Mike and family at barks 5th Avenue have changed our life with our german shepard. She was wild and we thought we were going to have to give her away. There training gave our dog fina....another chance to be truly a house dog with manners. I can't thank them enough they are truly professional dog trainer. I would recommend them to everyone....my friend also had his dog trained there with the same results. Once again if you need a referral to call me that is not a problem

We have really enjoyed working with Nick May in our home and are very happy with the progress he has made with our pup. We still have several more sessions with him and look forward to working with him each week to meet our goals. I would recommend him to anyone who may need dog training for the puppy/dog.

Ty is excellent with dog training. Zeus just loved her from the minute she walked in the door and she taught us so much in just the first lesson that he is already well on the way to heeling perfectly and is so much calmer when we take him outside. She is so patient and understanding of dogs, it's like she speaks their language. We couldn't have asked for a better trainer. We would very highly recommend K9 to everybody who wants the best in dog training.

I had a doberman, Rose, that was a challenge to walk. She did not go out for walks. I found Come and Train It K9 and now Rose and I go for walks! John and Courtney really understood Rose and gave us the tools we needed to be successful. The team is extremely professional and genuinely wanted to make sure we were successful. I learned about my own shortcomings when it came to my with and toward Rose. I very much recommend Come and Train It K9 to anyone who has a dog with challenges. Rose can go out for walks now.....life is much better for her! Thank you John and team!

Paula communicated very well. My dog is very shy hand had some bad experiences with other groomers. Paula was very patient with my dog. She let me know that she wanted to try to make my dog not fear being groomed. When she completed the groom, my dog came out happy and looked great. Paula was professional and very kind. We look forward to working with her again. Thanks Paula for your dedication and kindness!

Barbara is great!! I would highly recommend her. She has taught me so much on how to have my dog listen to me and follow what I say. I have known Barbara for a 1 1/2 yrs. I first met her when she was an instructor at a pet store. Riley is my first dog and I thought he was only supposed to be a dog. I soon learned that I had no control over him. Walks were difficult with him pulling and trying to run after other dogs and people. Barbara showed me in easy steps how to get Riley to do what I asked like no jumping up on people or not pulling during walks, etc. After training classes ended I began to attend her agility for fun classes. It seems like every class I am learning something new about my dog and what he can do. I now have a dog that will listen to me (well most of the time ) and I am so proud of him. We are still a work in progress but I couldn't have done it without Barbara gentle teaching and encouragement.

Myself, my family and our pets have been customers of Tri-County K9 Academy for over 12 years. Whether our dogs are just starting obedience training, are working out for a dog trial, if we have a pet we have a behavior issue we need help with, or if I need assistance with my Service Dog, both Darryl and Tammy have been patient, excellent instructors and their daughters are great helpers. The environment at Tri-County K9 is set up to be safe, educational and rewarding for both animals and humans. They have watched over several of our dogs when we have had to leave town on short notice and we have always come home to happy, clean dogs that you can just tell had a well rounded fun time. Tri-County K9 Academy is an excellent experience for all whether you are training with your own dog, having your dog trained, adopting one of the many dogs rescued and rehabbed at Tri-County, needing boarding, or becoming a better dog owner. Tri-County K9 Academy should be your first stop for all your K9 needs.

Michael is the dog whisperer! I rescued Julie from the Houston SPCA on July 22nd after getting her home we quickly looked at each other like what have we gotten ourselves into? This pound puppy is cra cra! She was an owner surrender then adopted and quickly returned to the shelter because “she was to hyper” my husband and I made a promise to Julie that she was a good girl deep inside and we wouldn’t give up until we helped her find that good dog behavior we both just knew she had it in her! We took her to the vet and put her on m do for her sever anxiety issue that helped she calmed down but she was still clueless to any basic commands. I decided to look for a trainer to work with Julie for the behavior and anxiety issues we were seeing. I found Stealth K9 and contacted him asking about the cost for board and train. His quote was hundreds cheaper than the rest and his reviews were great he was very responsive I hired him right away! He came and picked Julie up the same day Within 4 hours of reaching out for help. When he arrived Julie did not like him at all because she didn’t know him, she actually bit him out of fear within minutes of him meeting her, that didn’t phase him at all! He was persistent with her and before he even left the house with Julie he had her healing next to him on the leash! He was there for less than 30 min. My husband was blown away. I get daily updates on Julie but after only 3 days of training he sent me a video of Julie’s progress I was in shock completely blown away. Julie loved him she was 100% fixated on him! She was already doing sit stay, heal sit and she was doing it with major noise distractions. He was using positive reinforcement by pet and praise no treats I love this style! I want my dog to perform her commands all the time not only for food. Michael and his team of trainers work day and night training the dogs. Julie has had multiple different trainers all day long so she is taught to take the commands from everyone not just 1 person she has shown no further aggression not even with new trainers she hasn’t worked with yet or doesn’t know. There aren’t enough words to express how great everyone has been with my Julie girl! I am so grateful that I found Michael and he is making it possible for me to fulfill our promise to Julie that we will never give up on her or take her back to the shelter we promised to get her the help she needs and we absolutely have.

Sarah is absolutely amazing! Where do I begin? As soon as you start speaking with Sarah you can immediately tell how much her profession means to her. It is clear that she is in it for the dogs and it’s obvious that she is doing exactly what she was meant to do. She will take the time to explain to you the reasons behind doing things which helps to give you a better understanding of the training and your dog. If you are looking for a dog trainer, I highly recommend Sarah!

Terry, the dog trainer, has been a great dog trainer. I have tried out many in and around the area where I live, and have never had any success. This time I am seeing successes that I never thought possible. My dog is making great strides. Yes, she has a long way to go, and so do I, but with Terry's help, I believe we are achieving that goal well. Terry is very professional, yet very down to earth, and will talk to you about what he wants you to do. He models everything for you, then he gives you the leash and lets you do the work with your dog. He offers good information and helps you to correct the areas in which you might be doing something wrong. He also seems to do so until he sees you are getting it right. He explains well, and he doesn't just say ok, now you do it. He observes closely and helps you. His work quality is tip top, and he is very responsive to the dog's needs as well as any needs the owner has in working with the dog. He knows what he is doing, and he knows how to teach people . Terry is rarely ever late, but if for some reason, he is going to be a few minutes late, he always calls me to let me know this. Value can mean one of two things to me. I always think of it in a monetary way first, and as far as the money that I have spent and am spending, I believe these lessons are a great price for the money. I think they are worth every penny I have put out for them. I think about not only being worth the money for the lessons, but when I think about it, this man drives all over the place, and the price is worth it for the 35 - 40 mi drive he makes to come help and teach me to teach my dog. I realize too, that he has expenses, and he has to pay for gasoline, so the monetary price I pay is definitely worth it. I really cannot express what kind of value Terry and the lessons exhibit on a teaching and content level. I think this is the most valuable thing I have learned in a long time. I cannot measure the value that the lessons have for my dog and me. I believe she feels like she has more structure, and I am feeling positive and excited , because I am learning to be her leader instead of the other way around. I am also feeling more respected by her. I am so happy that I found Always Faithful Dog Training and that I have Terry to help me and show me how to handle my dog !

Chelsea & Ty are professional dog trainers and lovers of all breeds. I wanted training provided in my own home in the circumstances and day-to-day situations encountered by my dog. Pugs can be stubborn to say the least and Modern K9s proved their integrity, quality, and ingenuity. They were eager to respond to questions or concerns at any time. I also sent my pug for a "refresher" when I had an extended trip. I think he came back home and thought home was a little boring. My dog was always eager to work with the trainers and they taught the two of us very well. I don't hesitate to recommend their service.

Britney has been my go-to trainer for the past year with all of our rescue dogs. She is very patient working with each other their personalities and we love the fact she uses positive reinforcement, not shock collars or anything of the sort other trainers quoted us using. She also has been helping guide us through the process of finding the right Service Dog prospect and owner-training legally. We definitely recommend her for all our dog training needs, whether in person or through Skype/Facetime when she's not in our area!

I can not say enough about how AWESOME Sheena is when it comes to training your dog. We have a Cane Corso and she is the best. I love her climb command. Several times I have had a contractor or someone come in and they had no ideal she was even there. One guy asked me if she was real because she had been so still and quiet. I can have a house full of kids running around and if I put her in a down command or climb she never leaves that command. I never knew how great it is to have a well behaved dog. Shenzi walks so well on her leash heeling perfectly. If you are having any issue with your dog or need any kind of training. I highly recommend Sheena. I took Shenzi in to be groomed at a pet store and everyone in there was complimenting on how well behaved she is. The owner wanted to know who my trainer was so she could send some of her clients to her. No matter where we go I always get compliments on her behavior. Love Love Love what she has done for Shenzi and our family. Thank You Sheena!!!

I used David's Dog Training for the training of our new puppy. When we first got our Miniature Schnauzer he was an absolute mess, jumping on guests, furniture, dragging us down the street, and uncontrollably excited all the time. After a 8 week session with David's Dog Training, he was controllable and walking (not pulling) on a leash. Most of his training, believe it or not, had more to do with us as the owners than with the dog. We were the ones who needed to step up and communicate with the dog. He is now content, controllable, sociable, and a very good boy. I honestly don't know what we would have done without his help. Thank you!

Randolph knows what he is talking about! I felt like he was very knowledgeable, understanding and really does care about dogs! I came to him for a consult and I left very impressed. He had great command of his own dog and seemed very comfortable with my own dog. He seems like a people person and a dog person! My dog has socialization issues with other dogs and I had trouble finding a trainer because he is considered a "giant breed". Randolph taught me a lot about the issues with my dog and presented me with different options for training (board and train & private sessions). My only issue is the cost. I will have to wait to begin training because the training will negatively affect my budget...more than expected.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
