He took the time to really listen to my concerns and issues with the house and systematically set out to get everything up to code. I would highly recommend Steven for any level of electrical work... Wow! These guys are amazing! Professional, timely, efficient, and excellent communication about the project.(the likes of which I have never experienced with home repair pros in all of my 68 years). They did an excellent job removing my old fence and replacing it. AND NO DRAMA! They told me what they were going to do and did it. Also clean - it was like they hadn't even been there and yet, I had a beautiful new fence. Thanks, Jon and Steve✨

Amazing, amazing, amazing! I ended up breaking a bedroom window and was so worried about getting it fixed. Glass works responded quickly, was able to just look at the pictures, and he gave the most reasonable price. As for the day of repair, he arrived on time, and was in and out. What more could you ask for?! Would definitely recommend.

THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!! I am so happy I hired Davis Electric to mount my TV. Their price was very reasonable and once I truly saw the value of their work I would do it all over again. I have a wire hiding decor thing I am going to use, but i need to get a longer AT&T cord first, so disregard the cords in the pic. Since I live in an apartment I didn’t want the cords dropped because I don’t want to deal with repairing the wall when I move out. They were very, very professional and kind when they got to my apartment and promptly completed the job. 5 stars!!!! I highly recommend them and will definitely rehire them when and I need something else done! I will gladly be a reference for them if they ever need one.

I hired Steve to do several small repair jobs around the house. He was very professional and did excellent work. He rebuilt two cabinet drawers, patched and textured dry wall, sealed the garage doors so rodents can no longer get in, and repaired window sills that my dog had chewed up and now look like new! I plan on hiring Steve in the future to complete some larger house repair jobs now that I have seen the superior quality of his workmanship.

I am so glad we chose Chris as our electrician. Chris was punctual, professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He identified and diagnosed several problems (one of them ended up being a major fire hazard!) with our house’s electrical system in about 10 mins. He showed me what he had found and thoroughly explained his recommendations and kept me informed. Chris had the issues resolved within 1.5 hours of our scheduled appointment time, including a trip to the store for supplies. The final price for the repairs was below his quoted price. To top it off, Chris was great with our overly friendly pets 😊 I will be recommending Chris to all of our friends and family in the area, and will definitely be calling him for any future electrical needs.

We needed some minor fence repair, as well as some work on our stone patio. David did an excellent job of explaining the needs and costs of each job. We really appreciated his patience and honesty in answering our questions. Quality of the work is great. The sealed patio looks amazing! He also provided us some design ideas for shade structures on the patio. Once we decide what we want to do, we will definitely call David.

Steven rocks. Amazing painter! We were having our home rent out and needed to freshen the interior. We never expected that our house would be made to look this new again. He was able to get the job done with utmost sincerity, and on short notice, without sacrificing quality. He went beyond just painting. He caught every detail to make the house shine. What struck me most was his sincere desire that I was happy with the final product. Indeed, I was. Full on 10/10 and FIVE STAR SERVICE for a very reasonable price. Thanks a lot, sir. I know who to contact now, he will be my man to go in future. God bless you, Steven.

In a world getting increasingly worse when it comes to hiring people and companies for service, especially when it comes to home repairs/labor etc, Sean is one of the few people who makes commitments and keeps them, delivers excellent high quality repairs, shows up on time, sticks to schedules, doesn’t “upsell” and stays affordable. 1000000% a pleasure to work with and fantastic work at a great price!

In addition, he has been instrumental in overseeing our plumbing renovations in that bathroom. We will be using his services from here on out for all of our plumbing needs.

Skill Construction is a wonderful company to work with. I have used them on a number of home repairs over the years- and have gladly referred them to both family and friends. Terry, the owner (with decades of consruction experience under his belt) is awesome. He thoroughly explains the scope of any job being undertaken- and readily addresses any concerns before and after a job is completed. His crew of guys (which some of them have been with him for years) is always timely and very courteous. A company that stands behind their work!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
