First time ever using a dog grooming service & I'm completely sold on their services! Tianna arrived promptly & did a fantastic job! She was very gentle, kind & explained everything to me. I will most definitely be a returning customer! I even called my neighbor & had her come over to see what services are offered thru you guys. Plus you scheduled on a Sunday! That speaks volumes for us who are busy during the week. Thanks again! Will highly recommend your business!

Amazing! Very beneficial for my 5YO boxer, he went into the 3 week training (being shy and a bit rebellious) and came out a very well behaved dog. I'm very grateful I found them and very thankful to Oscar for the training he's provided not only to my baby but also to me. Highly recommend Barks 5th Avenue. Great experience from the first time I requested info to the time the hand over happened. Grooming and daycare was also very good. Chowder will definitely be visiting daycare there and next is puppy training for my boxer. Old dogs can learn new tricks!

Bow Wows is awesome. They are a mobile grooming service which helps me avoid having to put my kitties through the stress of having to be transported. About the experience - Kim and Tracy were great! They were accommodating to my concerns about how distressful the removal of fur matts may have been to my cat. I was amazed at how quickly they were able to remove it. I had tried to remove it myself over a period of several days but they were able to remove it within 10-15 minutes, without harming my fur baby. And they were able to give her a fanny trim, something my vet wouldn't do without sedating her first. There is something to be said about going to the professionals for different services. I love my vet but they aren't professional groomers. I will leave the medical part to the vet and the grooming to Bow Wows! I won't post a picture and spare you from having to look at a picture of my cats behind. Lol

Mobile grooming is more expensive but worth the money for the convenience. Wicket looked great and was not stressed afterwards. The grooming took about 2 hrs so being an older girl, she was pretty tired and limping a bit probably due to standing so long. I'll request a shorter or express service next time to make it easier on her. Thanks so much!

Heidi and Jason were great! They came in on time, got to work on my little princess who has extreme anxiety when going to groomer and vet. She was very happy to be in her own yard and with her new friends! They did a great job on her and cleaned up and were done in an hour! She was happy and more importantly clean and shaved in her usually Teddy bear cut. Will definitely use Cherie’s Mobile Grooming again! I’m so happy that my Sookie can have a “Spa Day” (at home) that is convenient, and more relaxing! Thank you! Corinne & Michael

First time I had tried a mobile grooming service, and I was pleasantly surprised in the way our 2 beagles looked and smelled great, without the time consuming trips to and from a grooming salon. Was very happy with the service provided by Heather and will definitely call her again!

First grooming went well, I have a timid dog and he did great. Dana listened attentively to both me and my dog in making a game plan for the grooming and making us comfortable. This nervous mommy arrived back to pick up her baby to find a beautifully groomed and calm Bichon. We will definitely give it another go. Thanks Dana!

I am particularly drawn to overnight care and am a little more cost effective and also have childcare experience which means I have experience with safety, complex problem solving and teaching. Also, my enjoyment of walking in different surroundings means the dogs might get a little extra strolling around.

About

Are you tired of having your arm pulled out of its socket because of an undisciplined dog? It begs the question, "Who's walking who?" If you reside within 10 miles of the Clear Lake area (Southeast Houston), I can help. If you reside further than 10 miles, I must add a $10 travel fee. I have extensive experience with dogs due to my time as a dog trainer in the military. We took "green" dogs from not knowing even how to sit or heel to fully certified detector dogs that anyone would be proud of. My training model is to train you on how to train your dog. All instruction will be focused on teaching you how to train. The intent is to train you and your dog in your environment. Call for an appointment and leave a message or send an email with your name, number and a brief message regarding age, and breed of your dog. I'll call you back as soon as I can to schedule a time. Initial consultation is free where we will meet for 30 minutes to discuss your unique situation and to formulate a plan. See you soon!

About

Our day care and boarding clients will never be put in a kennel, unless specifically requested by the owner or if a timeout is needed. Your family member will also be under constant supervision. For boarding clients, a member of our staff will stay the evening at our facility with your furry family member. This service sets us apart from many boarding facilities where the pets are left alone overnight in a kennel.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

  • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
  • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
  • Wash and dry: $60
  • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
