70 lb rescued mutt) and I are growing every day in our understanding of each other. I can better understand his behavior cues and He understands what I’m asking of Him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
