Tara C. says, "Both of my dogs loved both ladies and were extremely responsive to their lessons. The main reason I originally sought out help was because one of my dogs, Charlie, was resource guarding. We discerned that it was fear based (she’s partially blind and disabled). We put together a plan to negate any unnecessary aggression she was showing in regard to the resource guarding, and were also given awesome and smart solutions (that never would have occurred to me!) and she has shown incredible improvement! I’m so happy with our results. Not only did they work with Charlie on those issues, but they helped us work with our other dog, Bennie, as well. In just a few visits, they both learned: park it, down/down stay, leave it, drop it, “get back”, come, and my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE, wait at the door. Among other tips and tricks. They both no longer dart or charge out the front door. And they learned that so quickly! I cannot recommend TDS Canine Solutions highly enough. They were super pleasant, friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and funny to boot. They incorporated and taught my 8-year-old daughter amazingly as well. It really was a training course for the whole family. They tailored everything to our needs, lifestyle, dog (dis)abilities and personality types. You won’t be disappointed."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

With many different ways or techniques to train your dog nowadays, I am beyond grateful I found Pamela to train my English Bulldog. Pamela's approach to dog training is one of the only few in Dallas that does not use treats to train. With this approach, your dog not only listens to you better, but longterm wise they won't keep looking at your hand or for the nearest bag of dog treats nearby to determine if they should listen to you. This has taught my dog to fully understand my commands better and build a better relationship and bonding experience between her and me based on praise training. My dog now listens to me without having to have any treats on hand or nearby.

I contacted Perfect Pact to help me with a special request since I do not own any dogs. I spend time at an animal shelter and noticed if the dogs were better trained it would help their adoption chances. Leash training is the most common request. Perfect Pact met me at the shelter and we worked with a few dogs. They immediately pointed out some techniques and by the end of the session I could see the results. Their training lead to adoptions because I could show the new owners how the dogs respond to training.

Andie established her authority position with our puppy, Bismarck (started training at 12 weeks), immediately gaining his interest and attention. Then she passed that same ability on to us. We were as much in need of training as the dog. After 6 weeks with Andie, our dog responds to basic commands, is comfortable in public settings, and socializes easily with other dogs and people. She laid the groundwork for the training we continue to do with our dog. She's excellent!

Andie was great with my dog. More importantly she listened to my concerns and customized my training. The education on understanding how my dog learns is invaluable. I would recommend booking with her for training. Great communication, timely, and never rushed.

Pamela is a truly wonderful dog trainer. We just completed our fourth session last week and, in just two weeks, my dog is already calmer and more well-behaved. She really gives you the confidence you need to make the training successful. Perhaps the best gift, though, is that in training with Pamela, I feel much closer to my dog. Both him and me couldn't recommend her more!

They communicated great with us. They taught us well and gave us the tools to train our pomsky puppy and 2 other adult dogs. We would've not been able to train him especially since our puppy is not the easiest to handle. They did great helping to train our 3 dogs. I can see the difference before and now.

Andie has worked her magic on my Rescue dog Dale! He’s so much more confident and less anxious since he’s had guidance. As a dog that was chained up his entire life until he got to me, he came with absolutely no training, house manners, and destructive tenancies. He’s come a very long way since starting training and I couldn’t be happier! I highly recommend anyone who needs a dog trainer to try out Andie as is worth every penny!

Our pup is only 6 was old and didn’t have interaction with her mother & limited exposure to litter mates for only the first 3 weeks: Lauren brought her 9mo old pup to interact as well as talk about the training and philosophy, etc. It was really great to see our Storm learning to be a dog, and good behavior as a dog right away. My husband and I were sold and went for the full training package :)

Brian is friendly, professional, and patient. His many years of experience is evident. My dog looks like a brand new dog after just two lessons. I look forward to the results after our 6 sessions are complete. The training is well worth the cost! Thanks Brian!

If your dog has aggressive behavior, stay away from this trainer. My dog had never bit anyone but after the trainings with Pamela he bit my girlfriend, and of course Pamela did not even say sorry. She does not believe in treats; other trainers will tell you how inhumane this method is. I had a terrible experience with Pamela but fortunately Thumbtack showed very good support and we didn't feel we have been left alone. This is the first time in my whole life that I'm writing a 1-star review of ANYTHING.

Butch is amazing. My dog had severe fear angression and has a bite history. After being with Butch for several weeks, my dog is no longer aggressive and loves meeting new people. Not only did Butch work with my dog pertaining to his aggression, he also taught him skills and I'll continue to see Butch in the future for further training. If you dog needs help with aggression or obedience, K9 Kountry is the place to go! Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

We hired Lauren over a year ago. From the information online we thought we were getting a great deal for the price. We didn't like that Lauren said one of our dogs was smarter than the other because of her breed. Both our dogs are extremely intelligent and it seemed as though she didn't think that. also didn't appreciate that she was over 30 minutes late. We also had to pay extra for a prong collar that did nothing for our dogs training wise at all. Most of the time we spent was listening to Lauren tell about herself and her experiences, we felt it should have been more focused on actual training our dogs. We did not hire her after the initial session.

Wonderful. Helpful. And she really knows dogs. I would recommend her to anyone. She has a very clear set of training methods, and she explains why and how she does it that way.

i didn't learn anything i didn't already know. It seemed like the bulk of her training methodology consisted of simply "good girl" and "bad dog" type of reinforcement. Of course i am oversimplifying. And the trainer was very nice as a person. At the end, I just didn't find anything worth paying a professional for.

Pamela is absolutely wonderful. I can not recommend her more highly. She really pays attention to our dog's (Australian Shepard/Great Pyrenees) strengths and weaknesses and tailors training to him individually. She has taught us so much as owners/handlers and we feel like we are now able to effectively communicate with our dog. We love that all training is done with positive reinforcement instead of treats... it creates a much stronger relationship with our sweet pup. His bad habits (mouthing, counter surfing, chewing things that did not belong to him) were gone almost immediately after starting to train and now he is just soaking up more and more advanced training that makes walking, meals, and playtime so much more fun. We love Pamela!
